Sort of felt like voting for "Something", but chose the underrated "You Like Me Too Much" just for a change (and because it's roughly just as good)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 8 October 2007 07:26 (seventeen years ago)

"But if I seem to be unkind, it isn't me it's just my mind, confusing things"

Mark G, Monday, 8 October 2007 10:06 (seventeen years ago)

It's not my favorite, but let me put a good word in for "It's All Too Much," which has one of the last recorded instances of Paul and George gettin' along and crazy guitar that George should have played more often.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 8 October 2007 11:04 (seventeen years ago)

The last recorded instance of Paul and George gettin' along was the version of "I me mine" recorded in 1970.

Until the beatles reunion that is.

Mark G, Monday, 8 October 2007 11:08 (seventeen years ago)

Yep. Paul and Harrison being enemies is a myth created by those who think that John Lennon was the only genius that mattered and that McCartney was the one who broke up The Beatles, not Yoko Ono which is the actual truth.

(After all, Lennon stopped writing good songs once he met Yoko - she was the one who made him get into all that modernist avant garde idiocy)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 8 October 2007 11:49 (seventeen years ago)

"Within You Without You"

Goes will with a Chicken Biryani

PhilK, Monday, 8 October 2007 12:05 (seventeen years ago)

"well"

PhilK, Monday, 8 October 2007 12:06 (seventeen years ago)

(After all, Lennon stopped writing good songs once he met Yoko - she was the one who made him get into all that modernist avant garde idiocy)

I know, in 1966 he was listening to Albert Ayler and AMM, making tape-collage pieces, and...oh wait, that was MCCARTNEY. The suite on Abbey Road excepted, he was the one who stopped writing good songs after Lennon met Yoko.

Actually, Lennon wrote some of his best songs after meeting Yoko: Revolution (single, 1, and 9), Happiness is a Warm Gun, Mean Mr. Mustard, not to mention the entire JL/POB album.

Yes, that's exactly what this Press to Play fan thinks.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 8 October 2007 13:05 (seventeen years ago)

"Here Comes the Sun", though the Nina Simone version is much better than the Beatles one. Actually, many Beatles tunes are better as cover versions sung by better singers than The Beatles.

Tuomas, Monday, 8 October 2007 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

I'm goin with Sinatra, "Something"

iago g., Monday, 8 October 2007 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

I never really liked Something all that much, but the version on Anthology 3 is outstanding.

Here Comes the Sun

"If I Needed Someone," easy.

Flipping a coin between "Long, Long, Long" and "Blue Jay Way"

(seconds later)

"Blue Jay Way"

Z S, Monday, 8 October 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

probably Taxman or Long, Long, Long but I'd just as soon old brown shoe as any of them.

will, Monday, 8 October 2007 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

listen to

will, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 00:28 (seventeen years ago)

"Here Comes the Sun", also largely for the Nina Simone cover. I like the Beatles version too.

Mark Rich@rdson, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:36 (seventeen years ago)

George contributed many great songs to the Beatles catalogue, but "Here Comes the Sun" is a diamond.

Joe, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:42 (seventeen years ago)

where's the ringo thread???

ciderpress, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 03:02 (seventeen years ago)

oh i found it

ciderpress, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 03:02 (seventeen years ago)

It says "It's only me, it's not my mind" fwiw.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 03:51 (seventeen years ago)

ah but in "I me mine" (the book) he stated that in retrospect, it should have been that way.

Mark G, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 13:45 (seventeen years ago)

Correct.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 13:45 (seventeen years ago)

Paul and Harrison being enemies is a myth created by those who think that John Lennon was the only genius that mattered and that McCartney was the one who broke up The Beatles, not Yoko Ono which is the actual truth

Oh and "Yoko broke up the Beatles" isn't a myth? Holy jesus, Geir, how do you sleep? How DO you sleep?

A breakup can almost never be attributed to one cause, esp. this particular breakup.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

'Long Long Long', contender for eeriest Beatles song.

Gavin in Leeds, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

old brown shoe... love the line:
"If I grow up I'll be a singer wearing rings on every finger."

geekears, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

I've always been fondest of "I want a short-haired girl who sometimes wears it twice as long".

I voted for Here Comes The Sun, though, because it cheers me up, just like it's supposed to.

Alba, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

"Old Brown Shoe" has a great solo and Macca bassline.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

It will delight you all to know that George's solo catalogue is, as of today, available on iTunes.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

hey that IS good news! There are a bunch of individual tracks of his I'd like good digital copies of ("Cheer Down", "Don't Let Me Wait Too Long" especially)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

I like them both. "Blow Away" is very nice too.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

what the fuck the only version of Cheer Down available is a live version from Japan?!?? I blame Mel Gibson

(I guess I never shoulda thrown out that cassingle)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

Oh and "Yoko broke up the Beatles" isn't a myth?

Well, she was the one who destroyed John Lennon. He was a genius until 1967. From 1968 onwards he would usually shift between boring blues-based rock'n'roll and pointless experimental avant garde. Just throwing in the occasional but very rare highlight such as "Imagine", "Love", "Oh My Love" and "Jealous Guy".

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

"destroyed John Lennon." Geir hates marriage!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

I'd be more inclined to blame the heroin and deeprooted emotional/psych issues... I'm kinda glad Geir hates Yoko, being the antithesis of Geir's ethos is something to be proud of.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

Well, she was the one who destroyed John Lennon.

That's another (extremely debatable) matter. Do you honestly think The Beatles would have stayed together had Yoko Ono not come along?

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

don't go there

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

"destroyed John Lennon." Geir hates marriage!

John was married when he met Yoko. To a considerably more sensible woman.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

Oh hells no! And just when I was entertaining some warm thoughts for your consistently ridiculed positions...

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

"sensible" = stays home and does the dishes and keeps her mouth shut about cheating, abusive, asshole drug addict husband

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

"Old Brown Shoe" has a great solo and Macca bassline.

except it's george playing bass. he turned the tables on ol' macca, who would routinely tell george what to play, and sometimes just play lead guitar himself (which was actually probably a good idea, as it resulted in the solos on "taxman" and "good morning, good morning"). so george got his revenge by playing bass himself on "old brown shoe." masterfully, too.

Lawrence the Looter, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

really?? nice to know. The only songs on which I know he definitely played are "Back in the U.S.S.R." (with John, no?) and one of those Let It Be numbers.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 01:53 (seventeen years ago)

Fuck you, Geir!

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 06:23 (seventeen years ago)

Well said, Roxy!

Geir in hating Yoko Ono and James Brown/hip hop shocker = We must not encourage survivors of various Euro-American inflicted holocausts, nein?

Yay, Herr Hongro!

JN$OT, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

Yoko was a better musician than John.

(ok, geir. go for it. Well, go something anyroad!)

Mark G, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 09:46 (seventeen years ago)

my wife says "it's all too much" and who am i to argue?

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

long long long

69, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

xpost I like the very long version that was on umm... Anthology three? Or was it a bootleg? Seven minutes, anyway.

Mark G, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:36 (seventeen years ago)

Flipping a coin between "Long, Long, Long" and "Blue Jay Way"
(seconds later)
"Blue Jay Way"
-- Z S

If that's not a secret, how many times did ya flip that coin eh? :)

Um, if I were to flip same, I'd flip at least the-best-of-seven - but! I'd have to flip betwixt "Something" and "Here Comes The Sun", really.

t**t, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

p.s. i love you,
geir,
but i want to tell you it's all too much.

t**t, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

my wife says "it's all too much" and who am i to argue?

Well, it depends. Is she destroying your recording career if not history itself? Or is she a considerably more sensible, even supplicant woman?

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

"Taxman"

Fitzcarraldo, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

For the 93rd time: If Yoko DID break 'em up (which she didn't), GOOD FOR HER! All the better to leave behind a totally pristine catalogue and preserve forever the legacy of the greatest (maybe) pop band of ever, just ahead of the deterioration. And too bad she couldn't have set her sights on Mick Jagger as well. (And yeah, I'll take Yoko's POB over John's, anyday.)

"If I Needed Someone" for me.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 06:08 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, with that brilliant bridge:

"Ahhhhhhhhhh. Ahhhhhhhhhhh."
(new note) "Ahhhhhhhhhhh."
(original note) "Ahhhhhhhhhh."

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 06:21 (seventeen years ago)

All the better to leave behind a totally pristine catalogue and preserve forever the legacy of the greatest (maybe) pop band of ever, just ahead of the deterioration

But why then make her own husband detoriate. After all that's all she did, even though luckily he recovered and made nothing even remotely as bad as that awful and musically worthless "Plastic Ono Band" album, where "Love" was the only decent song.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 08:28 (seventeen years ago)

i sigh, and then I cry, and wonder why.

Mark G, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 08:30 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

oh for Christ's sake

xxxpost

Davey D, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

Entirely appropriate.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 23:49 (seventeen years ago)

But why then make her own husband detoriate. After all that's all she did, even though luckily he recovered and made nothing even remotely as bad as that awful and musically worthless "Plastic Ono Band" album, where "Love" was the only decent song.

this is obviously incorrect. john's best work was his plastic ono band album and his guitar playing on yoko's plastic ono band album. both were far more melodically and harmonically richer and more complex than most anything he'd attempted before, particularly the musically worthless "being for the benefit of mr. kite."

Lawrence the Looter, Thursday, 18 October 2007 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

Would disagree with those records being harmonically and melodically richer.

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 18 October 2007 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

Would disagree with both opinions expressed here about them.

roxymuzak, Thursday, 18 October 2007 00:20 (seventeen years ago)

Still puzzled by all the love for "Long Long Long."
