reasonable doubt is the classic, still have fond memories of the blueprint, first jay z album i actually bought. hmmmm...

max r, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 10:18 (seventeen years ago)

vol 1 ftw

but couldn't this have waited another few weeks, so that both Kingdom Come AND American Gangster could get big fat zeroes?

^^ more acceptable answer than "The Grey Album"

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

this is a good excuse to play those first four again

da croupier, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, just listening to vol 2 again and I can't get over the beat on "Can I Get A ..."

Euler, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, just listening to vol 2 again and I can't get over the beat on "Can I Get A ..."

-- Euler, Wednesday, 3 October 2007

probs still my fave single by him, good call.

max r, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

yeah it's a great great single. one song does not even close to an album make.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

nah, but when an album has tracks like "Reservoir Dogs" and "Money, Cash, Hoes", it's not just a great single. I could usually do without "If I Should Die", though.

Euler, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

three good songs does not a great album make either

gabbneb, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

there should be, like, no bad songs, you know. maybe one or two, depending on how long it is.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

it also has 'a week ago' and 'nigga what nigga who' and plenty of other solid tracks. ban gabbneb

deej, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

i like pretty much every song on Vol 2

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

vol 3 now, reasonable doubt 3 years ago, unplugged 3 years before that

gman, Thursday, 4 October 2007 05:03 (seventeen years ago)

Since Unplugged isn't available, I'm going w/ Reasonable Doubt. The V.3 fanboys are insane.

The Reverend, Thursday, 4 October 2007 05:33 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, I mean, I like Vol. 3, it will probably always be top three for me, but never number one.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 4 October 2007 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

i can't honestly say unplugged is in the top 5
really liked the bonus track on that tho

deej, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

Unplugged is cool, but I wouldn't really want to rate it among Jay's whole catalog, I'm glad this poll is just his studio albums. If anything, Unplugged is closer to my favorite Roots album than favorite Jay-Z album.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

Unplugged = 1/2 the better half of the tunes from one of his best albums + 1/2 greatest hits album that stops right before he started releasing wack singles like "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" & "Change Clothes" = 1 WINNAR

The Reverend, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

And the reason it isn't a Roots album at all is because the rapper on it has an actual personality. All actual Roots albums are dragged down by that drone Black Thought.

The Reverend, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:46 (seventeen years ago)

haha, true. most "conscious" rappers are a bore.

max r, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

Eh, I wouldn't go that far although the knee-jerk in me would like to, but Black Thought in particular strikes me as the most, ahem, competent rapper I've ever heard.

The Reverend, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

makes me want to listen to 2 live crew.

max r, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

ILX System, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Vol 3, but I really like every album up to and including The Blueprint 2 (underrated). Never really got with The Black Album, a few tracks aside.

Tim F, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

i love black thought. he straddles the commercial/underground thing for me way better than mos def or talib...i fucking love illadelph halflife and most of things fall apart...i heard a song of game theory on the radio the other day that was awesome, he was spitting some more drug dealer type shit....

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

whatever happened to dice raw? also i think the first time i heard beanie sigel was on the roots, is he a part of their crew kinda?

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

also, as far as conscious rap sucks, is anyone here sure that jay ever made a record as good as the first two brand nubian albums? cuz i'm not....

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

I'm pretty sure Dice Raw is on the most recent Roots album.

The Reverend, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:39 (seventeen years ago)

cool i'll have to check that i always liked that dude

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

;_;

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

Beanie isn't really a part of the extended Roots/Okayplayer family per se, I think they just linked up with him before he was signed since they're all from Philly, like Eve being on the same album before she blew up. I love all the Roots/State Property crossover stuff (Peedi on Game Theory, that Freeway single produced by ?uestlove and Scott Storch), I wish they'd do a whole project together.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 5 October 2007 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

the dice raw joint on game theory sounds like fatboy slim. dope albnum tho.

Vol. 3 was too high, but it's stil a small triumph over the tendency to place Reasonable Doubt/Blueprint/Black Album above all other Jay albums. Is there some rock critic (or rockist?) code that distrusts albums with numbers and colons in the title?

Alex in Baltimore, Saturday, 6 October 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

Alright, can anyone explain what's so great about Vol. 3?

Alright, can anyone explain what's so great about Vol. 3?

Yo.. career crook, nobody rap Brooklyn like me
Jigga-Man, Volume 3, I'm back lookin like me
Stop the presses, baby girls, drop your dresses
B-K lick a shot for Big Pop' in heaven
Ever since I came through, niggaz got the impression
everything I drop, out of the question, stop the guessin
it's hot, flows provin I pack cause my dough's movin
My whole crew up in this muh'fucker
We spray corners, stand there like you got a cape on ya, fine
You'll be wearing a black suit a long time
I put your crew in hard bottoms
The priest is like, "God's got him
He never did nuttin to nobody but them boys shot him"
Brandish iron, outlandish buyin
Bentley Coupes, not braggin just simply the truth
We all from the ghetto, only difference, we go back
Back up in D&D on this Primo track, listen

Chorus: Jay-Z {scratching by DJ Premier}

I'm so gangsta prissy chicks don't wanna fuck with me
"Iceberg, Slim baby ride rims"
I'm so gutter, ghetto girls fall in love with me
"You know him well.." "..by the name of Jigga"
I'm so gangsta prissy chicks don't wanna fuck with me
"You can love me or hate me.." "..Jay-Z"
I'm so gutter, ghetto girls fall in love with me
"Roc-a-Fella lock the whole block down"

[Jay-Z]
Wednesday's I'm up in Shine, Cheetah's Monday night
I'm fuckin with the model chicks Friday night at Life
So I'm cruisin in the car with this boozy broad
She said, "Jigga-Man you rich, take the doo-rag off"
Hit a U-turn; ma I'm droppin you back off
Front of the club, "Jigga why you do that for?"
Thug nigga til the end, tell a friend bitch
Won't change for no paper plus I been rich
Eighty-eight been hustlin, linen been crushin em
Women been fuckin them HUH?
You see I live for the love of the street
Rap to the ruggedest beats
Hall closet cluttered with heat
I spit that murder-murder-murder
that Brook-Brook-a-Brooklyn shit
Furthermore ma..
We tote guns to the Grammy's, pop bottles on the White House lawn
Guess I'm just the same old Shawn

Chorus

[Jay-Z]
I'm from the M-to-the-A-baby-R-C-Y
So it's hard for me to let the larceny die
Niggaz see me in the streets with no bodyguards
just two big guns that'll body your squad
Could niggaz be scheamin on me? Probably are
Think Jigga's a joke nigga? Hardy har
I spit Brook-Brook-Brooklyn every time I bust
Radio's gotta play me though I cuss too much
Magazine said I'm shallow, I never learned to swim
Still they put me on they cover cause I earn for them
Soon as I sell too much, watch them turn on him
cause that seem to be the shit that'll earn for them
I spit that murder-murder-murderous everytime a verbalist
iller than Verbal Kint is or O-Dog in "Menace"
I'm ill, start to finish, I rip apart contenders
I'm hot..

Chorus

[Jay-Z]
I'm so gangsta prissy chicks don't wanna fuck with me, uhh
I'm so gutter, ghetto girls ..
Heheh, (uhh, uhh, uh-huh-uh-uhh), yeah
Uhh, yeah, funk, yeah, with me, yeah, beyotch, yeah

I've completely changed course on this one....expect to get 'herb' comments, and no real surprises, but....

The Blueprint
Reasonable Doubt
Vol 3 (used to dislike this one, now I outright love it)
Vol 2 (went from liking to loving this one)
Vol 1 (Sunshine and KNow what Boys Like put a minor taint on this that the otherwise fantastic album doesn't overcome)
The Black Album
American Gangster
Dynasty (this IS good)
Blueprint 2

Blueprint 3
