Please, someone explain this to me. Churning out reviews of shite like Adema and 1208 for the university paper has made me wonder that, if I put some random words in capitals, all the cool kids would like me. Even Mark "Satan's Emmissary On Earth" Beaumont has started doing it now. Whatsupwitdat?

Judd Nelson, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's this THING.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

BECAUSE they fear you MIGHT not get THE message.

nathalie, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

= proof of nong-existence of influence DO YOU SEE!! (eg they haf nevah read anything by starry sarah QED)

mark s, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

People who don't are DULL. (Yes, all of you)

Sarah, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Cause THERE'S trouble in controlling THE volume. And the need TO BE heard/READ.

Andy K, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(Why do I take an insult on capitals PERSONALLY??? Grrr if you haf to ask you do not see the POINT, grandad! University paper YEAH RITE I bet you write for Saga Magazine ARF.

Sarah, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Comes from welsh and nordic rhyme schemes used to transmit large amounts of information memorably in oral cultcha.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

point being th'words aren't random.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the ppl judd is talking abt it may be random tho eg when you hit cap lock because it's next to a and type a bunch in caps w/o NOTICING

mark s, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Look -- if you use the caps to NO POINT, then RILLY, what type of shit poor EXCUSE for JOURNALISM are you trying to PAWN OFF on an unsuspecting public? D'ya take them for SUCKERS or SOMETHING?

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got a headache from just reading this thread...

No, but seriously, it pisses me off. What the journalist is saying is "I'm really excited/ really angry about the point I'm making, but I'm too shite at actually writing to show you such, so I'll just make like the anti-cummings, and hope everything will be alright".

Grr.

Judd Nelson, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you could also use bold or italics. I guess CAPS are the new bold.

g, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or even an occasional underline, y'know? Mix it up a bit, that's all I'm asking.

Judd Nelson, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Underlines are never acceptable. Trust me on this.

Sean, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Caps Lock Tourrettes.

Nick Southall, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

to HURT your EYES

Lord Custos II, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

about what words random in putting?

nathalie, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

as my dear old dad used to say when he heard me drum ineptly as a child, 'its all about light and shade, innit?'... many magazines don't use bold, and italics can often be a signifier of album title information, etc, rather than EMPHASIS (see, there y'go). as a trick, its often overused, and can make the author seem somewhat autistic, but consider it just another pedal in the writer's arsenal of noise- making boxes.

stevie, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nur.

Sarah, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like CAPS as long as they aren't overused. I use them for emphasis cause it's easier touse the cap lock than it is type HTML for BOLD and I'm a lazy fucker. Italics are for titles of books, movies, albums, etc. Sean is dead on. Underlines are never fucking acceptable. Randomly on purpose doing anything like this is rarely if ever amusing.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a stylistic trick/tic like any other - it is part of the 'writing' Judd just like creative punctuation is. Some people are very good at it - Sarah, MJ Hibbett, Geoffrey Willans - other people are not.

Tom, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know. Eh 19 year old very amateur writer Ronan says I always stop myself from putting something into caps when I'm writing an actual article, I think it's lazy and if I need caps to emphasise the thing then it doesn't say much for my ability does it.

Ronan, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But it's not really used for emphasis exactly by the good people, it's used by people who have a good grasp of the rhythm of their own writing and so it exaggerates the emphases that are there anyway.

Tom, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also when I look at a review, by Stephen Wells or someone, and it's all capitals and exclamation marks I don't want to read it, I want to tear it up. Call me a wet blanket.

Having said that I'm not greatly familiar with the people you said were good, besides Sarah's ILx posts of course. I do read them.

Ronan, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha OBSERVE who tom pointedly OMITTED?¿!¡

mark s, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The reason I've been using caps in my writing is because I cannot go to your home and scream in your face directly.

Michael Daddino, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha mark s I left you out cos caps aren't your main discipline.

Tom, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stephen Wells is shit at it yes.

Tom, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael- that's your fault, not mine.

Judd Nelson, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael- that's your fault, not mine.

I know. I have to try harder. What's your street address, btw?

Michael Daddino, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Room M6 Bowland Tower Lancaster University.

I accept all hollerings, shoutings, and heckles. However, if you plan on screaming about "The movement with no name", I do retain the right to kick you in the jimmy.

Judd Nelson, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
