One time, I put on the album, but for some reason it seemed wrong. I was about to drop it for something else, until I found I'd accidentally put side three on first. So, I changed it for side one, and all was well!

Mark G, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

hahah this is great. but in seriousness, I think I remember liking side B the best. though I really doubt I'd be able to tell you what side was playing if you put one on randomly.

Mark Clemente, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

(I think there's one obvious answer in all seriousness but I won't give anything away yet, especially since someone else will point it out any moment.)

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

"D" b/c of locked groove.

Mark Rich@rdson, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

You were right, Mackro!

(Unless you have the 80's reissue, or the CD)

Mark G, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

I always got the most out of side C but couldn't explain why. I haven't actually listened in years though. (Loved it for a while.)

Sundar, Friday, 2 November 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

(The locked groove is cool too.)

Sundar, Friday, 2 November 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

Best Side of Metal Machine Music

jim, Friday, 2 November 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

anyone who's actually listened to this record all the way through usually agrees on which side is best

Milton Parker, Friday, 2 November 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

I've listened to it all the way through, and it's all good.

Not as good as cutting fluid being poured onto engine crankshafts on CNC lathes (which I used to listen to 8 hours a day), but close.

I voted "A" for the hell of it.

PhilK, Friday, 2 November 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

D. That locked groove rocks.

snoball, Friday, 2 November 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

haha I didn't remember I'd posted almost the exact same thing on the other thread.

Sundar, Friday, 2 November 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

Oops. Didn't realize there was another poll thread.

Then again, call me a wuss, but I don't know if I can wait until December 2020 to find out the results of that poll.

I want to know what the Golden Moment is

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 2 November 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

I love the interview with LB in "Psychotic Reactions" where Lou bullshits about really sophisticated subharmonics drawn from Bach "hidden DEEP in the music, but you've really got to know what you're listening for."

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 2 November 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

no the best part of MMM is the a-head liner notes -- "my week beats your year" zoom

m coleman, Saturday, 3 November 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

speed kills

m coleman, Saturday, 3 November 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still voting 2.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 3 November 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

That locked groove is cool indeed, but I'm voting for Side C because it's the most danceable. The frequent dub-echo bits give it a functionable pulse, if not exactly rhythm.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Sunday, 4 November 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

side 3 has the most artistic integrity, authenticity and standards of musicianship... and more than that, it's got the best grasp of complex melodic structures. It's for real, he means it and it has the best tunes.

side 1 is the one with the best rhythmic structures though.

side 2 is between side 1 and side 3 - in more ways than one.

but side 4 is shit, I think all you side 4ists are mental. The locked groove was an atrocity, it said nothing to me about my life.

Sandy Blair, Sunday, 4 November 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

side three has the ballad, if I remember correctly. But you have to know what you're listening for.

smurfherder, Sunday, 4 November 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

If you feed side 2 into a dvd player (ntsc), you'll see a picture of Lou eating a giro sandwich.

It's as NY as it gets!

Mark G, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

side C has a neat moment where it coalesces into something resembling irish stepdancing music for a few seconds so i'll go with that

ciderpress, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

voted for side 4. cause after side 4, it's over. and that's a good thing.

stephen, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

which side was the extract on the lou reed mid 90s box set from?

pisces, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

First bit of side one.

Mark G, Monday, 5 November 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

Incidentally, my computer REALLY hates that record - kept freezing during Side 4, as if to say "Are you serious?" And the earlier mastered-from-vinyl '90s edition wouldn't play at all! (A problem i never had with the vinyl.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 5 November 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

You can play vinyl on your computer?

Mark G, Monday, 5 November 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

You can play vinyl on your computer?

Never tried; therefore, I never had any problem!

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

That's messed up. I knew the commercial "sell out" side (one) wouldn't place too high, but to give it to side 4???? Oh man! You people have your priorities all wrong!

smurfherder, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

Funny how the "tuesday" side came last.

Mark G, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 09:24 (eighteen years ago)

Probably everyone's sick to death of it after 30+ years. (That's the side that classic-rock radio played to death.)
