The UK Top 50 of 1982 Poll

The 1981 one is finished today so I'll just do the same process with 1982. Somewhat early deadline because I will be in London from 14. until 17. and I don't know how much Net surfing there'll be.

Voted "The Look Of Love" because I don't want to vote for the same song I did in the 1981 poll.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

"Just An Illusion."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

Something's compelling me to vote "Land of make believe". I'll abstain until I come to my senses then vote for Kraftwerk or Soft Cell.

Human League

Not as good as 1981.

Something's compelling me to vote "Land of make believe". I'll abstain until I come to my senses then vote for Kraftwerk or Soft Cell.

I know what you mean, I've got this strange urge to vote for Wham!. I love The Model, but I'm sure I didn't even hear it at the time, whereas back then I thought Fame and Eye of the Tiger were amazing. How on earth were the Goombay Dance Band the eighth-biggest selling act in 1982?

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

Not as good as 1981.

Agreed. 1982 was still an excellent year, but it wasn't a landmark year for New Romantics/New Pop as much as 1981 was. And it was also sort of a silent before the storm before the new generations of new groups and artist that would debut during 1983 and 1984 and then take British music to the US charts like never before.

1983 and 1984 were better again IMO. But 1982 was also great. And at least the DX7 was yet to come, which was surely a good thing about 1982.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

Either of the Yazoo tracks, but I went with "Only You" because it's perfect. Particularly in a year that seemed to be filled with dancing day-glo fools.

snoball, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

I don't feel any great love for any of this. I was a Jam fan, and I'd have voted "Beat Surrender" in a beat, but hey, confronted with this lot on a jukebox, my 50p would go towards hearing:

Rocker's Revenge featuring Donnie Calvin Walking On Sunshine

Mark G, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

Somewhat early deadline because I will be in London from 14. until 17.

Are you fapping, Geir?

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

I think 50p would have got you three plays on a jukebox in 1982.

snoball, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

.. one of which would always be the "skinhead symphony" on the back of the Specials' "Too much too young Live" e.p., 9 mins!

Mark G, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

Geir is going to play Travis on the jukebox at the London fap.

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

Why, does it always rain on faps?

Mark G, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

Are you fapping, Geir?

LOL That would be 14th till 17th. :)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

Something's compelling me to vote "Land of make believe".

Everyone should vote for the track they actually liked best at the time. Then we would see some interesting results!

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

At the time I bought the Adam And The Ants, Toni Basil, Madness, Stranglers, Haircut 100 7" singles.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

At 11-12, I would have ended up voting for "Only You", which would be high on my list today too.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Such a good year for pop.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

That Odyssey song is so classy.

Eric H., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

"Pass the Dutchie"

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

These are the top contenders for me. All of them so personal, it's like choosing a favorite child. (I don't have children, maybe if I did one would be an obvious favorite and I'd need a different metaphor.)

Kraftwerk The Model / Computer Love
The Human League Don't You Want Me
Yazoo Only You
Yazoo Don't Go
Haircut 100 Love Plus One
ABC The Look Of Love
Duran Duran Hungry Like The Wolf

Ultimately, my vote goes to ABC just for bringing together so many amazing elements: one of Fry's best over-the-top vocal performances, appealingly arch lyrics and sophisticated songcraft, an elaborate big-budget production.

"Don't You Want Me" is the other biggest contender for me, and I can't help thinking of this in terms of Giorgio Moroder vs. Trevor Horn, even though plenty of talent resides in the two bands.

Paul in Santa Cruz, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

XP. "Don't You Want Me" isn't Giorgio Moroder, the entire "Dare" album was produced by Martin Rushent.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 09:25 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Won by the first single I ever bought...

Alba, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

Everyone should vote for the track they actually liked best at the time. Then we would see some interesting results!

I see that's what actually happened then.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Musical Youth in fourth place--I can live with that (hahaha...).

JN$OT, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

The Kraftwerk fans won again. :)

More of a spread on this one than on the 1981 one, apparently
(And, really, it may sure have to do with the fact that 1981 was a better year, with some obvious candidates)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

But "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and "Seven Tears"???? Seriously, I mean are you mad?????

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)
