TS: José González's "Against Our Nature" vs. PJ Harvey's "White Chalk"

both are downbeat, borderline goth (in the best sense of the word, like being locked in an armoire with a morbid yet entertaining escapee from edward goreyland). minimalist, insular little headtrips. maybe ripples of freakfolk in the gene pool?

gonzalez takes it in a walk, but he also has the luxury of not having a listener (this one at least) try to contextualize his movements within an extensive body of work. harvey as per the usual retains the right of car crash appeal.

dur, "in our nature". nevermind.

Harvey, TKO.

sometimes harvey's navel-gazing infantilism gets on my nerves. probably cause I'm old.

both have a nice autumnal undertow, though.

Edward III, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:45 (seventeen years ago)

they both win, inasmuch as i will probably never listen to either record

unless harvey has magically and against all odds made a record like "stories from the city.." and gonzales has written a tune of his own that isn't completely unmemorable

electricsound, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:48 (seventeen years ago)

actually i meant gonzalez, gonzales has plenty of jolly good tunes

electricsound, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

harvey's is unlike anything she's ever done, and for that reason alone is worth hearing at least once.

haven't heard anything else from gonzalez so I can't speak to his improvements or lack thereof in the memorable tune dept.

welp his previous album had that cover from the tv ad and a whole lot of monochrome "moody" singer-songwriter drone

electricsound, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:59 (seventeen years ago)

monochrome "moody" drone = classic

singer-songwriter = dud

gonzalez seems to be more in the former camp than the latter. he's not in any danger of getting confused with phil ochs.

and now, gis results for singer-songwriter:

o gis you are so wise. monochrome moody drone definitely better than singer-songwriter.

Edward III, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

cant argue with that
