Svengali

Looking at the AON thread it struck me just how dull they became once they lost the input of Paul Morley. As Dr C would put it their 'world' which was smart, playful and exotic suddenly became workaday and humdrum.

So which non musical collaborators, contributed most to an acts appeal? And are they underrated in pop music history?

Contributed to their appeal, or just contributed? If the latter, I'll nominate Colonel Tom Parker.

Someone's itchin' to say George Martin. Although, you could consider him to be musical.

So - clarify - do musician/producers count? or do you just mean entourage?

... Andy Warhol...BTW

I'm not too sure quite what I mean :-) Someone who doesn't contribute musically other than to say you should do this or stop doing that. More importantly someone who acts as a mentor, offering a vision or an ideology, or as mark s sez acting as a cliche filter. Someone who in a way contributes more than the band themselves, or takes the band from being merely mundane to something quite extraordinarty. Could be a manager, but not necessarily.

I'd go along with Bill Drummond and Maclaren, Tom Watkins with Bros (but not the PSB), Warhol to an extent. But definitely not the old school of management, Don Arden,Peter Grant
