For the Jazz bags - what are your favorite one-two horn teams?

I am listening to Jackie McLean's "Hipgnosis" with Grachan Moncur III right now, and predictably I love it. Some obvious ones right off the bat:

Diz and Bird
Miles and Trane
Ornette and Don (Cherry)
Ornette and Don (Redman)

Do tenor tag-teams count?

I figure anytime you got two guys breathing through something to make sounds counts. If you know a good team on kazoo and slide whistle, post it.

Oilyrags, Friday, 28 September 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

Leroy Jones + Craig Klein or Lucien Barbarin

Jordan, Friday, 28 September 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

BORBETOMAGUS guyz
check the Sauter/Dietrich "Bells Together" LP

Drew Daniel, Friday, 28 September 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

Borbetomagus tops my list for sure. Agree about Moncur/McLean, Miles/Coltrane. Also: Hank Mobley/Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown/Sonny Rollins, Sonny Rollins/Don Cherry (Our Man In Jazz fucking rules)...

Bill Dixon/Jimmy Lyons on Cecil Taylor's Conquistador.

Sara Sara Sara, Friday, 28 September 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

I keep thinking of records I love with two guys playing great together and then realize there's a third wind in the mix.

Oilyrags, Friday, 28 September 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

Rahsaan Roland Kirk!

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 28 September 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Oh really now.

Oilyrags, Friday, 28 September 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

ha

Jordan, Friday, 28 September 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Trumpt/trombone is the best, but I can't think of any more well-known teams!

Jordan, Friday, 28 September 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

Marshall Allen/John Gilmore

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 28 September 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

Fred and Maceo

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 28 September 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

The star trombone players seem to have this thing about being the only horn or teaming with another bone player.

Jordan, Friday, 28 September 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I love Brian Lynch/Conrad Herwig.

Jordan, Friday, 28 September 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

Art Farmer and Benny Golson

Stormy Davis, Friday, 28 September 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

If this was a poll thread I'd probably vote Vandermark/Bishop with Miles/Trane at #2, but I gotta mention A. Braxton/G. Lewis as well.

But for 1-2-3 horn teams, I'll fite to the death for Bunk Gardner/Ian Underwood/Motorhead Sherwood.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 28 September 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

There's a lotta one-album-only matchups that I could mention.

For extended partnerships, I'll say Coltrane/Sanders and Davis/Shorter.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 28 September 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

Gerry Mulligan/Art Farmer

Hurting 2, Friday, 28 September 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

Anthony Braxton & Sam Rivers sound pretty goddamn good together on "Conference of the Birds"

Sparkle Motion, Sunday, 30 September 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

Konitz/Marsh

Øystein, Sunday, 30 September 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

To be honest, they're not really my favorite, but I figured they ought to be mentioned in this thread. I, for one, will at least be using this thread to look up the musicians I'm unfamiliar with or haven't heard play together.
A pair I've been digging a lot recently is Brown & Rollins on "Plus 4."

Øystein, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

Are there any trumpeters/trombonists who perform as the only horn in a band? Don't think I've never heard of such an animal.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

Sure there are.

Hurting 2, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

Roy Campbell (trumpet) is the only horn in the Marc Ribot Spiritual Unity group, for example

Hurting 2, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

Art Farmer did quartet stuff with guitar/bass/drums.

Hurting 2, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

I could probably think of more given time.

Hurting 2, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

I think there's at least one Oscar Peterson Trio + Clark Terry record with no other horns.

Hurting 2, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

George Lewis has at least one solo bone record.
The trombone discussion reminds me of a fine pairing: Frank Rosolino with Harold Land on _Free For All_

Though I've unfortunately only heard one album of them, I do want to mention Prince Lasha & Sonny Simmons, who were brilliant together on _Firebirds_.

Øystein, Sunday, 30 September 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

If we can name three-horn teams, then Maupin/Priestley/Henderson in Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band (and later on Henderson's solo albums) was a killer.

Miles/Sam Rivers on Live in Tokyo

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 30 September 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

Live in Tokyo sounds like they're trading jabs onstage.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 30 September 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh, Art Farmer! How could I forget? I once owned (still own?) a couple of his recs.
