What music guest would you put on Saturday Night Live if you could pick only one?

Play Hal Willner for a day. You're in charge of picking next week's musical guest on SNL. Who would you put on? They get two songs on what's still one of the broadest platforms available to musicians in the US. So this would be a chance to proselytize.

I can't find the SNL Miles Davis clip. Not the man at his best, once you consider he was actually having a stroke during the performance, it was a small miracle.

I recall digging Rick James on SNL (in the "Superfreak" days) but can't find the clip...

hahahhah yes I remember that! Spade does Dave Pirner in this one and then
there was a similar sketch (same season possibly?) here he did Cobain.

Makes sense, considering Vandermark is pretty much the free jazz equivalent of the Blues Brothers.

My choice: Bill Dixon/Cecil Taylor duo.

that Radiohead performance is the only time they've ever impressed me. Wilner must have dug putting together the Mingus horn arrangement.

Let me throw in a little bit of controversy: I noticed the distinct sound of a bass guitar in that B 52s clip. It's very clear at the end. And it's not organ. They had to have a guy from the snl band playing from off stage! !!!!
