Yes, it is October. But this will be here in the meantime. Feel free to post your own individual best-of lists. I'm sure DJ Martian will be kind enough to provide us with minute by minute updates of all the on-line and print polls as they become available. It's a bit early, no?
― Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 5 October 2007 20:57 (seventeen years ago)
I suppose I could compile one just now, or over the weekend at least, and see if it does change by the end of 2007. I usually enter the ATH competition so I could use that. One year i'll win that $250 worth of goodies they have as a prize.
― Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:02 (seventeen years ago)
"It's a bit early, no?"
you can wait till december 31st if you want. just starting this now cuz i had everything out and this way i won't forget the stuff i forgot the first time around.
― scott seward, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:17 (seventeen years ago)
This is the list I posted on the metal thread a couple days ago, but with #20 (which used to be Zoroaster) changed to an album I've connected with since then, and positions #4 and 5 switched. The list will likely change again, possibly hundreds of times, before the year ends, but here goes:
1. Trigger Renegade – Destroy Your Mind (Black Top Fade) 2. Necrodemon – Ice Fields Of Hyperion (Open Grave) 3. George Brigman – Rags In Skull (Bona Fide) 4. Witchcraft – The Alchemist (Rise Above) 5. American Dog – Hard (Colonial Canine) 6. Kosmos – Kosmos (The End) 7. Hardingrock - Grimen (Candlelight) 8. Mustasch – Latest Version Of The Truth (Regain) 9. Baroness – The Red Album (Relapse) 10. Kekal – The Habit Of Fire (Open Grave) 11. Korpiklaani – Tervaskanto (Napalm) 12. Moonsorrow – V: Havitetty (Unruly Sounds) 13. Lengsel – The Kiss The Hope (Whirlwind) 14. Cruachan – The Morrigan’s Call (Candlelight) 15. DHG/Dodheimsgard – Supervillain Oulast (Moonfog/The End) 16. Manes – How The World Came To An End (Candlelight) 17. The Hidden Hand – The Resurrection of Whiskey Foote (Southern Lord) 18. Minsk – The Ritual Fires Of Abandonment (Relapse) 19. Litmus – Planetfall (Candlelight) 20. Vision Bleak - The Wolves Go Hunt Their Prey (Napalm)
― xhuxk, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:26 (seventeen years ago)
I've ran up a quick list, bit it's totally subject to change. I wouldn't even take much notice of the order too, as again, that's subject to change.
1 High On Fire - Death is This Communion 2 Alcest - Souvenirs d'un autre monde 3 Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand 4 Baroness - Red 5 Orthodox - amancer en puerta oscura 6 Torche - In return 7 Ulver - Shadows Of The Sun 8 Wolves In The Throne Room - Two Hunters 9 Minsk - The Ritual Fires of Abandonment 10 Monarch - Dead Men Tell No Tales 11 Souvenir's Young America - An Ocean Without Water 12 Whitehorse - Whitehorse (20 Buck Spin) 13 Om - Pilgrimage 14 The Austrasian Goat - The Austrasian Goat 15 Grails - Burning Off Impurities 16 Nadja - Guilted By The Sun 17 Bongripper - Hippie Killer 18 Big Business - Here Comes The Waterworks 19 Loinen - Loinen 20 Slough Feg - Hardworlder 21 Black Shape Of Nexus - Black Shape Of Nexus 22 Hordes Of Satan - Hordes Of Satan 23 Witchcraft - The Alchemist 24 Hey Colossus - project-death 25 Titan - raining sun of light & love for you & you & you
Too early decide on Rosetta - Wake/Lift, Electric Wizard isn't out yet, Just missed out - Growing, Middian, Hidden Hand, Litmus, The Young Gods, Various Nadja and Boris re-releases Mammatus.
And i'm sure this thread will be peppered by Oh and I forgot... posts by myself.
If the Electric Wizard is as good as everyone says it is, it could be a contender for no1.
― Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:37 (seventeen years ago)
Fucks sake. The Neurosis would've been in the top 5.
ARGH
― Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:40 (seventeen years ago)
and possibly the new Circle.
― Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:41 (seventeen years ago)
So far for me, I would say Machine Head, Baroness, Hacride, Phazm, High On Fire, Firewind, In This Moment, Lordi, Novembers Doom, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, 69 Eyes, Bloody Panda, Symphony X, Candlemass, Devin Townsend, Himsa, Alchemist, and Earthless are possibilities for my list, it least as far as stuff that I can remember. Lots of stuff I haven't listened to yet, and lots of stuff still coming out, so we'll see.
― Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 6 October 2007 01:29 (seventeen years ago)
1. 6th best Immolation album

― xhuxk, Saturday, 6 October 2007 08:47 (seventeen years ago)
oops, forgot these (and probably some others, including lots of things I consider more metal than other people do, but I won't bother listing those):
Sir Lord Baltimore – Kingdom Come (Anthology Recordings reissue ’06) Buffalo – Volcanic Rock (Aztec reissue ’05) Buffalo – Dead Forever… (Aztec Music reissue ’06) Crack The Sky – Alive And Kickin’ Ass (Lifesong reissue ’06) King Crimson – The Condensed 21st Century Guide To: 1969-2003 (Discipline Global Mobile reissue) The Eat – It’s Not The Eat, It’s The Humidity (Alternative Tentacles reissue) J.D. ― xhuxk, Saturday, 6 October 2007 12:27 (seventeen years ago)
haha my ten would be the ten i just got in the mail. the only one of them i've seen mentioned here is Vision Bleak; my favorite is Denial Fiend's They Rise, with maybe Satan's Host and Blut Aus Nord also really pretty good. why do i always get curious about metal when i have small babies in the house?
― Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 6 October 2007 13:07 (seventeen years ago)
I'm liking the OCtober File album a lot. and thus my list is already outdated even though I only posted it yesterday.....And like I said, that's going to keep happening. But I don't think I should post updates here every time from now on, should I? Probably best to stick to Rolling Metal '07 for that.
― xhuxk, Saturday, 6 October 2007 13:26 (seventeen years ago)
Also, here is a (probably partial!) list of CDs on my shelf that I haven't gotten around to spending much (if any) time with -- at least not enough to let me know how much (if at all) I might like them:
Agua De Annique Alchemist Arch Enemy Bring Me The Horizon Blut Aus Nord Burning Saviours Coliseum Dethklok Gentlemen's Pistols Graveyard Hearse High On Fire Limbonic Art Moonspell Neurosis Nightwish Ted Nugent Oresund Space Collective Axel Rudi Pell Stonecrash (two different albums) Vreid Warfare (reissue) Xasthur
(I'm not even positive that all of those are metal per se', but they all look metal. A few of them --Nugent, Stronecrash, Warfare, Vreid, Hearse, Gentlemen's Pistols, High on Fire -- definitely have moments I like on them, but somehow haven't inspired me to devote enough energy to them, at least so far.)
― xhuxk, Saturday, 6 October 2007 13:57 (seventeen years ago)
And Sear Bliss, whoever the hell they are.
Damn that's a long, intimidating list. If there are any on there that people know I wouldn't like, feel free to tell me so I'll know not to bother with them.
― xhuxk, Saturday, 6 October 2007 14:02 (seventeen years ago)
Okay, I have listened to this Baroness album a few times and I have to say I'm not sure why everyone's flipping out on it so much. It's good in many spots, but there just doesn't seem to be that much to it. Might just be my own preconceptions and lack of METALLIC EXPERTISE? Awful lot of squibby little two-minute instrumentals....
― Dimension 5ive, Friday, 12 October 2007 18:14 (seventeen years ago)
It's all about the vibe, man.
― Jeff Treppel, Friday, 12 October 2007 19:14 (seventeen years ago)
Um, okay. As for trippy-ass metal jam-band genre-bending vibe, I like (the admittedly much colder) Between the Buried and Me record. Oh we should be talking about this on the other thread shouldn't we.
― Dimension 5ive, Friday, 12 October 2007 19:31 (seventeen years ago)
Here's my list (as of three weeks ago), which was also submitted to Decibel. As of right now, I'd be squeezing the new Dillinger Escape Plan somewhere in the top 15.
1. Alcest – Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde 2. Pig Destroyer – Phantom Limb 3. Baroness – The Red Album 4. Jesu – Conqueror 5. Neurosis – Given to the Rising 6. Between the Buried and Me – Colors 7. Machine Head – The Blackening 8. High on Fire – Death is This Communion 9. Clutch – From Beale Street to Oblivion 10. Caina – Mourner 11. Witchcraft – The Alchemist 12. Akercocke - Antichrist 13. Watain – Sworn to the Dark 14. The Angelic Process – Weighing Souls With Sand 15. The Howling Wind – Pestilence and Peril 16. Cephalic Carnage – Xenosapien 17. Hacride – Amoeba 18. Rwake – Voices of Omens 19. Municipal Waste – The Art of Partying 20. 3 Inches of Blood – Fire Up the Blades
Some very close runners-up:
Bloody Panda – Pheromones Symphony X – Paradise Lost Wold – Screech Owl The Red Chord – Prey For Eyes Dimmu Borgir – In Sorte Diaboli Behemoth – The Apostasy Korpiklaani – Tervaskanto Therion – Gothic Kabbalah Atavist – II: Ruined Cobalt – Eater of Birds Wolves in the Throne Room – Two Hunters Minsk – The Ritual Fires of Abandonment Moonsorrow – V: Havitetty Bergraven – Dodsvisioner The End – Elementary Year of No Light - Nord Through the Eyes of the Dead – Malice The Black Dahlia Murder - Nocturnal Graf Orlock – Destination Time Tomorrow Big Business – Here Come the Waterworks Within Temptation - The Heart of Everything Arch Enemy - Rise of the Tyrant
― A. Begrand, Friday, 12 October 2007 19:59 (seventeen years ago)
And that new Rosetta too, which is pretty killer.
― A. Begrand, Friday, 12 October 2007 20:00 (seventeen years ago)
x-Post
We probably should. In all seriousness, though, I just love the sonic experimentation and texture of the Baroness album. It constantly keeps you on your toes, and there's always something interesting happening. It's really about getting lost in the groove, as hippie bullshit as that sounds.
― Jeff Treppel, Friday, 12 October 2007 20:01 (seventeen years ago)
Agh, I forgot to mention Portal!
― A. Begrand, Friday, 12 October 2007 20:02 (seventeen years ago)
Man, I need to listen to some of the stuff on your list, Adrien.
― Jeff Treppel, Friday, 12 October 2007 20:03 (seventeen years ago)
well i've only had baroness for a few days, jeff, so yeah maybe i'll "trip out" to the "cool vibe" of "southern white guys screwing around on guitars." hey it has worked before!
― Dimension 5ive, Friday, 12 October 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago)
Ha ha. Normally I don't have much patience for hippie jam band nonsense, but I dig the Baroness. I usually go by feeling when evaluating an album, and I just really enjoy listening to that particular record.
― Jeff Treppel, Friday, 12 October 2007 20:11 (seventeen years ago)
that's cool, i understand. ears are the only thing that matter. i will employ mine on the red album this weekend while cleaning up the garage.
― Dimension 5ive, Friday, 12 October 2007 20:21 (seventeen years ago)
my dB list:
Foetopsy - In the Bathroom (Barbarian) Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb (Relapse) Om - Pilgrimage (Southern Lord) Bloody Panda - Pheromone (Level Plane) Mayhem - Ordo ad Chao (Season of Mist) Darkthrone - F.O.A.D. (Peaceville) Rotting Christ - Theogonia (Season of Mist) Vital Remains - Icons of Evil (Century Media) Profanatica - Profananitas de Domonatia (Hells Headbangers) Various Artists - For the Sick: A Tribute to Eyehategod (Emetic)
actually just finally hearing Baroness right now. Shit won't play on my home stereo because of the filesharing precautions = I don't get around to it 'til I have a fair amount of patience. It's pretty good to my ears, sounds like southern metal Fugazi. Rwake nearly made the list, Graf Orlock to, I listened to that thing a lot. And was irritated by the clever packaging because it was impossible to put away.
― J0hn D., Saturday, 13 October 2007 18:37 (seventeen years ago)
gaaah to=too, ugh
Am I just being a jerk if I think that the UGK record is about as metal as anything else I've heard this year?
― Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 13 October 2007 19:03 (seventeen years ago)
depends on who you talk too D5, I got a friend north of here who might wanna go there with you - to me the UGK record sounds rather more rap than metal
― J0hn D., Saturday, 13 October 2007 19:46 (seventeen years ago)
like, so much more so that to call it "metal" seems kinda of willful and precious
whoa it's a rap album? dag, i'll have to listen to it a little closer i guess. my bad!!1
― Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 13 October 2007 20:03 (seventeen years ago)
Baroness = if Killing Joke had grown up in the mountains of Virgina instead of an industrial city. They get an impressive apocalyptic roar going, but there's a lingering trapped-in-a-small-college-town feel, the way the southern rock trills work their way in.
― bendy, Saturday, 13 October 2007 21:10 (seventeen years ago)
I guess I really need to hear this Baroness record. And Clutch. And Rwake. And High on Fire.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 13 October 2007 21:20 (seventeen years ago)
This is what happens when I drop out of the Rolling Metal thread in May.

Torche vinyl (USA Version) comes with a cd! And it's being repressed too. Robotic Empire are taking pre-orders.
― Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:46 (seventeen years ago)
Here's the Top 20 I sent to Revolver. Warning: More than one person who writes for Decibel and/or Revolver have called me a "hipster"
1. Big Business - Here Come The Waterworks 2. Baroness - The Red Album 3. Wold - Screech Owl 4. Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand 5. Wolves In The Throne Room - Two Hunters 6. Behemoth - The Apostasy 7. V.E.G.A. - Cocaine 8. Nadja - Touched 9. Circle - Katapult 10. Carlos Giffoni - Arrogance 11. Deathspell Omega - Fas - Itr Maledicti, In Ignem Aeternum 12. Though after many, many relistens, Dillinger Escape Plan would be in my top 2.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:22 (seventeen years ago)
I like a lot on that list.
― Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:26 (seventeen years ago)
That isn't in any particular order, although now that I'm looking at it, I liked a lot of the stuff in my bottom 10 more than my top 10, so I may have to do some rearranging... it's pretty fun to look at the sheer differences in each of our lists.
― Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:21 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, absolutely. And I'm a little worried that I haven't given Alchemist enough of a fair shake.
― Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:26 (seventeen years ago)
I liked the Alchemist album more than the general critical consensus, so it's possible that I'm in the minority in loving it. Doesn't mean that I don't still love it, though.
― Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:33 (seventeen years ago)
I wish anyone else had heard Vulture Industries, because the singer is excellent (James Hetfield vs. Ian Astbury vs. Norwegian accent) and the songs are tricky and powerful. I also haven't actually heard from anyone else who's listened to The Big Dirty, but GOD DAMN that record has a hold on my heart.
― Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:44 (seventeen years ago)
Fulcher Industries sounds cool, might have to look into them. Not a big Every Time I Die fan, though. Also, I just listened through the Pig Destroyer, and while it certainly has its merits, I don't quite feel the same love for it that everyone else seems to have. Of course, my list probably isn't winning me any credit points, so...
― Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:49 (seventeen years ago)
(cred, not credit)
― Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:50 (seventeen years ago)
Cool lists. Personally, I had a tough time keeping mine below 50. I liked way, way too much stuff this year...I can't see how 2008 will even come close to measuring up.
― A. Begrand, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:22 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah but (unlike me) you actually know what you're talking about!
― Dimension 5ive, Thursday, 13 December 2007 02:12 (seventeen years ago)
Knowing what you're talking about is not necessarily a prerequisite for writing about music. Hell, I think I know what I'm talking about maybe 13% of the time.
― Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 13 December 2007 02:59 (seventeen years ago)
I don't have a metal top 10 this year, but I can say that Baroness made my overall top ten.
― fukasaku tollbooth, Thursday, 13 December 2007 12:31 (seventeen years ago)
I liked Dødheimsgard, Baroness and 3 Inches of Blood this year. did Skeleton Witch come out this year? i like that too.
― chaki, Friday, 14 December 2007 03:44 (seventeen years ago)
my nephew is flipping out over the last Mayhem.
Wait... people have not-metal top tens? That was my top 20 for the year!

Fuck, I just can't believe people are not rating Trelldom, it's the best metal album to come out of Norway in ten years. Or at least since "Nattestid".

what do you think of the terrorizer list dj?
― Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 4 January 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)
Missing from Terrorizer list:
Dark Tranquillity Novembre Paradise Lost The Angelic Process Detonation Ghost Brigade Hacride In Lingua Mortua Minsk Rosetta The Ocean Officium Triste Portal Red Harvest Swallow the Sun Vehementer Nos Virgin Black V: 28 Wolves in the Throne Room
Kick out of the Terrorizer 40:
2 Mayhem - Ordo Ad Chao (Season Of Mist) - crap production
6 Darkthrone - FOAD (Peaceville) - not my thang, one tricky pony
9 Gallhammer - Ill Innocence (Peaceville) - don't rate - overhyped nonsense with crap production
15 Municipal Waste - The Art Of Partying (Earache) NME approved retro-Thrash, not my thang
17 Witchcraft - Alchemist (Rise Above) - surprised to see this retro sounding band in the Terrorizer list
22 Type O Negative - Dead Again (Nuclear Blast) WHAT THE F___K - this band are well past their best
26 Megadeth - United Abominations (Roadrunner) Surprised to see this in the Terrorizer best of list
35 Subhumans - Internal Riot (Bluurg) some sort of punk band?
36 Turisas - The Varangian Way (Century Media) - Battle metal - not my thang
38 Doomsword - My Name Will Live On (Dragonheart) WHO?
― djmartian, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)
I like the Witchcraft
― Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)
Witchcraft is the type of band I expect Classic Rock to love

"some sort of punk band?"
one of my all-time favorite bands! though i didn't know they had a new album. they've been doing the reunion thing for years now. i'm not big on reunions/reformations. i rarely get excited by them. a couple of their albums would make any all-time album list i made. not that i would make one.
― scott seward, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:22 (seventeen years ago)
overall, the terrorizer list is good. i am definitely simpatico with that mag. more than i am with rock-a-rolla.
― scott seward, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)
i haven't heard the gallhammer album. the stuff i've heard on youtube is pretty bad.
― scott seward, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:26 (seventeen years ago)
If I had heard this album before last month it would have made my list - I'm not quite as floored by it as you are S but it's fantastic for sure.

Nate's 2007 top 7 on RYM is causing me mirth here. Trelldom acquirement is now being seriously investigated, along with Marduk.
― Just got offed, Friday, 4 January 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)
I haven't heard the Trelldom yet. It's not like the country of Norway was idle or anything in 2007. mayhem, manes, DHG, a fucking killer red harvest album, er, there are no doubt plenty more where that came from. probably too commercial for siegbran, the everloving purist.
my favorite norwegian album of the year was probably:
16 – Tharaphita – Iidsetel Sunkjatel Radadel
except it was from Estonia.
― scott seward, Saturday, 5 January 2008 01:31 (seventeen years ago)
That Red Harvest album probably should have been in my top 20. I love that album. So strong and so creative.
