I have to go with Teddy P.

Chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isaac Hayes.

Lord Custos II, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is a joke, right? Barry White, man. The strings. The strings . The strings and the beat . Yes. Barry.

John Darnielle, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No joke. Teddy P man, teddy p.

Chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How come my italics didn't go off? I did the and everything. This is some evil Pendergrassian trick, I bet.

John Darnielle, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know a lot more Barry White than Teddy Pendergrass. I'm tempted to go with the Isaac Hayes response, though.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

now come on yall..... most of yall wouldnt be here if T.P. didnt tell yo mamma to turn of the lights.

Tha Damn Man, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isaac Hayes!

Lord Custos II, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Somehow I sense a new throwdown along the lines of the Monster Thread...

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yer all deluded. CURTIS MAYFIELD.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Curtis Mayfield, Gil Scott-Heron circa PIECES OF MAN, and Luther Vandross, man!

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'll wash your body...and you'll wash mine

Chris, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isaac...Hayes...

Lord Custos II, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was gonna say Curtis Mayfield, actually. I'm a little conflicted between him and Isaac Hayes, though.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they're ALL great!
why don't you just make it real easy and debate this lot?:
Curtis Mayfield vs James Brown vs Stevie Wonder vs Marvin Gaye vs George Clinton vs Al Green vs Ray Charles etc - ha ha good luck!

Paul, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pendergrass of course, because Barry White isn't a bisexual cripple

dave q, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does Pendergrass have an outtakes boot anywhere near as funny as the legendary one of Barry White doing a spot on community college radio and getting progressively more and more pissed off? I thought not. Plus, Barry could eat Teddy alive and still have room for Minnie Ripperton. Barry White, people. Barry White.

John Darnielle, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Teddy Pendergrass for the end of "Come on over to my place" alone..trying to convince the ho to go home with him.

Isaac...muthaphuckin'...Hayes!!>

Lord Custos II, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Barry White: R&B auteur with a capital fuckin-A. Creator of mossy pillow talk disco kitsch. "I don't wanna see no panties." His best record was the Love Unlimited Orchestra's "Love's Theme," and he doesn't even sing or talk on it.

Teddy Pendergrass: Sang on all the Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes hits, then sang a whole lot of manly-man uptempo disco hits and manly-man slow jams which were a little more tasteless but still good. "Let's take a shower together."

Verdict: Teddy was on HM&TBN's "I Miss You." Therefore, he wins.

Michael Daddino, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Teddy P - he knows of what he speaks

Lord Custos II, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes yes yes, but this is all neglecting the real truth of the matter: Curtis Mayfield.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, if we're the question has actually become "Who will freak you?" then I I'll call your Curtis Mayfield and raise you a guy from Georgia. http://www.dustygroove.com/images/products/blowfly~~~~_blowflysd_101b.jpg (if there's no image in this posting then I did it wrong.)

Close the door Let me give you what you’ve been waiting for Baby, I’ve got so much love to give And I wanna give it all to you

Close the door No need to worry no more Let’s bring this day to a pleasant end Girl, it’s me and you now

I’ve waited all day long Just to hold you in my arms And it’s exactly like I thought it would be Me lovin’ you and you lovin’ me

Close the door Let me rub your back where you say it’s sore Come on get closer and closer, so close to me Let’s get lost in each other

Come here, baby

I’ve waited all day long Just to hold you in my arms And it’s exactly like I thought it would be Me lovin’ you and you lovin’ me

Close the door, baby And let me blow your mind Plenty good lovin’ all through the night And then again and then again when the morning comes

Come here, woman, uh

Come here, baby Let me blow your mind Let me do what I want to you Let me do what I want to you Let me make sweet love to you, baby, uh

Ooh, baby Oh, baby So good, baby So good, so good, so good baby, uh

You do it to me and I’ll do it to you Come here. baby Lay your head next to mine Oh, oh, oh, oh, ah, uh So good, sweet woman I like the way you make me feel I like the way you make me feel

So good So good So good, so good baby, uh

Let me do what I wanna do All I wanna do is make love to you Let me do what I wanna do All I wanna do is make love to you

Let me do-do-do-do-do-do-do, uh

Chris, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The answer is clear my friends...Teddy Fuckin P.

Teddy Fuckin P, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In these Taking Sides threads, is it customary to just choose someone else who's better than either? Certainly Curtis and Isaac are better, but that's not the question. Teddy's fine, but Barry White was a genuine classic figure, with one of the great pop images, the greatest honorific (The Walrus Of Love), and he was a really wonderful producer.

Martin Skidmore, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

TEDDY P

Uh, excuse me! I mean Teddy, Issac and Barry are alright and great, but u r forgettin the real legends like Sam Cooke, Al Green and the Kings of Soul themselves...James Brown and Marvin Gaye. Please, Marvin was smooth with his ****! Teddy copied him and Al, that's all. And Issac and Barry do something that's incredible, but I rather go with the styles of Marvin and Al over anything. If u weren't educated in "Let's Get It On" and "Let's Stay Together" and "Still In Love" and "U Sure Love 2 Ball", ur missing the fuckin' point! MARVIN P. GAYE, however, IS the greatest of all the soul men! Wish I had more info, but that's what I believe in my heart.

I just love to listen to the wonderful lyrics and symphonic strings, horns and percussions of Issac Hayes back in the day. Whenever I listen to "Walk on By" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", I cannot help by think back to the late sixties and early seventies. Those were really, really fond times for me. And again, whenever I have the chance to listen to the early works of Mr. Issac Hayes, I really jump at that given chance.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Friday, 21 May 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Important distinctions, I think: Teddy getting over on good voice and good looks, Barry getting over on charisma and THAT SOUND. One's choice here probably says a lot about one's aproach to seduction & lovemaking. Having had more success with the "Love Unlimited" approach, I'm-a have to go with Barry. Well, Major Harris, actually.

briania (briania), Friday, 21 May 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the Barry White sound bores me silly. Teddy every which way (ahem)
