ok so i was listening to this naff program on radio 1 theo ther week, and it turned out to be me old mate gilles p talking about 'brazialina beats' - stuffed full of cliches (dj marky, far out recs blah blah blah oh look theyre great mates of mine etc), when they came to a section about 'funk'. this wasnt like any 'funk' i know, but instead full wikked block party elektro bizness with loads of old skool rapping on in portuguese, which totally blew me away. so, anyone know anything about this? is it possible to get any of this shiot in the uk, whatever format? the producers that they interviewed said that no one could affiord to press up any vinyl in brazil, so i guess it cant get it on 12" hohoho...but any more information forthcoming?

Yes! Well I dont know whether any of it is available but there's stuff kicking around on the file-sharing networks - DJ Marlboro "Super Popozao" is a total killer track. A couple of other names too but I dont have the tracks to hand, I'll have a look when I'm next on. The lyrics - and dances - are apparently v.violent, there was a minor media panic over "Face Slap" last year.

The Black Rio: Brazil Soul Power comp on Strut records is freakin' excellent. I think Strut is a UK label, so look around; should find it pretty easily.

Funk brasileiro is well nasty and makes UK Garage look like bossa lounge. It got a mention a couple of weeks ago, but I'm not the best at searching this site, so I can't link you in. Chupa Cabras cade voce? The Face had a piece a few years ago on the Baile Funk phenomenon, in which they have organised moshing competitions to funk, which have been known to lead to mutilation and even death! I don't know how available this music is, I'm afraid.

theres loads of sites with loads of mp3s, the best thing is go to audiogalaxy and search montagem, popozao. the furacao 2000 comps has the most commercial side of it but the bad-ass stuff u find on the net or the proibidao cds that r sold in the street you´ll have to get it on mp3. People always think is not "real music". Check this thread

There was also a Freaky Trigger article on one of the tracks last year, comparing it to Orange Juice.
