yeah it's a great great single. one song does not even close to an album make.

nah, but when an album has tracks like "Reservoir Dogs" and "Money, Cash, Hoes", it's not just a great single. I could usually do without "If I Should Die", though.

yeah, I mean, I like Vol. 3, it will probably always be top three for me, but never number one.

Unplugged is cool, but I wouldn't really want to rate it among Jay's whole catalog, I'm glad this poll is just his studio albums. If anything, Unplugged is closer to my favorite Roots album than favorite Jay-Z album.

Unplugged = 1/2 the better half of the tunes from one of his best albums + 1/2 greatest hits album that stops right before he started releasing wack singles like "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" & "Change Clothes" = 1 WINNAR

And the reason it isn't a Roots album at all is because the rapper on it has an actual personality. All actual Roots albums are dragged down by that drone Black Thought.

Eh, I wouldn't go that far although the knee-jerk in me would like to, but Black Thought in particular strikes me as the most, ahem, competent rapper I've ever heard.

Vol 3, but I really like every album up to and including The Blueprint 2 (underrated). Never really got with The Black Album, a few tracks aside.

i love black thought. he straddles the commercial/underground thing for me way better than mos def or talib...i fucking love illadelph halflife and most of things fall apart...i heard a song of game theory on the radio the other day that was awesome, he was spitting some more drug dealer type shit....

whatever happened to dice raw? also i think the first time i heard beanie sigel was on the roots, is he a part of their crew kinda?

also, as far as conscious rap sucks, is anyone here sure that jay ever made a record as good as the first two brand nubian albums? cuz i'm not....

Beanie isn't really a part of the extended Roots/Okayplayer family per se, I think they just linked up with him before he was signed since they're all from Philly, like Eve being on the same album before she blew up. I love all the Roots/State Property crossover stuff (Peedi on Game Theory, that Freeway single produced by ?uestlove and Scott Storch), I wish they'd do a whole project together.

Vol. 3 was too high, but it's stil a small triumph over the tendency to place Reasonable Doubt/Blueprint/Black Album above all other Jay albums. Is there some rock critic (or rockist?) code that distrusts albums with numbers and colons in the title?
