Best Lennon-penned Beatles song

Because I'm bored.

I'm leaving out obvious McCartney collabs (A Day in the Life, Hard Day's Night, She Loves You, etc.) and just sticking to the songs that are primarily Lennon's.

"Strawberry Fields Forever".

After "I Am The Walrus", he lost it, in spite of odd great ones such as "Across The Universe" and "Because".

Geir Hongro, Monday, 8 October 2007 07:20 (eighteen years ago)

No 'Goodnight'?

Billy Dods, Monday, 8 October 2007 09:03 (eighteen years ago)

No vote from me. I'm keeping my powder dry for the 'best song ever' poll, for which I have spent the last three months typing the opening post. It should be ready by Christmas. I predict 'Shaddup You Face' to win, with two votes.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 8 October 2007 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

It could happen, unless you add "Chewing Gum" in there.

Mark G, Monday, 8 October 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

Jeez, I'm having a much tougher time with this than with the McCartney poll...I'm torn between "There's A Place," "Ticket To Ride," and "Revolution 9."

Sara Sara Sara, Monday, 8 October 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

No "In My Life"?

The guy who just votes in polls, Monday, 8 October 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, no "In My Life" means that it's between "Help," "There's a Place," "Ticket to Ride" and "Girl" for me. Of the four, I think I'll go with "Ticket to Ride" today.

JN$OT, Monday, 8 October 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

There's been quite a bit of debate over who was the primary writer of "In My Life", so I didn't include that one. I totally spaced out "Good Night".

Darin, Monday, 8 October 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

"Girl"

iago g., Monday, 8 October 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

not as impossible as mccartney's, only because strawberry fields is in here, but without that, I'd have a pretty hard time picking. there's a place! not a second time! both so overlooked.

akm, Monday, 8 October 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

This is hard! I went with "Norwegian Wood".

Z S, Monday, 8 October 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

half of what i say is meaningless

sleep, Monday, 8 October 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, now that I think about it, I have started to automatically exclude the obvious number one choice, which is Strawberry Fields, and rightly so...

iago g., Monday, 8 October 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

Am I the only one who thinks "Strawberry Fields Forever" is terribly overrated?

musically, Monday, 8 October 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

I also feel the same way about "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "All You Need Is Love". But I absolutely adore just about everything else of his.

And is "Ticket to Ride" really more of a John song than a Paul song?

musically, Monday, 8 October 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure what McCartney contributed to Ticket to Ride besides the drum pattern and harmony vocals (not to say that wasn't a huge contribution).

Darin, Monday, 8 October 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

"That Means A Lot" was Paul's attempt at writing something like "Ticket To Ride."

Sara Sara Sara, Monday, 8 October 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in a light mood for a Monday so I went with "You Can't Do That"! funkiest of his 'domineering creep' line of products

tremendoid, Monday, 8 October 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

"There's a Place" still sounds like nothing else.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

Happy birthday John. I voted for "Dear Prudence."

Davey D, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

"I'm Only Sleeping". Amazing, amazing song.

Erock Zombie, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 00:22 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I'll throw in "Cry Baby Cry" as a darkhorse, but I could also go with "Ballad of John and Yoko" or "And Your Bird Can Sing."

Fitzcarraldo, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)

Or "Sexy Sadie."

Fitzcarraldo, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

"Norwegian Wood"

DavidM, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 07:50 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Wow.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

Kinda what I expected. I'da voted for 'Dear Prudence'.

wateryDomestic, Thursday, 18 October 2007 04:33 (eighteen years ago)

Kinda as expected. "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy" are overrated, but that was also expected.
