They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul - C/D ?

I remember hearing this as a nine year old. It was probably the first rock song I liked that I got into by myself (as opposed to a dance track or something my parents might have played). I say classic. I still remember all the words from memorising them out of Smash Hits.

Anyone not like it?

I like it. I remember hearing it a couple years ago after not having heard it in a long long time and being shocked at how sinister it was.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

ITS VERY GOOD BUT ANNA NG IS BETER

ITS VERY GOOD BUT ANNA NG IS BETER

Quite OTM, though I love both. I'm an unabashed TMBG fan and I don't care who points and laffs.

I'm also not sure what is sinister abt Birdhouse. It's about a nightlight, singing a song about how he's helpful, like his big brother the lighthouse!

Trayce, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

It is TWEE AS FUKK

Trayce, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

Classic, along with countless others in the TMBG catalogue. And my oldest boy (4) instantly recognizes them and claims their music as his own.

Lincoln was so much better than Flood.

Im your only friend
Im not your only friend
But Im a little glowing friend
But really Im not actually your friend
But I am

Trayce, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 01:25 (seventeen years ago)

Which kinda reminds me of Dr Worm's lyrics now I think about it:

They call me Dr Worm
Good morning how are you, I'm Dr Worm
I'm interested in things
I'm not a real doctor
But I am a real worm
I am an actual worm

Trayce, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

Don't call me at work again no no the boss still hates me
I'm just tired and I don't love you anymore
And there's a restaurant we should check out where
The other nightmare people like to go
I mean nice people, baby wait,
I didn't mean to say nightmare

"Ana Ng" shits on this from an unquantifiable height.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

One of the greatest songs of all time. Fuck "Ana Ng."

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 03:15 (seventeen years ago)

Birdhouse has a definite edge on Ana Ng, but both are completely awesome so whatever...

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

"she's an angel" is better than either of these, tho i like both.

J.D., Wednesday, 10 October 2007 06:23 (seventeen years ago)

wanko: I love that song! ("They'll need a crane"), I just love how he throws "and I dont love you anymore" in amongst all those excuses like it slipped out subliminally. Such a sad song, yet it sounds so happy.

Trayce, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 06:45 (seventeen years ago)

i loved it when i first heard it. but then i think i decided it obviously wasn't "cool" or something. hmm. i'd really need to hear it again. couldn't have told you it was about a nightlight; reading the lyrics just there, it does come across as a little sinister to me, yes.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 06:55 (seventeen years ago)

"Birdhouse..." was the song which effectively got me into pop music, one of my favourite songs ever.

zeus, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 09:49 (seventeen years ago)

sinister? why?

"I'd be fired if that was my job, after killing Jason off and countless screaming Argonauts."

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 09:58 (seventeen years ago)

aw, but that's him saying he wouldn't make a very good lighthouse, isn't it?

stevie, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 10:21 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, cause hes only a nightlight, so he wouldnt do his job!

Trayce, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

Bouncy. Classic.

I've never really considered the lyrics much beyond the chorus until now.

onimo, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 11:01 (seventeen years ago)

"Ana Ng" lovers otm, but that doesn't mean "Birdhouse in your Soul" isn't pretty damn classic too.

mh, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

Birdhouse In Your Soul is fucking awful.

Alba, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

(Ana Ng is great though)

Alba, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

Both "Birdhouse" and "Ana Ng" are sweet and FABULOUSLY arranged recordings. Thumbs up all around, TMBG were best when they were doing love songs that mix the desperately sad and the tear-jerkingly joyous(see also "She's An Angel," "Nightgown of the Sullen Moon").

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

it's a well constructed little pop tune. nice chord changes, melody, arrangement isn't so bad...

but the guy's voice and lyrics are annoying as fuck.

max r, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:36 (seventeen years ago)

I like the way that it's a simple message and they left out all the whistles and bells.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

if you want an example of someone who flouts the that/which rule all the time, download and listen to Kate Adie introduce From Our Own Correspondent each week on Radio 4. I know most people don't even know the rule, but they must instinctively have a bit of an ear for it, because Adie sticks out so much. You should listen to it anyway - it's good!

Alba, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

ha - totally wrong thread.

They'll Need A Crane is best of all, for the lines quote by ... wanky above.
