What are some good examples of this? It's fun sometimes, don't you think?

"Never mind the bollocks..."

The Who did it like five times, my favorite being "Who's Missing" (but why did they call the next tone "Two's Missing"? Makes no fucking sense).

Happens in jazz ALL the time, like with the 60's Miles stuff (Miles Smiles, Miles in the Sky, etc.), although that might be a little different than what you're thinking of.

My favorite hands-down example of this is the Latin declension joke of Mingus Ah Um.

Yes it's alright, but I hate those self-conscious album titles about the band's career, such as Listen Without Prejudice, Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can't We, She's So Unusual and so on.

We're Only In It for the Money, Versus the Mothers of Prevention ...

The Animals and the Kinks had a lot of 'em. "Animal Tracks", "Animalism", "Kinda Kinks", "The Kink Kontroversy", blahdeblah.

Predictably, I'll pick "Back In Denim" and "Denim On Ice."

The entire Greg Kihn catalogue, and a great deal of Can's.

I hate those self-conscious album titles about the band's career, such as ...

yes. but I tend to like when the content is self-referential, and what i'm really thinking about is In Utero, which i took to be very reactionary to their sudden ultra-fame

There's a Whole Lalo Schifrin Goin' On

Graham C, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nillson Shmillson

The Birds the Bees and the Monkees

Dave225, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Predictably, I'll pick "How To Know The Butterflies Of Lurve"

Oh, and Beserkley recording artists seem quite fond of this. Ones that spring to mind are Jonathan Richman's "Surrender To Jonathan" and Greg Kihn's unbelievable bunch of albums that include "Kihnspiracy", "Kihntagious" and, I think, "Kihntinued".

emil.y, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bugger. Someone beat me to Greg Kihn. I'm terribly sorry.

emil.y, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I do like "Everybody Wants To Shag The Teardrop Explodes".

N., Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, that's fantastic. I've just remembered "Drop Out With The Barracudas" and "Viva La Dusseldorf" as well (no doubt someone's already said these, too. Rah).

emil.y, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And how could I forget "The Genius Of Komeda"?! And "Solex Vs The Hitmeister, too.

emil.y, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you're going to list the Greg Kihn records, goodgawd man! at LEAST mention "Next of Kihn" - that was the only pun that wasn't totally stupid.

Dave225, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Godz 'Godzundheit' (that Lalo Schifrin one is unbeatable).

Gilgamesh, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A slightly different but related phenomenon is band names that reference the name of the band leader. This is also common in jazz. Witness: "Hot P'stromi" (Yale Strom) or "Barondown" (Joey Baron)

o. nate, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Pet Shop Boys, Please"; "Pet Shop Boys, Actually"; "Pet Shop Boys Release" (they're still at it)

Tom, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That Compact Disc by Oceanic.

John Mc, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
