I've been asked to DJ a viking party in the woods. It would be nice to drop some Norse mythology if I can, but other than KLF's "America (What Time Is Love?)" and a bit of Enslaved (which I doubt will go down well), I'm pretty stuck for Viking-y music to play. Any suggestions?

I think there's a lot of black/folk metal with Viking themes, but I don't the genre well enough to give any names.

Hedningarna is a good suggestion in general. The Swedish folk rocker Nordman might work as well. Loituma is Finnish folk music though, little to do with Vikings.

This shouldn't stop grozart from playing the tune at that party, though, it's great for dancing in the woods.

I assume you're not looking for metal with harsh vocals, following are all jolly beer-fuelled singalongs: Storm - Nordavind (Norsk traditionals done Metal-style) Otyg - both albums (same vein + fiddle) Vintersorg - first two albums (singer of Otyg solo) Tyr - Ragnarok Bathory - Twilight Of The Gods

heheh, these are great. keep em coming. anyone think of any dance/non-rock stuff? there appears to be a gap in the market for Viking rave.

The closest to "viking rave" I can think of is a trance cover of Windir's "Mørkets Fyrste" by E-HEAD. I recall having heard it and not liking too much, but it's worth a listen at least.
You can find it on the Valfar, ein Windir tribute compilation.

Also there might be some Hedningarna remixes out there. At least one by DJ Anti I think. I don't know what do they sound like, but most Hedningarna tunes are are quite danceable in origin.

I have a ridiculous Eurodance version of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Edvard Gried's Peer Gynt on some compilation. I could email it to you, if you want?

"Edward Grieg"
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:03 (seventeen years ago)
And if you ever play at a Scottish theme party, I think the same compilation also has this great house tune based around a bagpipe loop.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:08 (seventeen years ago)
As for Medieval folky house music, you could also give this a try, though I'm not sure how Vikingy it sounds.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:13 (seventeen years ago)
Haha, Tuomas, that eurodance peer gynt thing might be suitably awful. don't want to post my email up here though.

A couple more tunes which would at least lyrically fir the bill:

I basically played my ILX DJ mix entry and a bunch of other stuff. I got too busy to put together a proper viking mix sadly. Mind you there's always OMD, and the Horn track:
Joe Mull - Stepping / Ice Cube - 100 Dollar Bill Y'all (Acappella) The Monks - Monk Time Ryan Crosson - Hopskotch / Spoon - The Ghost Of You Lingers The Black Ghosts - Face (Switch Remix) Battles - Atlas / OMD - Sailing On The Seven Seas Belleville Rendezvous OST - Cabaret Aspirateur Far Too Loud - Shredder Jonny Harris & Chrysus - Don't Pigeonhole Me Iron & Wine - White Tooth Man Skream! - Dutch Flowerz Active Sight - The Search For Freedom Tim Taylor - The Horn Track (Luke Slater Mix) Sote - Electric Deaf / Perez 'Prez' Prado - Guaglione

That viking dude is called Rufus. He danced all the way through, even to the Belleville Rendezvous bit which had the chavvy contingent totally flumoxed.
