Inspired by Kanye West's "Stronger." Led Zeppelin is disqualified because they never released singles. "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "November Rain" are shorter than "The Prophet's Song" and "Coma," respectively.

Def Leppard's "Rocket" (single #7) just squeaks over album track "Gods Of War" by three seconds (according to wikipedia) on Hysteria.
― da croupier, Saturday, 29 September 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)
Wasn't the single for "Rocket" edited, though? I don't think the video version was, but the radio version definitely was.

"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," Iron Butterfly "Get Ready," Rare Earth
Both hits as singles, but the album versions were an entire album side long.
And Led Zeppelin DID release singles. At least in the US. Even though they were known as an album band, they did have the occasional Top 40 hit on occasion. Maybe Zep didn't release singles in the UK???
― Rev. Hoodoo, Saturday, 29 September 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)
Zep did have singles, but "Stairway" wasn't one of them.
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 29 September 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)
I get all confused as to what album it was originally on (being that the UK and US versions were different), but whichever Smiths album first featured "How Soon Is Now?"
― Alex in NYC, Saturday, 29 September 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)
That was Meat is Murder.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 29 September 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)
How Soon Is Now wasn't on any of the original issues of their albums, it was an extra track on the US version.
― Colonel Poo, Saturday, 29 September 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)
I actually hate that song for some reason. Heard it too much maybe.
― Colonel Poo, Saturday, 29 September 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)
"won't get fooled again" is the longest song on who's next, but the single version is about 4 1/2 minutes shorter than the album version. so maybe that doesn't count.
― Lawrence the Looter, Saturday, 29 September 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)
blue line swinger by yo la tengo is the longest track off electropura, but was released as a single in a severely edited version, so probably doesn't count so much
― electricsound, Saturday, 29 September 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)
UK people, how long was the version of "Blue Room" that actually got played? cuz nobody was spinning the 40-minute unedited one, right?
― bernard snowy, Sunday, 30 September 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)
Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True, and what's interesting is that "Watching the Detectives" is only 3:42, yet the longest song on the album by about 15 seconds...
― stephen, Sunday, 30 September 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)
If Common People were ten seconds longer.......

― kornrulez6969, Sunday, 30 September 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)
Album version of Blue Room is an edit of earlier single, doesn't count here. (album edit also about 13 minutes longer than 7" edit)

"Fake Plastic Trees" and "There There" too
― abanana, Sunday, 30 September 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)
If tracks that were edited for single release counts, you may also add "Welcome To The Pleasure Dome" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
― Geir Hongro, Sunday, 30 September 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, lotsa edited-for-single-release tracks would qualify.
"I Feel Love" (5:55) outlasts everything else on I Remember Yesterday. (And was also released in an extended 12" version, fwiw.)

i thought that song was only on the us version of the album (in a similar manner to "how soon is now"/meat is murder)?
― Lawrence the Looter, Sunday, 30 September 2007 07:42 (eighteen years ago)
Well, "Hey Jude" would've been the longest track - it was their third-longest track ever, in fact - but it never appeared on a proper (non-compilation" album.

i wouldn't know, i'm not a die-hard fan or anything, and i do have the US version of the album so that's entirely possible that it's not on the UK version

Champagne Supernova wasn't a single in the UK.
― ailsa, Monday, 1 October 2007 09:05 (eighteen years ago)
Ride, Going Blank Again - I think 'Leave Them All Behind' was the longest track, no?
'I Am The Resurrection' is a bit of a cheat as a single, on the part of Silvertone.
― Matthew H, Monday, 1 October 2007 09:23 (eighteen years ago)
Public Enemy "Black Steel in the Hour Of Chaos" from Nation of Millions. I don't think it was really even editted that much for the single. And, the second longest song was also a single: "Don't Believe The Hype."
