We've done "Village Green Preservation Society" already. About time we do their best album as well.

And I just had to vote for "Waterloo Sunset" like everyone else will also do. But kind of regret I don't have the ability to vote for "Afternoon Tea" as well.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 7 October 2007 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

We should pretend it's 'best track except Waterloo Sunset' - get second preferences - in which case I'm voting for David Watts

sonofstan, Sunday, 7 October 2007 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

Oooooooooooh GOD! This is my favourite Kinks album! Well done, Geir! :)

Bimble, Sunday, 7 October 2007 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

Repeat after me: thou shalt not vote for Waterloo Sunset. We have to keep things interesting here.

Bimble, Sunday, 7 October 2007 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

LOVE ME TIL THE SUN SHINES! I must play this right now.

Bimble, Sunday, 7 October 2007 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

FA FA FA FA FA FA FA FA
I AM A DULL AND SIMPLE LAD

But no, we must NOT vote for David Watts, either. MUST KEEP IT INTERESTING.

Bimble, Sunday, 7 October 2007 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

Lazy old Sun?

Christ almighty god, how could you CHOOSE off this album??!!

Bimble, Sunday, 7 October 2007 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

Repeat after me: thou shalt not vote for Waterloo Sunset. We have to keep things interesting here.

Too late. It's just too damn good to pass up. Who cares how obvious a choice it is, anywaty?

JN$OT, Sunday, 7 October 2007 14:46 (seventeen years ago)

God, this is just such a GORGEOUS Autumn album, though!
"End of The Season"@@@

Lordy.

Bimble, Sunday, 7 October 2007 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

What was that earlier Kinks album I liked too?...I must look it up...
Kinda Kinks, with "Look For Me Baby" and "So Long"...

Even the bonus CD has "See My Friends"!

Thanks ILX, this is an area of music I wasn't really comfortable with until now. Too many bad memories has not stopped me from loving Kinks, thanks to you.

Trying to resist Waterloo Sunset is very hard, very difficult indeed.

Bimble, Sunday, 7 October 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

And I just had to vote for "Waterloo Sunset" like everyone else will also do.
I think I take part in these polls just so I can pick something other than the song Geir tells me I'm gonna choose.

Jazzbo, Sunday, 7 October 2007 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

Wait...this is really embarassing but I didn't mention my fave song off Kinda Kinks after all...it's not "So Long" but "Got My Feet On The Ground".
Thanks as always ILM.

Bimble, Sunday, 7 October 2007 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

The Kinks are the fire and the reason. Have you not heard "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy"?

Bimble, Sunday, 7 October 2007 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

I'm so excited, I just found my LP of ex-Chameleons band the Reegs where they covered See My Friends! I'm going to die when that needle hits, baby.

Bimble, Sunday, 7 October 2007 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

Love Me till the Sun Shines with Death of Clown as a second. Dave takes it for me on this one.

dan selzer, Sunday, 7 October 2007 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

"Harry Rag" frequently gets called the worst track here, and yet it's my favourite one here (and gets my vote.) Interesting enough for ya?

(Yes, "Waterloo Sunset" is #2.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Sunday, 7 October 2007 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

I say c'mon, "Waterloo Sunset" is it. "David Watts" is second, but really.

Euler, Sunday, 7 October 2007 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

"Two Sisters" for me.

zeus, Sunday, 7 October 2007 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

Love Me till the Sun Shines with Death of Clown as a second. Dave takes it for me on this one.

i totally agree. what's more, i can't decide which song is my fave.

QuantumNoise, Sunday, 7 October 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

What a fantastic album - and I've only been acquainted with it since last Thursday evening...

'Lazy Old Sun' slightly in front of 'Two Sisters'

Bob Six, Sunday, 7 October 2007 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

Yes! Please vote for Harry Rag one and all!

Bimble, Sunday, 7 October 2007 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

lol @ Geit complaining about people voting for "the hit" on the other kinks thread, and now this

roxymuzak, Sunday, 7 October 2007 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

*Geir

roxymuzak, Sunday, 7 October 2007 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

I like this one myself. OK, "Waterloo Sunset" and "David Watts" are sure great. But the one I love is "End of the Season." I hate it myself when summer is over.

whisperineddhurt, Sunday, 7 October 2007 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

The last few Kinks polls are really driving home to me how much I prefer Arthur to SE and Village Green. I eagerly await that poll (Victoria vs. Shangri La deathmatch?) and hope that the bonus tracks (King Kong as spoiler!) get included.

Anyway, I really like the weirdness of Lazy Old Sun. Seem to be going for the "strange songs" in these polls.

dlp9001, Sunday, 7 October 2007 19:45 (seventeen years ago)

btw probably a complete noob's question, but are the bird sounds on 'End of the Season' the same as Pink Floyd's 'Cirrus Minor'?

Bob Six, Sunday, 7 October 2007 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

Confession time: as much as I love The Kinks, I've never really cared for 'Waterloo Sunset." I mean, yes, it's a pretty track. But I've never understood what the big deal is -- why it captures more of the melancholy sweetness than "Days" or "Autumn Almanac," or life's delights than "Wonderboy."

Don't get me wrong: it's a nice song. But I've never heard or read a convinving argument that it's either Davies' melodic or lyrical peak as a writer. Given the vast riches of his catalogue, it has always seemed more like one of many of his top-notch vignettes.

Thus, "End of the Season" or the splendid "David Watts."

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 7 October 2007 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

!

sonofstan, Sunday, 7 October 2007 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

Burn the witches! Hahaha (just kidding)

Bimble, Sunday, 7 October 2007 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

lol @ Geit complaining about people voting for "the hit" on the other kinks thread, and now this

In this case, it is obviously the best. Which it isn't at all on "Village Green Preservation Society" - probably only most well-known because it's the title track.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 7 October 2007 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

But I've never heard or read a convinving argument that it's either Davies' melodic or lyrical peak as a writer.

I consider it his melodic peak. And also possibly his best ever arrangement (those backing vocals!). Lyrically he has often been better.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 7 October 2007 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

xpost or because it's great and captures the spirit of the entire album

roxymuzak, Sunday, 7 October 2007 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

"Repeat after me: thou shalt not vote for Waterloo Sunset. We have to keep things interesting here."

But the only songs I like on this one are Waterloo Sunset (which I voted for without hesitation) and David Watts. (Village Green IS better!)

I eat cannibals, Monday, 8 October 2007 02:25 (seventeen years ago)

you should listen to "Love Me Til The Sun Shines" again!

sleeve, Monday, 8 October 2007 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

the "Love Me Til The Sun Shines" that does it for me is the live one on that BBC radio comp. Whoa.

Romeo Jones, Monday, 8 October 2007 03:33 (seventeen years ago)

I went with Death of a Clown. I'm also a big fan of Funny Face, which will probably end up at the bottom.

clotpoll, Monday, 8 October 2007 03:43 (seventeen years ago)

as much as I love The Kinks, I've never really cared for 'Waterloo Sunset."

Speechless. I think my 2nd favourite song on this album is "Two Sisters", what a lovely song.

Tom D., Tuesday, 9 October 2007 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, that's what I'm voting for.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

damn, I hadn't listened to this record in ages. I would like to change my vote to Funny Face! Easily my favorite song on the record.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

Dave is very strong on this album.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:43 (seventeen years ago)

forgot Dave wrote Funny Face!

dan selzer, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 12 October 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Doesn't anyone like Situation Vacant? That one isn't bad either. This is a really difficult poll.

Bimble, Saturday, 13 October 2007 03:40 (seventeen years ago)

I only hope that if either David Watts or Waterloo wins, that it shall be David Watts.

Bimble, Saturday, 13 October 2007 03:40 (seventeen years ago)

Also big shoutout to dlp9001 (one of my fave posters on ILM, btw) for mentioning "Arthur"! I confess I STILL do not have that one, and I shall have to remedy this immediately.

Bimble, Saturday, 13 October 2007 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

Brilliant album and a difficult choice, especially since that Waterloo Sunset casts such a long shadow, arf arf. Most of the songs are about as great as all the rest though. It's funny with the Kinks that so much of their stuff is difficult to rate since it's all so good. I'm not much of a Dave fan although Suzannah's Still Alive which is on my version as a bonus is my favourite one of his. I voted for Harry Rag cos I really like the ramshackle busker vibe, which is a hallmark of the whole album.

everything, Saturday, 13 October 2007 03:55 (seventeen years ago)

what does he say at the start of DAVID WATTS?

pisces, Saturday, 13 October 2007 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

I always thought it was: "This is the master, Shel. Nice and smooth"

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 13 October 2007 13:05 (seventeen years ago)

You ILXors are making me pull this right out of my CD stacks AGAIN. I want Harry Rag and Lazy Old Sun to just take this poll by storm.

Bimble, Saturday, 13 October 2007 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

Along with Love Me Til The Sun Shines of course. I'd love to hear the BBC comp version, not sure if I have yet.

Bimble, Saturday, 13 October 2007 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

Not sure about the "Shel" part but he definitely says "This is the Master/Nice & Smooth" at the beginning of David Watts. And behold, little 'ol Blur was born.

Bimble, Saturday, 13 October 2007 13:19 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Saturday, 13 October 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

An expected landslide, but the rest of the album is excellent too.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 14 October 2007 01:18 (seventeen years ago)

justice

roxymuzak, Sunday, 14 October 2007 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

kind of a lame result (tho david watts is awesome)

Dominique, Sunday, 14 October 2007 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

Predictably, "No Return" failed to make a blip on anyone's radar. For all that I remember of it, there might as well be two minutes of silence separating "Two Sisters" from "Harry Rag."

hawth, Sunday, 14 October 2007 03:10 (seventeen years ago)

Geir, perhaps a more interesting poll would have been "Best Song on Something Else Other Than Waterloo Sunset..."

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 14 October 2007 05:42 (seventeen years ago)

Absolutely...but as far as sheer overall numbers are involved, I'm happy this many people voted. Also, Lazy Old Sun got more recognition than I thought it might.

Can we do another one with no Waterloo Sunset allowed, Geir? Really it would be a fascinating experiment, but I'll leave it up to you.

Bimble, Sunday, 14 October 2007 06:11 (seventeen years ago)

"no return," ray davies' bossa nova moment, is absolutely stunning.
