The Sun And The Rain, or: Amazing singles that didn't make it onto albums

This question is inspired by my recent purchase of the Madness box set, 'The Lot.'

I was struck by just how many of Madness's greatest songs didn't appear on their albums:

It Must Be Love

Driving In My Car

House Of Fun

The Sun And The Rain

Wings Of A Dove

(Waiting For) The Ghost Train

I know they were the archetypal singles band, but, when did it become unfashionable to leave hit singles off of albums? Aand, what are your favorite hits left off albums?

(ps you all must buy the Madness box set. It includes all 24 Madness videos in Quicktime format, and one day I'll write an essay about how the videos of Madness are my generation's Looney Tunes.)

"Acquisce" and "The Masterplan" by Oasis are obvious ones (although bands nowadays always make up for that with a lousy B-sides compilation after having released an album or 2). And just think of every great single that The Smiths and The Beatles ("Strawberry Fields" b/w "Penny Lane" being the best example)left off their regular albums! Last but not least: "Pet Sounds" would have been even better if Brian Wilson had finished "Good Vibrations" in time...

I get to be first with the painfully obvious answers - Atmosphere, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Blue Monday, Tour De France.

Yeah but "Good Vibrations" is on an album.

"Legal Man", from a recent viewpoint. I think not putting it on an album was Stuart Murdoch being willfully "clever". Yet he found room for "Beyond the bliddy Sunrise" on FYHC...

Bbbbut Legal Man is rub!

Leaving aside some of the 'obvious' Smiths/New Order/Cocteaus/Jam 80s choices and bringing it slightly more up to date ...though I feel I should mention "A Celebration" by U2 circa 82 and "Lions In My Own Garden" by Prefab Sprout... how about "Stay Together" (or STIIIIIIY TURGEEEVAAAAH" or however we should spell it), "Popscene", and my own favourite eg: "Weekender" by the late would-have-been-great Flowered Up.

Another one I just thought of: Fool's Gold.
