I always loved her playing but never owned anything else but Blue Flames, which I didn't dig as much. I've never been a huge fan of Stanley Turrentine (her husband).
This collection really captures her at her best though. She strikes the exact right balance between churchiness and swing.

I've never heard Shirley Scott!
My underdog organ favorite is Mel Rhyne, I fucking love his records with Kenny Washington and Peter Bernstein.

shirley's work w/ (onetime husband) stanley turrentine is nice. try Let It Go on Impulse
in general i find jazz-organ albums to be disappointing. one jimmy smith record is all you need TBH. I've got a big john patton LP on blue note that's good and larry young's Lawrence of Newark is great but waay too spacey to be considered "organ jazz"
pleaze feel free to disagree

Jordan, I saw Mel Rhyne a few weeks ago w/Jimmy Cobb and some young Russian guitarist. Jimmy Cobb was old and sloppy but still kind of awesome. Mel Rhyne was unfortunately just old and sounded kind of weak. I think he might have had his volume a bit low, and he just played these really boring middle-range lines on every song. I like the stuff he did with Wes though.

You would never even know how much you need to hear this record.

There's something about organ with upright. I guess it became less common because people decided the whole point of an organ was to save money by not having to hire a bass player instead of to sound awesome WITH a bass player.

Really wanted to see The Deep Blue Organ Trio when they played Dizzy's Monday before last but couldn't make it

Been digging this one a lot lately, I find it to have a bit more fire (pun intended) than a lot of organ jazz records.

One of my new favorite records. Maybe because he’s not the leader of the session, Big John Patton lays back on the frantic, repetitive licks favored by many, and leaves space for tasty solos by Grant, Joe Henderson and Johnny Coles. Two Ray Charles compositions and one by Lucky Millinder make for a swingin’ mood throughout.
