The impulse for this thread comes from listening to LastFm & Pandora, where they claim to stream music that is comparable to a certain song or artist. I feel they usually get it quite wrong.
So, I'll start it out with "Straight to Hell" & "Ghetto Defendant" from the Clash. The songs echo each other (same album etc) but they really exist in their own sonic universe. OR DO THEY?

Very timely thread since I was listening to some early Stranglers today and thought to myself how there hasn't been a band that sounds remotely like them. Their sound is utterly unique.

Norwegian 80s act Beranek - although sometimes somewhat more electronic - did at times sound a lot like The Stranglers. More early 80s Stranglers than late 70s Stranglers though.

In this thread, when you lose, you actually win. Kwhitehead has won a round by gaining reference to Beranek. Congrats. Now, I'll try again. "Lady Cabdriver" & "All the Critics Love You" by Prince on 1999. Nothing else in his catalog or anybody else's sounds anything like it.

I'm not too familiar with the Stranglers, but their song "Peaches" sounds like the Fall to me (not sure who had this sound first).
― o. nate, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)
that's crazy, the Fall were never that funky

Is that the same early Stranglers who sound like the Doors with a less shit singer?
― Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)
The same Fall that were once almost signed to Motown? How could that be?
― o. nate, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)
I used to think that "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys was unique - but then <a ref="Are there any other songs that are technically similar to Sabotage by the Beasties?;>ILM schooled me.

No one sounds like SWANS. SWANS sound like no one.

I was just thinking Swans.

According to Last FM, Throbbing Gristle, Einstürzende Neubauten, Coil, Foetus, and Nurse With Wound all sound like Swans.
― Bobbi Peru, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)
Rat at Rat R occasionally sounded like early Swans.

i spent an entire night a while back watching nothing but stranglers on youtube. god, what a band. so amazing. and what amazing variety. youtube has some great live stuff on there. more people need to listen to stranglers records. they are a well known name that is somehow underrated/underheard. at least in the states. i don't know about elsewhere.
