Geir Hongro, Saturday, 3 November 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

Voted "I Spy", although there is a very close contender: Would have gone for "Disco 2000" had it been the slightly superior single mix.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 3 November 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

Jeezus if "Something Changed" doesn't walk this there is something wrong with you people OH WAIT

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 3 November 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

um its common people duhhh

ciderpress, Saturday, 3 November 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

"Something Changed" is also a strong contender, as is "Underwear". Several great songs on that album.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 3 November 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

lol pulp

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 3 November 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

sex is a cabaret, old chum

da croupier, Saturday, 3 November 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

"I Spy", of course. Their weakest late-period album by a street.

Just got offed, Saturday, 3 November 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

disco 2000

andi, Saturday, 3 November 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

My choice is very E's-y to work out.

the next grozart, Saturday, 3 November 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

uh, disco 2000. so good!

t0dd swiss, Saturday, 3 November 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

underwear

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 3 November 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it's "I Spy", with "F.E.E.L.I.N.G..." a close second.

DavidM, Saturday, 3 November 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

This was tough, but I think I "sorted" out my choice in the end.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Saturday, 3 November 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Cheeky hints about what song you're voting for A.R.E.M.A.D.G.A.Y.

Alex in Baltimore, Saturday, 3 November 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

Their weakest late-period album by a street.

THANK YOU

i think out of their four "acclaimed" albums, this is their weakest by far -- i much prefer we love life, his n hers, this is hardcore (and in no set order of preference) but i *know* different class is 4th place. always.

good album, but overrated.

Bob Six, Saturday, 3 November 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

Out of their "acclaimed" albums, his n hers is way above the others for me.

Bob Six, Sunday, 4 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Great thing about Pulp, which I'll never tire of saying: if you compile all of their (later-period) songs that break the 5:30 length barrier (except Sylvia), you have a) an awesome mixtape and b) a genuine best-of.

1) The Fear
2) Common People
3) I Spy
4) This Is Hardcore
5) My Legendary Girlfriend
6) She's A Lady
7) SEDUCTIVE FUCKING BARRY (most reviews think this song is about Barry White; I'm convinced it's actually about Barry Adamson, which would make it even fucking cooler)
8) WICKERMAN
9) I Love Life
10) F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.
11/12) David's Last Summer
11/12) Sunrise

Can't actually decide which of those two perfect closers deserves to finish off the record. Apart from that minor difficulty, FOR THE FUCKING WIN. The only shorter-than-5:30 tracks I actually think are as good as these are Lipgloss and Dishes. When they went long-form, they blossomed.

Just got offed, Sunday, 4 November 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

Personally I think "This Is Hardcore" is the weaker out of those four last ones. That's not to say it's a bad album, but it could have done being shortened a bit. "We Love Life" is obviously underrated while "His'n'hers" is probably my favourite Pulp album. I still love "Different Class" too, though, and it's obviously easily their most well-known.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 4 November 2007 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

ugh

i will never ever listen to this album again

electricsound, Sunday, 4 November 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

underwear is probably the only song on this that doesn't piss me off

electricsound, Sunday, 4 November 2007 04:26 (eighteen years ago)

lol dom

lol @, not with

fandango, Sunday, 4 November 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

Live Bed Show - Something Changed

that's such a great one-two-punch there

I sort of agree that easily half this record (at least) is not great tho' but it's obvious why, and that they HAD to make this one eventually, but it was once and never again, not really worth holding a grudge over.

fandango, Sunday, 4 November 2007 09:40 (eighteen years ago)

I agree with Geir about the single mix of "Disco 2000" being superior to the album version, so I'll pick "Something Changed" instead. "I Spy" finishes a close second. "Bar Italia" and "Monday Morning" are a bit embarrassing these days. I never really liked "Live Bed Show", either. "If beds could talk, they'd tell stories", said Jarvis ... no, we buy the albums to hear *you* tell stories.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 4 November 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

so, really, you're not all voting for "common people?"

iconoclasts.

i am. single of the 1990s.

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 4 November 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

Underwear ftw

onimo, Sunday, 4 November 2007 11:04 (eighteen years ago)

so, really, you're not all voting for "common people?"

The lurkers will all go for either that one or "Disco 2000" so it's a good thing there are some of us voting for other tracks. :)

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 4 November 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

Geir is actually kinda OTM; we've seen this all before.

Just got offed, Sunday, 4 November 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

so it's a good thing there are some of us voting for other tracks

hmm: but everything else on there is dwarfed by CP!

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 4 November 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

Obviously, no. CP has great lyrics, but the melody isn't by any means among their strongest. A three-chord song will always have certain limitations.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 4 November 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

i really don't think that does. it's almost perfect. sure, a lot of that is to do with time and place and so on, but even then ... i hear it now and i still get chills.

you should -- if you haven't already -- check out the live version at the end of the peel sessions CD. took me a minute to realise what it actually was -- quite awesome.

ILX 2You have already voted in this poll and cannot vote again.

ah bug.

Mark G, Monday, 5 November 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

I agree with Geir about the single mix of "Disco 2000" being superior to the album version

no other track is better than "Underwear" so that is my vote.

Bee OK, Monday, 5 November 2007 03:43 (eighteen years ago)

really tough, but am i the only one voting for mis-shapes? i don't know whether my vote was totally legitimate or a pity vote.

shanissey, Monday, 5 November 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

Common People. I should really listen to this again though - I've had it since I was 12 and it's always going to be close to my heart. Hasn't had an outing in ages.

Chris in Belfast, Monday, 5 November 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

I like all the odd ones (i.e. 1, 3, 5...). Disco 2000! gets my vote though.

daavid, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 03:32 (eighteen years ago)

really tough, but am i the only one voting for mis-shapes? i don't know whether my vote was totally legitimate or a pity vote.

Nope. Pseudo-James Bond soundtrack as recorded by London Calling / Sandinista-era Clash. What could be cooler?

JN$OT, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Just got offed, Monday, 12 November 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

Let's just ignore the lurkers' votes (it's probably the only track they've heard) and instead celebrate how people are able to discover what a great album track "I Spy" is. :)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 12 November 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

Fwiw, I know this album very well, love every track (including "I Spy"), and think it's far and away their very album. And I voted for "Common People," probably the greatest song about class ever written, three chords/(supposedly)deficient melody and all.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 12 November 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

Those three chords are the main reason why I don't rate it very highly. The lyrics are surely great.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 12 November 2007 08:59 (eighteen years ago)

(I) think it's far and away their very album.

It's also their very BEST album.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 12 November 2007 09:08 (eighteen years ago)

The lyrics are surely great.

Mark G, Monday, 12 November 2007 09:32 (eighteen years ago)

The lyrics are surely great.

this thread really has gone places.

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 November 2007 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

No, sure I am able to see the value in a great lyric, but I don't devalue a great melody just because the lyrics suck. Melody will always be more important than lyrics to me.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 12 November 2007 11:03 (eighteen years ago)

I don't devalue a great melody just because the lyrics suck

fair enough, but quite often you do the opposite.

Mark G, Monday, 12 November 2007 11:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, a good lyric in itself isn't enough to make anything but the lyrics good. Musically, a great lyric doesn't help much as it isn't really part of the music. But it's still a great lyric.

Lots of great rap lyrics, for instance. At least outside the gangsta rap tradition.
