Not that I read it or anythng but Kate Nash is a bit of a surprise. They actually rate her (above Winehouse, even)?
― DavidM, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, her shilling's still working.
check next year though. Unless she actually makes a blinding 2nd album, which could happen (ok, it'll be better than the first one easy)
― Mark G, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)
I've heard of two people on that list. Then again, I'm uncool
― Bill Magill, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)
I didn't know who Frank Carter was. Apparently it's this tit: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radioassets/photos/2007/3/21/17436_2.jpg http://www.bbc.co.uk/radioassets/photos/2007/3/21/17435_2.jpg

I'm pretty sure Gallows have never ever been mentioned on here until now. Today they turned a corner

I've never heard of number one or number four. Nobody else on the list is worth giving one shit about, except maybe keith richards, MAYBE. It just doesn't seem to matter, somehow. Like, not at all, in any way.
Do you still read nme, mark g, or just periodically check the website?
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)
I used to really care about the nme & all that, but I just don't give a shit! They could put goatseman on the front cover and I'd be like "yeah, whatever". Apparently it sells more copies these days? When I see it on the shelf at wh smiths I never even think about buying it.
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)
Still buy it, yeah. Hey, I'm still a young kid of 46 you know!
Actually, last weeks NME was a surprise! Intelligent letters page and some actual thoughtful discourse.
Mostly, it comes over as the "hey, aren't bands great!" lack of critical perspective like it was in the mid sixties (not that I bought it then, just judging by the ones I'd come across in Carnaby Court back in the day)
Mark S really should have written that book. Maybe he is!
― Mark G, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)
I kind of admire the fact that yr still reading it! Last time I picked one up was about a year ago? I think... The horrors were in it, is about all I can remember. There wasn't much discourse of any sort in it - I read it cover to cover in less than 20 minutes! Maybe I picked a bad week.
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)
No, that sounds about right.
It was mainly raised by the "love music, hate racism" promotion/free CD, which almost went a little better than "racism is bad, pass it on"
And now, it's a top 50 cool people list, and Led Zep's greatest hits again, reviewed my Dave Grohl. Guess how many out of 10? yep.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)
Mark S really should have written that book. Maybe he is!-- Mark G
Do you mean *that* "that book" - or is it some other book of his that you mean?
― t**t, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)
people were telling him to write a history of the music press.
AND HE SHOULD, TOO.
― That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)
Do you remember that spoof on "The Word" that "alan parker urban warrior" did on BBC2 years ago? It was v v funny. They had these little political segments where they'd be like "WAR Is BAD" or "CARS ARE LIKE TANKS". that's what the level of discourse in the issue I read was like, except parker (who wused to write for nme iirc?) was funny when he did it on TV. Well, a little bit funny.
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, that one. If that one is that *that* "that book", then um, yeah as well.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, I wondered why the director of Bugsy Malone was suddenly a bad class warrior for a while back then.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)
i think "*that* book" is the history of the technology/music interface he's had on the go for a while.
― That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)
oh right.
Not that *that* "that" book, then. The other one.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)
That one guy now hit that "that" that I suspected (wrongly) at first.
(Xpost)
― t**t, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)
this list would make sense if it meant "cool" i.e. the opposite of "hot"
― stephen, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)
What always surprises me about the NME is how they actually will review Fiery Furnaces and Animal Collective quite prominently in their pages. Likewise, their writers will say stuff like "such and such a band will appeal to Gang Gang Dance" fans. But these less mainstream acts don't really get much coverage outside of that, with the news pages devoted to Beth Ditto's inane agitprop bull or Johnny Borrell's stupid face or something. All the same, I'm surprised the former bands get mentioned at all. It goes to show that the writers do have a knowledge base outside of the tawdry Britrock contingent, but how do they expect their readership to understand these reference points (assuming they get most of their info from the paper itself)?
― the next grozart, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)
Wasn't it always that way though? When I bought the NME, in the mid-late 90s, they'd bang on about Britpop bands a great deal (3 page Shed 7 interview anyone?), but also review the latest US alt rock or hip hop records. I remember Only Built 4 Cuban Linx getting very good reviews in the NME and Melody Maker, for example.
― Neil S, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)
Look at a copy of the NME from 2000 now and it's a world apart. People like DJ Krush would get a decent amount of coverage. You look now and if the space isn't paid for it may as well be... the same bands get big coverage a lot.
You do get mentions and plaudits for Animal Collective etc, but by the same token I've seen generally positive Deerhoof reviews ruined by the patronising 'oh they're weirdos' type comments that just show how fucking clueless they are. Anything vaguely original is treated with an arms length caveat. Also the meagre four gig reviews a week level is atrocious in comparison to past coverage.

Kate Nash has nothing on Steve Nash. As far as 2007 is concerned that is.
