Man-Erg, because of the beautiful superimposition of the two main themes at the tail of the end of the song.

FWIW, I've always thought "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" to be overrated. Nice sections, but it doesn't flow very well as a suite, IMO.

I really like "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" a lot actually. I agree that some sections of it are very disjoint, but I still enjoy all of the parts, and the second half of it has several of my favorite moments on the album. The last section which starts like 4 minutes from the end is especially wonderful. HOWEVER, I have a major issue with it and that is: it just kind of dies out at the end right after building up in intensity for several minutes. It sets itself up for a final bombastic chord which never happens (which is really strange for a prog-rock album).

I voted for "Man-Erg" which is both the best-constructed piece of the 3 on here, and has the most memorable lyrics as well.

I would like to apologise to every visitor to this site who doesn't recognise Van der Graaf Generator as the greatest band in the history of the universe. Clearly. what makes us valuable as human beings is our genetic diversity, and the ensuing difference in aesthetic judgement that that entails. That said, I am happy to assume that dismissing VdGG may make you the King of Gaydom, and your inability to understand Peter Hammill's place at the centre of the universe implies that you are the stupidest cockbungler in the history of God's earth.

Best wishes

one year passes...

Lemmings is really good btw

also the fact that that final chord never comes and the song spins off into dischordant oblivion is possibly one of the most fitting and devastatingly beautiful ends to an album, like, ever
