i don't even know if 'rhyme' is the word you're looking for here?

perhaps, you just mean to say performers with names that are practically the same

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

Joe Beck/Jeff Beck

My copy of "London Calling" has "Guns of Brixton" as written by Paul Simon!

Mark G, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

Sandy Denny / Sandy Dennis

... I know the latter is an actress but they still get melded together in my head

Tom D., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Shakin' Surfin Stevens!

Mark G, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

Bill Evans.

dad a, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

Both of whom played with Miles, to add to the confusion.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Tim Buckley / Timbuk 3

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

Paul Simon / Paul Simonon

There goes Rhyminon' Simonon!

dad a, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

A couple more namesakes:

James Taylor / James Taylor

Dave Matthews / Dave Matthews

(I took me a while to realize that the Dave Matthews of the endless ILX thread isn't the one I thought he is; at first I was like, "Why does a jazz arranger provoke so much hate?".)

Tuomas, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

Norman Blake / Norman Blake

Tom D., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

i don't even know if 'rhyme' is the word you're looking for here?
perhaps, you just mean to say performers with names that are practically the same

Right, right. Stupid thread idea; or decent idea poorly explained at best. I was thinking more of overall sonic similarity, not necessarily precise rhymes. Stuff like this:

Twisted Sister / Mr. Mister
Starsailor / Art Taylor
Bo Diddley / Bob Dylan
Bonnie Raitt / Johnny Ray

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

elvis costello / elton motello

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

the eagles / the beagles

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm trying to think of this in terms of acts who I actually thought were the SAME act for a while, until I realized otherwise. So that would discount, say, Suede/Slade or The Kings/The Kinks or Jon Anderson/John Anderson or Trace Adkins/Rodney Atkins, but would not discount Ricky Van Shelton/Blake Shelton, who I conflated for years before realizing the error of my ways. There are others, I'm sure; maybe they'll come to mind. (Usually a certain proximity to each other genre-wise is necessary for this to happen properly.)

Oh yeah, a great one:

The Orb/Orbital

xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

The two Paul Deans (X-Ray Spex and Loverboy) and two Mick Joneses (Foreigner and the Clash) don't really count, either.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

Nor Prodigy/The Prodigy

xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

But there are a couple famous blues names and jazz names where more than one guy (a decade or two apart maybe) has the same name, and those always confuse me. They're not coming to me right now, though.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

actually it's a trinity - The Orb/William Orbit/Orbital

ledge, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

Both of whom played with Miles, to add to the confusion.

Then add Davis' arranger Gil Evans into the mix and you are screwed.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

Pigbag/Rip, Rig and Panic (and maybe Pigbros?)
Ja Rule/Jah Cure
both Dr. Dre's (NWA and Ed Lover)
both Sean Pauls (dancehall and Youngbloodz)
Suspyre/Susperia (two metal bands whose CDs came in the mail within a couple weeks of each other this summer)

If album covers count, I'd include (from my teen years)

Fragile / Not Fragile

Love Gun / Sex Pistols

xhuxk, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

new models / new model army

(this probably only matters to people from boston)

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

merle travis / merle haggard

(for when i was a young'un, it didn't seem possible there were two different people named merle. really!)

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

actually it's a trinity - The Orb/William Orbit/Orbital

Haha, yes, I remember totally confusing these three in 1994.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

Listening to Orbital's remix of The Orb's "Huge Ever-Growing Pulsating Brain that Rules from the Center of the Ultraworld" didn't help.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

actually it's a trinity - The Orb/William Orbit/Orbital

Whoops. Up until this moment I assumed they were all the same person/artist.

there are a couple famous blues names and jazz names where more than one guy (a decade or two apart maybe) has the same name, and those always confuse me.

Sonny Boy Williamson/Sonny Boy Williamson

There's an obvious double jazz name too...Bill Evans, maybe? But I don't think that's even the best one.

And yeah, John Cale and JJ Cale is a great one.

Deke Leonard/Def Leppard/Led Zeppelin

xhuxk, Monday, 17 December 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

Jichael Mackson / Michael Jackson

Moka, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 07:33 (sixteen years ago)

I disagree with Ian, above, who suggested this was the worst thread in ILX history. It may not be ILX at it's most insightful, but there are some inspired moments. I don't know why it's so funny but I can't stop laughing at Tim Buckley/Timbuk 3.

It is, but they're named after an infamous L.A. drag queen.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 23:48 (sixteen years ago)

Once had a 'conversation' about music that quickly degenerated into such obtuse nonsense that I thought one(or both) of us were going insane. Turned out that the other guy thought I'd cited 'Counting Crows' at the beginning of the discussion, when I had really said 'Cannibal Corpse'

That Dark Angel/Death Angel confusion reminds of 1987/88 when I was in Dr. Disc, visiting with friends who worked there, and this 35-ish metalhead comes in wanting to return this album by (the Canadian) Slaughter... http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/4506/908313170x170mc8.jpg ...which he'd bought by mistake, thinking it was Slayer.
