...or Elvis Costello

Is this a condemnation of recording since the last time someone did? If it's not it should be, at least w/r/t the Pretenders and Joe Jackson.

The editors of Uncut and Mojo.

and I'm going to take this as an endorsement of (as-yet-unheard-by-me) Graham Parker. Thanks Dave!

oye, you leave joe jackson out of this.

but yeah, uncut gave them a cover and a 16 pager from memory....from meory, it was also the last time they put a woman on the voer, though that might go to shelby lyne

The Pretenders are great! The other two, though, not quite so...

When they performed such an insightful meaningful deep penetrating post-modern ironical satirical Rory Bremner style act as getting someone who sort of looked a bit like Britney Spears if you squint in their video for whatever that single they had two years back.

And leave Joe Jackson out of this.

dickon edwards and timothy mark chipping (see the inside sleeve of 'passive soul'.

Are you folks seriously taking a pro-Joe Jackson stance? And I thought smokin' crack was passe.

Lee G, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't understand the question. At their best, the Pretenders were untouchable. 'Kid', 'Brass in pocket', '2000 miles' 'Don't Get Me Wrong'. Ach.

The first Pretenders LP used to be one of my favorite records. Granted, I don't play it much anymore. Still like it, though.

if it's the joe jackson of real men/is she really going out with him/different for girls etc yes we are.

Joe Jackson vs Pretenders FITE!

Queen G, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, never thought too entirely much of Graham Parker, but the first album by the Pretenders is fuckin' fantastic, and Joe Jackson's first couple of albums are great too, dammit.

Chorus guitars... God, I don't miss those.

Andy, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like pretenders, esp first record

Ron, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The first album is classic, everything that followed is a MASSIVE FUCKING DUD. Chrissie Hynde is now like an embarassing aunt who gets drunk at parties and tries to flash all the 18 year olds to show she's still "with it".
