Davey D, Friday, 5 October 2007 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

went with rough mix as i always find something to enjoy when i put it on.

drone/a/sore, Friday, 5 October 2007 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

white city, which is also better than half the albums the who made

akm, Friday, 5 October 2007 01:53 (seventeen years ago)

OK I hope the results of this poll are helpful, I'd love to hear some good solo Townshend stuff but know nothing beyond, like, "Let My Love Open The Door."

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 5 October 2007 02:08 (seventeen years ago)

empty glass, are you kidding!

roxymuzak, Friday, 5 October 2007 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

xpost let my love open the door is FABULOUS

roxymuzak, Friday, 5 October 2007 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

I got friends who'll defend All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes to the death.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 5 October 2007 02:15 (seventeen years ago)

No fair putting Scoops - have to think Empty Glass will sleep this one. I voted for it.

Mark Rich@rdson, Friday, 5 October 2007 02:39 (seventeen years ago)

oh I love that song, I'm just saying it's all I know.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 5 October 2007 02:39 (seventeen years ago)

Er, "sweep," rather.

Mark Rich@rdson, Friday, 5 October 2007 02:46 (seventeen years ago)

First two Scoops are really great, 2/3 of Empty Glass is great, 1/2 of White City and Chinese Eyes are great.

Mark Rich@rdson, Friday, 5 October 2007 02:48 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm...if pressed, I think I'll take Another Scoop of ice cream. But that's only because I'm embarassed to say I haven't played Who Came First in ten years. Strange really, as it was a huge favourite of his for me at the time. Maybe I really should try to play it again.

Bimble, Friday, 5 October 2007 03:27 (seventeen years ago)

who came first is awesome! pure and easy cuts the who's version, furthermore

outdoor_miner, Friday, 5 October 2007 03:30 (seventeen years ago)

Thread has me downloading some Pete:

"Hiding Out"
"Face Dances Pt. 2"
"Let My Love Open the Door"
"The Sea Refuses No River"
"Somebody Saved Me"
"And I Moved"
"Rough Boys"
"A Little is Enough"
"Face the Face"
"Slit Skirts"

Mark Rich@rdson, Friday, 5 October 2007 03:31 (seventeen years ago)

I'd like to see White City get a good showing in this poll as well.

I'm playing Who Came First, now.

Bimble, Friday, 5 October 2007 03:34 (seventeen years ago)

"Empty Glass".

Geir Hongro, Friday, 5 October 2007 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

i'm going with empty glass too, but jeez, why so little response? no love for pete on ilm?

Lawrence the Looter, Sunday, 7 October 2007 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

rough mix is v good, but not really "solo"

gershy, Sunday, 7 October 2007 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a "Scoop" fan, what can I say?

Mark G, Sunday, 7 October 2007 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

i always found it kind of amazing not just how prolific townshend was (which is a little odd, considering how relatively meager the who's official studio output was), but how adept he was as an engineer/producer/arranger on his demos. he developed a most distinctive production style, such that calling his recordings "demos" is almost an insult.

Lawrence the Looter, Sunday, 7 October 2007 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

he's really been lazy for 20 years, tho. You'd think he'd be more like, say Young or Springsteen: whether or not you dig what they've done, they're still trying.

Veronica Moser, Monday, 8 October 2007 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, he's been writing/recording constantly over the last 20 years. Unlike Young, doesn't see the point in putting out half of a good record (always paired with half of a horrible record) every year.

Sara Sara Sara, Monday, 8 October 2007 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

Rough Mix by a hair over Empty Glass.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 8 October 2007 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

y'know, SSS, you have a good point. I forgot that, at a press conference I went to six years ago, he said that he records a lot, but "maybe I don't want you to hear it."

still though, it seems that he should be able to put out something of worth, where he takes stock of what's going on in the world and in his life (might want to avoid addressing that whole thing four years ago) more than once every ten years. That last Who record was rilly rilly bad, but at least then he has the excuse of having to write stuff that Daltrey finds suitable.

Veronica Moser, Monday, 8 October 2007 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

I thought Endless Wire nestled perfectly in their discography somewheres between By Numbers and Who Are You. In fact, in terms of exploring the themes of the relationship(s) between the audience and the music, it was far more successful than Who Are You. And it ain't all down to Daltrey, considering Pete sings at least 1/3rd of what's on Endless Wire.

Sara Sara Sara, Monday, 8 October 2007 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

i think it's better than both of those records, actually.

akm, Monday, 8 October 2007 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a "Scoop" fan, what can I say?

Yeah, I am too see, and the only reason I voted for Another Scoop is I figured since it has like twice as many songs...you catch my drift? *cheeky grin* Though I haven't bothered to count exactly how many of my fave songs are on either of them. I hope you see my statistical logic, though.

Scoop 3 on the other hand was a rather huge disappointment.

I also feel like I should remember more about the Lifehouse Chronicles discs, but for some reason I really don't, despite playing the first couple ones in the car many times completely sober. I guess I was just over my main Pete fixation by then or something.

Bimble, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

Also, for what may not be the last time on this board, I would like to profess what has proven to be my permanent, undying love for "Endless Wire", and thank Sara Sara Sara for mentioning it. I know I will remain in the minority on that possibly forever, but I am still convinced that album is one of the top two best things to come out in the last 5 years (Kate Bush's Aerial being the other). I know we've said this before but Daltrey alone has never been better, though Pete will always be my fave. End of sermon.

Bimble, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 03:06 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

wow...kinda surprised psychoderelict got a vote. not surprised at all that the iron man didn't get any votes.

Lawrence the Looter, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm...dunno what happened there...did my vote for Another Scoop not get counted or did I forget to vote? Oh well...I think it's kinda cool (but a bit weird) to see Rough Mix as high as in second place.

Bimble, Thursday, 11 October 2007 05:47 (seventeen years ago)

Hard to believe that's the same guy who destroyed the Monterey and Woodstock stages and scared the living shit out of the hippies.

You're a notch, I'm a legend (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 14:18 (thirteen years ago)

one month passes...

"Rough Boys" is feeling all-time great today - with a classic video as well. "Let My Love Open The Door" ain't far behind, either.
