Oooh. Two Bassists enter, One Bassist leaves: Claypool vs Collins in a Thunderdom Battle to the Death. Classic or Dud, Search and Destroy, Faster Pussycat KILL KILL KILL!

Lord Custos II, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh.....and Lemmy. No one STRUMS a Rickenbacker bass like the man himself.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmmm. We Should keep this up until we run out of instruments. (Yeah. We should stop at Zithers and Xylophones.)

Lord Custos II, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rick Finch. You know Bernard Edwards? Well, he was OK but really a fussy, baroque version of Rick Finch. "Get Down Tonight" is the deadliest bass part ever recorded.

dave q, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Michael 'muthafuckin' Henderson!

Paul, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Steve Albini on Pegboy's Fore EP.

Simon Gallup.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anyone see the SNL skit with Jack Black and Will Ferrell as the dueling bassists.

Chris, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mike Watt

Dave225, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PETER HOOK! Damn. I'm avoiding these threads like the plague (because, y'know, lists & me, ehh), but, damn, take LONGER to mention him, why don't you.

Daver, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am my favorite bass player.

chaki, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm sticking with the Hodges family (Teenie on guitar, Charles on organ): Leroy was a great bassist at Hi in the early '70s. I'm also extremely keen on Tina Weymouth and Donald 'Duck' Dunn (of Booker T & the MGS). Jon Entwistle is undervalued.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

william parker on 'harras' is lovely.

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Barry Adamson (Magazine), Percy Jones, Mick Karn (Japan), Steve Kilby (The Church), Zak Sally (Low), Eli Janney/Johnny Temple (Girls Agianst Boys, whichever is the the better one)

A Nairn, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The bass player is the loser of the band.

Anyway, as a bassist myself, I vote for Cris Kirkwood. Too bad about him, tho.

J, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Richard Davis!

Jordan, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i love everything about josephine wiggs

Ron, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hooky, and Chris Squire, who invented Mogwai bass chords. Geezer Butler, anyone who uses a Rickenbacker by default, I guess.

Damian, Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I sit here in shock, not one of you have yet to mention the the worlds greatest bass player. He wrote the book. No one player has done what this man has done on the bass. This man pushed the limit, and since him,for that matter, no one before him even comes close to his genius. He is the Hendrix of bass, the one the only, the greatest bass player to ever grace this, or any other planet.... If god came down as a bass player,he would come down as.................................................JACO PASTORIUS..... Can I get an AMEN.......JACO PASTORIUS. is the greatest of all..... And guess what ? If you don't agree then you do not know SH*T about bass players!!!

James H., Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

WOW! I lost it for a minute.I hope I didn't offend anyone with my Jaco Pastorius outburst.I do believe he is the finest bass player, ever!

James H., Wednesday, 24 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jaco is ok.

chaki, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rob Wright of nomeansno, or, yeh, ok, Mike Watt

bob snoom, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hook, Adamson, Edwards, Entwhistle - yes, of course.

A couple of others :

1) Jane Munro (Au Pairs) - punkfunk goddess with a great sound midway between Burnel and Motown.

2)I really like that slightly muffled and picked sound that Carol Kaye uses. You know, like on Pet Sounds. Chris White of the Zombies was the master of this style - have a listen to the track I reviewed on 102 Beats That.

3) Robbie Shakespeare.

4)Whichever Scroggins plays bass in ESG.

Dr. C, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stomu Takeishi.

The inability to get over Jaco Pastorius is why bass players will always be thought of as geeks.

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I cannot quite believe no-one's mentioned one S. Hanley, late of The Fall.

RickyT, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

emma smith.

di, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm even more shocked that no one has mentioned Holger Czukay.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Richard Bona

Paul, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kira Roessler of old school Black Flag

Julian, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Holger Czukay plays better dictaphone than bass. Love 'em to death, tho.

J, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Charles Mingus. Oh yeah...

Ms. Snit, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam and Flea from the Chilli Peppers aren't too shoddy

Rick, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Flea isn't shoddy, just unlistenable

dave q, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have to second Rob Wright.

and charlie haden

dan, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jah Wobble said a good bass player should be like Franz Beckenbauer i.e, solid at the back but with the occasional burst upfield. I like Dee Dee Ramone even though he was a more like Carlton Palmer than The Kaiser.

JohnnyDexter, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nineteen years pass...

Man, Guy Pratt. I didn't know he'd been making these, but this fun:

I love that bassists Joe Bouchard (ex-Blue Oyster Cult) and Dennis Dunaway (ex-Alice Cooper) have a band called...wait for it...Blue Coupe.
