ciderpress, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha...i loved this album when i was 14, peaches is my fave i reckon.

max r, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

yeah this was the first album i ever owned, i got it when i was 10(?) years old after i got a stereo for my birthday

ciderpress, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

just good old fashioned fun

max r, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

We're not
gonna may-yee-ay-yik it

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

The followup is underrated too.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

I also voted for we're not going to make it, although I am suprisingly nostalgic about the whole thing (doms opening with the kittykittykittykittykittytouchit struck a happy place i think)

John Justen, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

i never liked the followup much except for "volcano" which is possibly better than anything on the debut

ciderpress, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

The followup is underrated too.

You just made me want to play it for the first time in years. I've always really liked 'Tube Amplifier': "I got myself a brand new cymbal supplier, they're really great, they're Sabian!" ;o)

MacDara, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

Now that I've looked at the CD case, it's actually 'Toob Amplifier'. Well, it has been a few years...

I also see that Matt Bayles was an assistant engineer on the record. Bit of a leap from this to Botch, Isis, Burnt By The Sun et al.

MacDara, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

Oh please -- who on earth could give the slightest fuck?

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

"Volcano" is the highlight, sure, but "Mach 5" and "Tiki God" are solid. I once saw a muppet cover band that for some reason opened and closed the set with that "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen..." thing and that was pretty great too.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 12 October 2007 01:44 (seventeen years ago)

kitty on my foot and I wanna touch it

milo z, Friday, 12 October 2007 01:53 (seventeen years ago)

I still have this in a binder somewhere. For some reason throwing away all of my CD cases in favor of binders seemed like a brilliant idea in junior high.

milo z, Friday, 12 October 2007 01:53 (seventeen years ago)

"Lump" >>>>>>> the Foo Fighters

milo z, Friday, 12 October 2007 01:59 (seventeen years ago)

Oh please -- who on earth could give the slightest fuck?

Was that referring to me? I just think it's interesting to see where a particular engineer/producer known for a particular sound or for working with bands of a certain ilk cut their teeth in other styles or genres. Like Les Claypool producing Yngwie. If something as innocuous as that makes you go off on one, well... I don't have anything to say to that.

MacDara, Friday, 12 October 2007 08:20 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I was going to vote for "We're Not Gonna Make It" because I thought no one else would, but since several others mentioned it I will concede that "Lump" is the one that truly runs through my head all the time.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

"Peaches", although "Mach 5" is better.

snoball, Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Friday, 19 October 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Is 'We're Not Gonna Make It' some indienerd take on Twister Sister?

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 20 October 2007 01:14 (seventeen years ago)

No.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 20 October 2007 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

I missed this one. Would have voted for either Roosevelt or Kennedy though ;)

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 21 October 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

I think Alex's who-gives-a-fuck was referring to the Presidents, MacDara. It wasn't directed at you personally.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Sunday, 21 October 2007 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

That's what I was thinking after I commented. Shame there's no edit button, but there isn't one for real life either, so...

MacDara, Sunday, 21 October 2007 07:14 (seventeen years ago)

Always fun to revisit this album after a lengthy break.

frogbs, Thursday, 6 February 2014 21:02 (eleven years ago)

This is a great album, I remember playing Earthworm Jim and listening to this over and over again.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 7 February 2014 01:08 (eleven years ago)

I take my kid to see Caspar Babypants every chance I get but have never heard this band. Probably heard peaches at one point but couldn't tell you what it sounds like. The lyrics quoted above read a lot like Caspar lyrics though.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 7 February 2014 05:57 (eleven years ago)

so, they just did a knew one???

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 February 2014 16:12 (eleven years ago)

"Lump" >>>>>>> the Foo Fighters

I saw Ween and the Foo Fighters open for Presidents of the USA in Feb. 1996. That Dave Grohl has come a long way.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 20 February 2014 10:26 (eleven years ago)

I used to play the fuck out of this album when I was 14. I heard Lump before anyone else I knew and was kind of proud when POTUSA got big.

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Thursday, 20 February 2014 10:29 (eleven years ago)

it really is incredible all the way up to "Kick Out the Jams"

frogbs, Thursday, 20 February 2014 15:21 (eleven years ago)

two months pass...

my daughter, who is studying social-studies now, just told me that some us presidents were not lawyers? this is outrageous.

eleven years pass...

So this was interesting (and indirectly may have been the only good thing Lefsetz has ever done in giving Dederer a platform to talk about it). John Strohm's intro may not seem related but the connection becomes clearer as it goes.

two weeks pass...

I'm surprised they still get those kinds of numbers on streaming, been a minute since I've heard either of their hits

still have a vivid memory of biking to the store and getting this CD used for $5, blasting it from my boom box with the windows open, only for my mom to come home right when the "fuck you kitty" part started. she took the CD away from me. when I finally got it back I was amused and kinda irritated that that was actually the only swear word on the CD

ivy., Friday, 13 June 2025 14:05 (three months ago)

my band is v much considering covering "we are not going to make it"

ivy., Friday, 13 June 2025 14:05 (three months ago)

leaving in that botched intro is the funniest part of the record

frogbs, Friday, 13 June 2025 14:07 (three months ago)

I enjoyed this band's hits until they inevitably got overplayed, but I never checked out their albums. Maybe I'll check them out thanks to this revive.

In 95/96, I was a dishwasher, and one of the waitresses would sometimes come back to my station with a full bus tub singing, "Millions of dishes...dishes for Doug." That is the peak of my POTUSA memories.

peace, man, Friday, 13 June 2025 14:48 (three months ago)

I appreciate that the main PotUSA pivoted to recording (not terrible, as such things go) children's music under the name Caspar Babypants. Also authored a few pre-K books.

jon_oh, Friday, 13 June 2025 14:58 (three months ago)

Makes more sense than the guy from The Verve Pipe recording children's music under The Verve Pipe.

MarkoP, Friday, 13 June 2025 15:05 (three months ago)

first album is definitely worth a listen, it's pretty tight and fun. falls apart a bit in the end but you kind of expect albums like this to. the ones after that are less good but they all have some worthy tunes.

frogbs, Friday, 13 June 2025 15:14 (three months ago)

nobody taught them how!

ciderpress, Friday, 13 June 2025 16:03 (three months ago)

oh wow I had no idea Chris Ballew put out 8 solo albums in the last five years
