enuff with the Missy love. I voted for Kylie, even though "Love At First Sight" isn't here. This was a really great pop year that's not reflected on this tally.

how the hell did "Soak Up The Suck" make this list??

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

The Blame Game:

http://www.villagevoice.com/specials/pazznjop/02/voted_for.php?titleid=101884

Greil Marcus I can kind of understand, but Skott?

Ms. Fremme Neppa Venette get's it again, in spite of some...er...stiff competition.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

Also: Former ILxors SFJ and Keith Harris--the villains!

JN$OT, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

Nelly, followed by Tweet, Kylie, and Missy.

Euler, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

et tu, Mikael? That list is SHAMEFUL.

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

lol and then I went and voted for the Vines. guess I'll put that first stone back in my pocket.

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

i really hope other people have realized how ban lose yourself aged.

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

I can't imagine a year where there weren't 10 songs better than Emo Of The Tiger.

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, but '02 comes pretty damn close regardless.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, this is a genuinely great list. I could make a strong case for about a dozen of these.

Although Alfred OTM that "Love at First Sight" > "Can't Get You Out of My Head."

jaymc, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

i'm either voting kylie, rapture or the clipse. probably the latter.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Although Alfred OTM that "Love at First Sight" > "Can't Get You Out of My Head."

The former got lot's of love from ILxors, though:

http://www.villagevoice.com/specials/pazznjop/02/voted_for.php?titleid=101718&poll_year=2002

JN$OT, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, but '02 comes pretty damn close regardless.

dude, Eminem's got a better song on this list than "Lose Yourself." Only songs in the top 20 I'd take it over are "Do Your Realise??" (once the second key change comes around) and "The Rising."

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

and maybe "in my place." "complicated" is a tie.

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, "Without Me" is definitely the better single--no argument there!

JN$OT, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

I'll still take "Lose Yourself" over "Without Me."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

you should be stomped by obie

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

eminem threatening moby for conspiring against him with Triumph The Insult Comic Dog while accepting his MTV music award is a moment he may never top.

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

speaking of Moby...

Moby: "We Are All Made of Stars" (V2)

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, pretty decent year. Missy leaves all competition lying bleeding in the gutter.

And as entertaining as Moby's cover of "Heroes" is, and the White Stripes cover of "Middle of the Road," I just can't vote for them over Missy.

Sara Sara Sara, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

At the time I was all about "Love At First Sight" over "Can't Get You Out Of My Head," which I actually didn't like all that much. Now, the two have switched positions.

Voted Rapture just over Clipse.

Eric H., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

Truth Hurts: "Addictive" (Aftermath/Interscope)
Scarface: "On My Block" (Def Jam South)
Justin Timberlake: "Like I Love You" (Jive)
Cam'ron: "Oh Boy" (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam)
Sean Paul: "Gimme The Light" (VP)

^^^all of these are really fucking awesome.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

you forgot Nas

deej, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

true also NORE. i would actually vote for "made you look" if it wasn't for "grindin'"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Elvis vs JXL: "A Little Less Conversation" (RCA)

^^i'm pretty sure this is john edwards' campaign song?

IF YOU WERE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT WHICH SONG FROM THIS LIST WOULD YOU CHOOSE AS YOUR CAMPAIGN SONG?

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

LCD Soundsystem: "Losing My Edge" (DFA)

^^JOHN MCCAIN WE HARDLY KNEW YE.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

ok that elvis remix is actually MITT ROMNEY'S campaign song.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

NEVER ENUF MISSY LOVE for that awesome single

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

true 'nuff.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

"Work It" is awsome but I always thought that last verse was oddly diffuse lyrically.

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

but hey, I'm voting for "Get Free." Why can't people get DOWN with Nirvana bubblegum? WHY?

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

tbh this poll's top 3 is almost as boring to me as the wilco/beck/flaming lips trifecta in the same year's albums poll.

(xpost Nirvana was more bubblegum than "Get Free". shorter doesn't equal catchier or more pop or whatever, and that song's a slog.)

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

if it was a slog you'd love it

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

lol not quite sloggy enough for me no

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

lol at "Hot in Herre" being boring...unless you mean because it's overplayed to you. o/w I don't see the comparison with the boringness of the Beck record.

Euler, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

Dirty Vegas: "Days Go By" (Capitol)

i like this lol car commercial lol electronica

deej, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

"days go by" like stops time for me. i love that song.

White Stripes, Dirty Vegas, Scarface = best videos

The Reverend, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

I go through very extended periods wondering if "Made You Look" isn't the best single of the decade, so I voted that.

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

That's completely reasonable. There are a lot of excellent songs here.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

actually, one of the other singles I tend to think is maybe best of decade is m.i.a. here: Moody, "Dove (I'll Be Loving You)"

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

i echo matos re: "made you look" though i also go through extended periods wondering if the remix isn't better.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 8 November 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

Voted for Truth Hurts. Missy's single is probably better, but it will get its share of votes. Tweet, Cam'ron, Kylie, a couple more singles also real good. But overall, one of the worst singles lists yet, I'm pretty sure. (And I've never really gotten Sean Paul, at all, which I don't doubt is my loss.)

What I voted for that year:

1 Ty Herndon "Heather's Wall" Epic
2 Faith Hill "One" Warner Bros.
3 Cordelia's Dad "Camille's Not Afraid of the Barn" Kimchee
4 Missy Elliott "Work It" Elektra
5 T.A.T.U. "All the Things She Said" Interscope
6 LeAnn Rimes "Life Goes On" Curb
7 Truth Hurts "Addictive" Aftermath/Interscope
8 Paulina Rubio "The Last Goodbye" Universal
9 Bomfunk MCs "Freestyler" Sony International
10 P.O.D. "Youth of the Nation" Atlantic

xhuxk, Thursday, 8 November 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

Voted Truth Hurts.

M.I.A.:

Las Ketchup: "Aserjé (The Ketchup Song)" (Sony Discos) - I overrated this some. But I fell for it hard after reading Jane Dark's review where s/he picked up that The Ketchups were ripping off "Rapper's Delight" as much as "Macarena."

FunDaMental: "Dexy's Enemy" (no label) - My favorite mashup ever. Which is kinda cheating cuz it's only 44 seconds long (at least the version I have). Still, two singular singles swing like a 1970s middle class couple. I've seen this listed as "Come on Boiii: Dexy's vs Public Enemy." And I have no clue why FunDaMental signed it.

Palomar: "Knockout" (Self-Starter)
Palomar: "Up!" (Self-Starter) - I guess I was being all Xgau in the Aughties with these two seeing as how they're not singles (that I know of). But the album they came from bore no more fruit which heightens their single-like quality. And goddamn - hyper indie kids somehow manage to rock the fuck out, an achievement all the more precious given how wobbly their rhythms and harmonies are.

P!nk: "Just Like A Pill" (LaFace)
Brandy: "What About Us" (Atlantic) - Do people really think all pop comes off an assembly line?

Bitter Sound Foundation: "Why Does Michael Hurt?" (no label) - An absolutely devastating mashup of "Smooth Criminal" and Carly Chic's "Why?" The track searches for what has mucked up Michael J's mind. It's like a deeply moral slasher flick where the violence is suffused with sourness, regret and pause. (Oh wait - Peckinpah did that already with Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia.)

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 8 November 2007 05:49 (eighteen years ago)

how the hell did "Soak Up The Suck" make this list??

I seriously thought this was an actual title by Limp Bizkit or whoever.

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 8 November 2007 05:56 (eighteen years ago)

"On My Block" vs. "Like I Love You" vs. "Grindin"

I'm going with Scarface, I think. Or Timberlake. Probably Scarface.

Tape Store, Thursday, 8 November 2007 05:58 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, funny. I'd never connected "The Ketchup Song" with "Macarena", but picked up on "Rapper's Delight" the first time I heard it.

I don't buy into concepts of "assembly line pop", but if any song has ever sounded like it came off an assembly line, then "What About Us" is it. It sounds like something from after the machines won.

The Reverend, Thursday, 8 November 2007 06:01 (eighteen years ago)

Then your machines be stickin' something fierce. Go oil 'em before they break down for good!

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 8 November 2007 06:06 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, my second-favorite year for music. Gotta be Tweet, with "Smells Like Booty" right behind. I forgot about "Nothing"! Man, what a great Neptunes year. Mystikal's "Bouncin' Back" would've been nice. "Oh Boy" and "On My Block" make up for it.

kiss out the jams, Thursday, 8 November 2007 06:40 (eighteen years ago)

"What About Us" is like a beautiful breach birth.

Eric H., Thursday, 8 November 2007 06:42 (eighteen years ago)

great year! I didn't like "Get Free" at the time but I like it now. I love like 95% of this list. Even beck. but I think I might go with JT - I just saw him a couple of nights ago, and had forgotten how awesome those Justified singles were.

The Reverend, Thursday, 8 November 2007 06:56 (eighteen years ago)

Wow this is tough. But in quite a few instances they chose the WRONG SINGLE... " Call Me" is so much better than "Oops... Oh My", "Get Busy">>>>> "Gimme The Light", "Obstacle 1">>>> "PDA" "Gossip Folks">>>>> "Work It", etc... and where is Brandy "Full Moon"? That is by far the best single from that year.... But anyway, I went with "Oh Boy"

ILX System, Friday, 9 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Very hot and cold list, some greats and some duds. I went with "Grindin'," although a handful of these could easily have trumped it.

Refresh my memory, was "What Happened to that Boy?" '03 or '04, because if it was '03 it is very much missed from this list. Probably one of the five or so best singles this decade, yam.

Also, can't wait for the next singles poll when the Pied Piper cleans that ish up.

talrose, Friday, 9 November 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

'03, I think.

The Reverend, Friday, 9 November 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't even see "Grindin'" til now! And I missed that Nore song, too. So the list is better than I gave it credit for above (but still more crapful than usual, I think.)

lol ilx isnt that clever

chaki, Saturday, 10 November 2007 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

possible reasons for high placement in bold:

"Soak Up the Sun" was the first single from Sheryl Crow's 2002 album C'mon, C'mon. The song, which features backing vocals by Liz Phair, peaked at #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, becoming one of her biggest hits since "All I Wanna Do". Although making less of an impact on the UK Singles Chart than her previous singles, the song still managed to enter the Top 20 at #16.

The song was remixed for club use by Victor Calderone.

Official remixes include: - Soak Up The Sun (Sunsweep Radio Mix) - Soak Up The Sun (Sunsweep Club Mix) - Soak Up The Sun (Sunsweep Dub)

The Kidz Bop Kids covered this song.

omar little, Saturday, 10 November 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't vote but I really enjoy "Soak Up the Sun" when I hear it on the shuttle bus. Would have prob voted DJ Shadow though. Norah Jones #2 maybe.

Sundar, Saturday, 10 November 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

"Soak Up the Sun" is actually quite alright by Sheryl Crow standards, but WTF?

J0rdan S., Saturday, 10 November 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

My friend the communist
Holds meetings in his RV
I can't afford his gas
So I'm stuck here watching TV
I don't have digital
I don't have diddly squat
It's not having what you want
It's wanting what you've got

I'm gonna soak up the sun
Gonna tell everyone
To lighten up (I'm gonna tell 'em that)
I've got no one to blame
For every time I feel lame
I'm looking up o I'm gonna soak up the sun
I'm gonna soak up the sun
I've got a crummy job
It don't pay near enough
To buy the things it takes
To win me some of your love
Every time I turn around
I'm looking up, you're looking down
Maybe something's wrong with you
That makes you act the way you do
Maybe i am crazy too

I'm gonna soak up the sun
While it's still free
I'm gonna soak up the sun
Before it goes out on me
Don't have no master suite
I'm still the king of me
You have a fancy ride, but baby
I'm the one who has the key
Every time I turn around
I'm looking up, you're looking down
Maybe something's wrong with you
That makes you act the way you do
Maybe I am crazy too

I'm gonna soak up the sun
Got my 45 on
So I can rock on.

Why on earth would you defend this song?

that "up and down, maybe i am crazy too" part before the chorus is hella shrill too.

Hell, at least it didn't beat "Work It." Better luck next time, Mr. Voter Fraud!
