Answer Me Question

(Title stolen from Dillinger.)

A lot in reggae is difficult to pin down. Production and songwriting credits are often missing or difficult to find. Even song and record titles seem to change between the outer sleeve and label.

Together we can tame the wild beast.

My question today is this:

What is the songwriting credit for Leroy Smart's recording "Ballistic Affair"?

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

From the evidence I have viewed:

Leroy Smart
Johnny Clarke
L. Smart and Johnny Clarke
Agrovators

Which?

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

I just looked at a compilation record I have that credits it to one Frankie Jones! A whole new contender.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

I don't understand why people say they are "licking a pipe" to denote weed smokeage.

roxymuzak, Sunday, 11 November 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

Someday, someone will answer one of my questions.

Here is another:

Was the version of "The Harder They Come" from the movie soundtrack produced by Jimmy Cliff or Leslie Kong, or both?

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 07:06 (eighteen years ago)

they're all probably different 'versions', for example the band Roots Radics or the Aggrovators or Upsetters or some other studio band would play for a bunch of different producers, such as Scientist or Jammy or Tubby, who would either credit them or not, and then use the same backing track on tons of different dubs. Or, they'd start off with a John Holt, Ken Boothe or Desmond Dekker song, strip the vocals, and you'd never otherwise know it was Ken Boothe (or his backing band) until years later when you get a Ken Boothe CD and recognize the background. With roots music you can follow artists or producers and it's no big deal, because either way you get amazing stuff. Lately I've been digging the producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee. Also, he's off season now, but I've always enjoyed Mark Lamarr's Reggae shows on Radio 2, he actually really knew his stuff. Oh shit, to answer your question, it's probably the Aggrovators backing Leroy Smart, but maybe it's a 'version' of an older song; and Leslie Cong was only a producer, and Jimmy Cliff was never a producer I think.

Chelvis, Thursday, 22 November 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I know Kong was only a producer. Cliff definitely produced some of his own stuff, though.

roxymuzak, Friday, 23 November 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

I've really been digging on Bunny Lee lately, too. Which brings me to another question: it never occured to me that people rip on "Chery Oh Baby" until I read something about it on the Stylus review of "Tougher Than Tough"...Plagenhoef says something about it being a deservedly maligned track or something! I have never heard anything bad about that song. I, for one, like it a bunch, for what it's worth.

Also, I think you must be right about the Aggrovators on the Smart track.

roxymuzak, Friday, 23 November 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

is it aggrovators? roots archives and riddimbase both say producer joseph hoo kim who ran channel one, and backing band the revolutionaries

johnny clarke's another singer who did a lot with bunny lee

am0n, Friday, 23 November 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

That link didn't work, but there are 2 popular versions of "Ballistic Affair", one sung by Owen Gray and the other sung by Leroy Smart.

roxymuzak, Friday, 23 November 2007 05:06 (eighteen years ago)

It was the revolutionaires, you're otm.

roxymuzak, Friday, 23 November 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

yeah that link (before ilx fucked it up) showed those 2 versions along w/ johnny clarkes version. i think typically song credits go to the singer or the producer, the bands are just hired guns for the studio.

some nerds discuss it here and draw no conclusion lol

am0n, Friday, 23 November 2007 05:53 (eighteen years ago)

Haw @ nerds!

I guess I shouldn't have said "credit" in my orginal question. The credit is obviously all over the place; I just want to know who actually wrote it. I don't care a lot, but I'd like to know. I was hoping it was Smart himself.

I wonder where the idea that it was written by Frankie Jones originated?

roxymuzak, Friday, 23 November 2007 05:58 (eighteen years ago)

I like how a google for "frankie jones ballistic affair" has this thread as the third result.

Why did Trojan separate the mix for the '89 pressing of Screaming Target? Ruins it for headphones. But nice if you are into karaoke.

roxymuzak, Friday, 23 November 2007 06:15 (eighteen years ago)

leroy smart did one of my favorite reggae songs: http://www.zshare.net/audio/5101475cb5dc56/

can't help with the jimmy cliff ?uestion as i never got into him

i think "lick" is like "hit". the one i don't get is "sip" like in gregory isaacs mr. cop he uses "licking a cup" and "sipping a cup"

am0n, Friday, 23 November 2007 06:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, sip!!! That's weird, too! (And kinda cute!)

Leroy Smart is the best, "Ballistic Affair" is probably my favorite single ever.

roxymuzak, Friday, 23 November 2007 06:32 (eighteen years ago)

Why did Trojan separate the mix for the '89 pressing of Screaming Target?

I have a copy of the original vinyl pressing, Roxy, and, from what I can recall (haven't actually listened to it in ages), I can tell you that it has always been separated like that. Well, up to that point in time, at least.

JN$OT, Friday, 23 November 2007 09:47 (eighteen years ago)

I have an original pressing of it too, and it always sounded normal to me, but I have only listened to it up really loud and between the speakers, not on headphones, so who knows. Everything I've read on the issue (admittedly not much) seems to imply that it was done to it in 1989.

roxymuzak, Friday, 23 November 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

I imagine that strange mix is the original. I would think that "Screaming Target" might have been produced with one eye on the non-Jamaican market, where the assumption would be made that mixes in stereo would be more "acceptable". Not many reggae producers and engineers in the 70s were experienced in mixing for stereo!

The whole question of who wrote what song and who got paid for what and what exactly did this producer or that one do is a can of worms - well, more of an industrial-sized vat of worms.

Yeah! That's why I made the thread, dude!

a fuck-up or it was on purpose to make it easy for dubbing? the 2006 reissue fixed this btw.

A thread is probably a good start on a board that pretty much ignores reggae, right?
