Amazing Grace - C or D?

The song so nice, they had to play it eighteenhundredwice (according to AMG, who list some 1813 recordings). However, this song brings me no pleasure at all. It stands out a little from most of the Presbyterian hymnbook, but it's not like that's any great feat. Something about the combination of the melody and the 3/4 actually makes me feel a little dizzy, a little seasick almost.

I say DUD, but does anybody else? And if so, how come there's 2000 dang versions of the thing and it gets tromped out every time there's a funeral?

I have this fucking wicked video of this drunked up dude we met down the pub who claimed he once sang in the London Philharmonic and who proceeded to give us what was probably the worst rendition of any song I've ever heard. Later he threatened us by making us swear that his great grandmother was an Arabian princess. I'll upload it one day.
