Don't download. Buy Second Hand Sounds. And while you're at it, also Bodily Functions. He has really strict theories about making (his) music. Check out his site for more info. "Leave me now" is one of the most beautiful songs ever made. sometimes labeled Jazz House.

Actually, according to an NYLPM link from Tom, there is something Herbert very much wants you all to download here.

also know as dr rokit - the indoor fireworks album is very nice, and radio boy ( more experimental stuff), bodily functions by herbert is great as is his mix album - mistakes (on tresor i think)

buy the classic Around The House
it would be classic even if it only contained 3 tracks: "Going Round", "Around The House" and "So Now"!

the new Cinematic Orchestra 12" has two nice Matthew Herbert mixes (a Herbert one and a Dr Rockit one)

I'd say Bodily Functions is the best start, as a kind of fully realized piece of Herbertism: the beats, the songwriting, the arranging. The Secondhand Sounds remix comp is beyond great, too, and Let's All Make Mistakes is one of the most alive DJ mixes ever done.

Apparently his next record is going to be a big-band album.

various monikered recordings are nice, but if you ever get chance, see him dj as wishmountain. 2 turntables and a microphone, and a toaster, and some bread, and some butter, and some other stuff. it glitch like crazeee...

If you're already into house then I record Secondhand Sounds is the best place to start, as it contains elements of everything that makes him good - the fragile dub house of Aroung The House, the faltering machinery house of Let's All Make Mistakes, the glitch torch songs of Bodily Functions, and loads more stylistic twists and turns besides. Plus it has what is perhaps his most stunning piece of music ever - his remix of Motorbass's "Ezio" from '96, which might just be the first example of official microhouse ever made. From there you can decide which sort of Herbert-incarnation you want to move towards.

Of course, it is a collection of dance remixes so if you want something less consistently propulsive, then yeah, Bodily Functions.

three years pass...
Has anyone heard this? Supposedly a collaboration between Herbert and Mouse on Mars. I'm somewhat suprised I've not heard about till yesterday when looking around on discogs.com
