bbc radio - C or D

all the daytime music shows on r1 and r2 are quite awful (either cos the djs are terrible and lack personality or say *nothing*, or the music is awful, or both the djs and music are awful). but the rest has its good points. i think i prefer talk radio to music radio these days anyway.

buggers broadcasting communism. amirite?

little lord fauntleroy, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

Radio 3 wouldn't be done by any other company. The rest I can do without, tho I listen to a fair bit of sport on 5 Live.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

i like to listen to radio 4 in the morning for the news/current affairs, it's much more in depth than tv news channels.

some of the bbc's dance music coverage is ok, apart from the cheesy stuff. they need to get rid of tong and judge jules the same way they got rid of DLT and all those old farts in the 90s.

I felt kindof bad when I realized recently I'd forgotten all about Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone on BBC6. I ought to listen to that again. Not always good, but usually quite educational from what I recall.

- radio 3 is often great

- 'front row' on radio 4 (with mark lawson)

- radio 1 occasionally throws up a decent essential mix

- and i'm addicted to the mark kermode podcast on R5. worth it for the yearly 'pirates of the c' rant alone

Best show: Late Junction on Radio 3.

From Wiki: "Its eclectic selection of music caters to many tastes. It is not uncommon to hear medieval ballads juxtaposed with 21st century electronica, or jazz followed by international folk music followed by an ambient track. The show has a laid-back mood overall, and it generally draws to a close with quiet and soporific music."

Also: BBC Radio Player lifesaving classic.

Mark Lawson has gotta die. Seriously.

Raw Patrick, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 07:58 (eighteen years ago)

Really? Why?

I can imagine Mark Kermode might divide people - opiniated old s*d that he is. But his scathing dissection of Tarantino's career last week was classic and very OTM if you ask me.

sam500, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 08:18 (eighteen years ago)

Kermode never afraid to take on the Sacred Cows eh?

Scathing about Tarantino = rong

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 08:22 (eighteen years ago)

Mostly Classic - but the axing of Mixing It (and the manner of it's axing) srsly DUD.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 08:37 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Late Junction is no way a replacement for Mixing It. I miss those guys.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 08:40 (eighteen years ago)

I heard the Annie Nightingale/Mac teamup.

Nice to hear her again, but her voice sounds umm, different?

Oh, and she turned down the opportunity to play "Fish Heads" which was a shame, the kids were all "aw"

Mark G, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 08:52 (eighteen years ago)

'fish heads' is classic request show fodder, along with 'is that all there is?' and 'it's a fine day'. perhaps i'm showing my age.

have been listening to peel tribute show but am hearing streaming artefacts more than usual despite realplayer telling me it's running at 64kbps, twice the usual bitrate.

koogs, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 09:42 (eighteen years ago)

i'd listen to radio 1 a lot more if the djs had a little less "personality"

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

then again that is probably the easiest thing to say about radio ever

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Is there a good hip-hop show anywhere someone could recommend? I really don't like Semtex (silly voice, no fucking quality control-every other day nah right has him have a clip HANGING OUT WITH ASHER ROTH or whatever etc.), and while Westwood has his charms, I'd really like to listen to something once a week that wasn't hosted by an annoying white boy with a silly voice. Too much to ask? I guess it doesn't have to be on the BBC but the iplayer just makes everything incredibly easy.

Also, the comedy on BBC4/7, anyone got any tips on where to start? I only ever get as far as the panel shows like Just A Minute/The News Quiz etc. and never really know where to start with everything else...

five years pass...

been catching up with the last 2 In Our Time eps on Venus + The Poor Laws, A+ as usual. I just noticed on i-player "Radio" has been changed to an apparently more contemporary "Sounds" because you are now entering BBC funk city, oldie. And don't accidentally get yr square mind blown by that hip young firebrand Scott Mills by clicking on R1 erroneously!

calzino, Thursday, 27 December 2018 10:19 (seven years ago)

Sounds is a phone app, all other online audio content is being rebranded to fit it. As a long time user of the old radio app, so far the main difference seems to be that I now cannot find anything I want.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 27 December 2018 10:36 (seven years ago)

yeah it seemed to take me lots of extra clicks than usual to get where I wanted.

calzino, Thursday, 27 December 2018 10:38 (seven years ago)

.. not using the app, but just pc access of i-player I mean.

calzino, Thursday, 27 December 2018 10:41 (seven years ago)

(ooh) gary davis was on radio 2 this afternoon using the same jingles as he did when he was on radio one. it's like the 90s never happened.
