Damn, another one gone. He was one of the very greatest country band leaders, right up there with Wills, Tubb and Monroe.

From his wife Ana, via Hank's website:

Hank Thompson
September 3, 1925 - November 6, 2007
Hank, you will be missed.

There will be a celebration of Hank's life and all of his fans are invited. The event will be held on November 14, 2007 at Billy Bob's Texas, 2520 Rodeo Plaza, Ft Worth, Texas. Time: 2:00PM until ?

Ann has requested that, in lieu of flowers, a donation in Hank's name be made to The Heart of Texas Country Music Museum, 1701 Bridge St, Brady, TX 76825, or your favorite charity.

Aw, damn. Lived a good long life though.
First heard his music on the great Marshall Crenshaw-picked comp, "Hillbilly Music: Thank God! Vol. 1" (don't think there was ever a second volume).
I definitely need to explore his catalogue more. Is "Vintage" the best way to go?

RIP Hank.

Yes, Vintage is fantastic.

Already ordered it - just $5.47 from Amazon. Yippee.

Vintage is quite good, but don't miss At the Golden Nugget, an early '60s live album, the first live album by a commercial country artist I think, and a real cooker. Also, iTunes etc just started carrying mp3 only reissues of his original Capitol albums. That shit's great, and has been OOP for way too long.

That's too bad. I love his stuff with the Brazos Valley Boys

He's one of the few artists for which a Bear Family boxed set didn't feel like overkill. So if you've got the bucks, it's a good way to go.

I can believe that. Even on a packed CD like his entry in the "Capitol Collector's Series" had a bunch of good stuff I'd never heard.

Omit extra word(s) in the above post as you choose.
