Official 2007 Year-End Metal Poll/List Thread

It's a bit early, no?

I suppose I could compile one just now, or over the weekend at least, and see if it does change by the end of 2007. I usually enter the ATH competition so I could use that. One year i'll win that $250 worth of goodies they have as a prize.

I'm liking the OCtober File album a lot. and thus my list is already outdated even though I only posted it yesterday.....And like I said, that's going to keep happening. But I don't think I should post updates here every time from now on, should I? Probably best to stick to Rolling Metal '07 for that.

Okay, I have listened to this Baroness album a few times and I have to say I'm not sure why everyone's flipping out on it so much. It's good in many spots, but there just doesn't seem to be that much to it. Might just be my own preconceptions and lack of METALLIC EXPERTISE? Awful lot of squibby little two-minute instrumentals....

It's all about the vibe, man.

Um, okay. As for trippy-ass metal jam-band genre-bending vibe, I like (the admittedly much colder) Between the Buried and Me record. Oh we should be talking about this on the other thread shouldn't we.

We probably should. In all seriousness, though, I just love the sonic experimentation and texture of the Baroness album. It constantly keeps you on your toes, and there's always something interesting happening. It's really about getting lost in the groove, as hippie bullshit as that sounds.

Ha ha. Normally I don't have much patience for hippie jam band nonsense, but I dig the Baroness. I usually go by feeling when evaluating an album, and I just really enjoy listening to that particular record.

And was irritated by the clever packaging because it was impossible to put away.

Baroness = if Killing Joke had grown up in the mountains of Virgina instead of an industrial city. They get an impressive apocalyptic roar going, but there's a lingering trapped-in-a-small-college-town feel, the way the southern rock trills work their way in.

I guess I really need to hear this Baroness record. And Clutch. And Rwake. And High on Fire.

That isn't in any particular order, although now that I'm looking at it, I liked a lot of the stuff in my bottom 10 more than my top 10, so I may have to do some rearranging... it's pretty fun to look at the sheer differences in each of our lists.

Yeah, absolutely. And I'm a little worried that I haven't given Alchemist enough of a fair shake.

I liked the Alchemist album more than the general critical consensus, so it's possible that I'm in the minority in loving it. Doesn't mean that I don't still love it, though.

I wish anyone else had heard Vulture Industries, because the singer is excellent (James Hetfield vs. Ian Astbury vs. Norwegian accent) and the songs are tricky and powerful. I also haven't actually heard from anyone else who's listened to The Big Dirty, but GOD DAMN that record has a hold on my heart.

Fulcher Industries sounds cool, might have to look into them. Not a big Every Time I Die fan, though. Also, I just listened through the Pig Destroyer, and while it certainly has its merits, I don't quite feel the same love for it that everyone else seems to have. Of course, my list probably isn't winning me any credit points, so...

Cool lists. Personally, I had a tough time keeping mine below 50. I liked way, way too much stuff this year...I can't see how 2008 will even come close to measuring up.

Knowing what you're talking about is not necessarily a prerequisite for writing about music. Hell, I think I know what I'm talking about maybe 13% of the time.

I don't have a metal top 10 this year, but I can say that Baroness made my overall top ten.

I liked Dødheimsgard, Baroness and 3 Inches of Blood this year. did Skeleton Witch come out this year? i like that too.

Fuck, I just can't believe people are not rating Trelldom, it's the best metal album to come out of Norway in ten years. Or at least since "Nattestid".

one of my all-time favorite bands! though i didn't know they had a new album. they've been doing the reunion thing for years now. i'm not big on reunions/reformations. i rarely get excited by them. a couple of their albums would make any all-time album list i made. not that i would make one.

overall, the terrorizer list is good. i am definitely simpatico with that mag. more than i am with rock-a-rolla.

i haven't heard the gallhammer album. the stuff i've heard on youtube is pretty bad.

Fuck, I just can't believe people are not rating Trelldom, it's the best metal album to come out of Norway in ten years. Or at least since "Nattestid".

If I had heard this album before last month it would have made my list - I'm not quite as floored by it as you are S but it's fantastic for sure.

Nate's 2007 top 7 on RYM is causing me mirth here. Trelldom acquirement is now being seriously investigated, along with Marduk.

I haven't heard the Trelldom yet. It's not like the country of Norway was idle or anything in 2007. mayhem, manes, DHG, a fucking killer red harvest album, er, there are no doubt plenty more where that came from. probably too commercial for siegbran, the everloving purist.

my favorite norwegian album of the year was probably:

except it was from Estonia.

That Red Harvest album probably should have been in my top 20. I love that album. So strong and so creative.
