One of the best records of 2007, easy.

― Dominique, Thursday, 8 November 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)
is this the record of their that Carla Bozulich guested on? I'd been meaing to check that out and hadn't gotten around to it.
― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 8 November 2007 05:18 (eighteen years ago)
theirs
i'm actually not sure about that, alex.
but i definitely put it on my best non-dance of the year. that and the Beach House 'reissue.'
― the table is the table, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)
really liking this. i put it on while falling asleep last night and felt appropriately spooked but sedated.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:40 (eighteen years ago)
otm.
bought it at their show last night and am in the process of squeezing it into my musical review of 2007. much to the chagrin of my editor who wanted the piece four days ago.

Erika has some solo stuff on the way, along with a pretty new blog:
somedarkholler.wordpress.com
Check the film of her recording in her apartment. <3

Erika's awesome ... she's opening up for Throbbing Gristle in SF next Thursday.
― photoshop your disgusting ass partner into passive-aggressive notes (sarahel), Tuesday, 14 April 2009 18:49 (sixteen years ago)
saw them tonight at the Lab, probably the best live performance of "White Like Heaven" i've ever heard-- the throbbing went straight to the bones. awesome.

seriously jealous. haven't had much contact with E recently but I'm hoping they/she'll book a UK/Europe tour sometime soon. They haven't been here since December 07 so I think we're due a visit.
― N1ck (Upt0eleven), Monday, 13 July 2009 08:37 (sixteen years ago)
ok, the EMA album is really fucking good
― Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)
And she's playing a small UK tour in May. I should probably not get too excited about this.
― DISPLAY NAMING RIGHTS (Upt0eleven), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)
yeah EMA album's great.
― difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 20:12 (fourteen years ago)
and she's in portland early next month. haven't been this excited for a show in like forever. possibly literally forever. i'm weird with shows. but oh man love this record so much.
― difficult listening hour, Thursday, 7 April 2011 01:13 (fourteen years ago)
she lives in Portland now.
― sarahel, Thursday, 7 April 2011 01:14 (fourteen years ago)
As much as I've gone nuts over "California", lol "fuck California you made me boring" and then she moves to Portland.
― Cosmo Vitelli, Thursday, 7 April 2011 01:24 (fourteen years ago)
most of the rest of the band lived there already.
― sarahel, Thursday, 7 April 2011 01:27 (fourteen years ago)
lol "fuck California you made me boring" and then she moves to Portland.
to be fair this is like 45% of portland's origin story
― difficult listening hour, Thursday, 7 April 2011 01:38 (fourteen years ago)
Dear Portland,
Sorry we sent you so many of our boring people.
Your Friend,
California
― sarahel, Thursday, 7 April 2011 01:40 (fourteen years ago)
sort of an oregon thing too. i was in a rural bar last summer and witnessed this dude (with a hitler stache to boot) drunkenly slagging off cali-to-oregon transplants only to then tearfully admit that he was one too. he also said that he cross dressed "with the best of them." then he got kicked out.
"grey ships" sounds oregon in title and sound
― teflon dawn (uptown churl), Thursday, 7 April 2011 03:38 (fourteen years ago)
haha yes growing up in Seattle area my dad always bitched about the Californian influx, somehow ignoring the fact that he was from Cali. Now my brother and I both live in the golden state, completing the boring circle i guess.
Back to EMA, is anything else here remotely as righteous as this song or will I be disappointed when I listen to the whole album?
― Cosmo Vitelli, Thursday, 7 April 2011 05:07 (fourteen years ago)
"california"'s a peak but "marked" and the closing track are also huge.
― difficult listening hour, Thursday, 7 April 2011 05:15 (fourteen years ago)
California works better with video. I found the song a bit boring without the visuals. A bit like INXS or something. Similarly I was bored by the album- fell asleep on my couch. Like Grey Ship though. Maybe I need to try it again.
― Hinklepicker, Thursday, 7 April 2011 06:28 (fourteen years ago)
Disagree. Listening to this now, sounds pretty damn perfect to me.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Monday, 11 April 2011 22:59 (fourteen years ago)
is this where we talk about the EMA album now that it's actually out, or can it support its own thread?
not that I can think of much to say yet, but it is getting me through the day.

I love this album. Watching her in London tomorrow night. Did anyone watch her at the Macbeth tonight?
― PG Harpy (Doran), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 22:15 (fourteen years ago)
xpost, i stand by that
― chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 22:22 (fourteen years ago)
I saw that band so many times in 2007.
― sarahel, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 22:26 (fourteen years ago)
Very curious to know how she is live. There seems to have been a major PR dropping of the ball in that regard in the US. Her current live plans are a short tour in June opening for (FFS!) Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.
― Position Position, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 02:01 (fourteen years ago)
ffs
― chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 02:02 (fourteen years ago)
lol "california" is legit terrible
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 02:03 (fourteen years ago)
California is legit bodacious.
― PG Harpy (Doran), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 02:12 (fourteen years ago)
the dale earnhardt jr jr ep from last year was cool imo
also better than kurt vile i mean srsly
any1 who h8s on 'california' needs to level up
― gimme the lootpack (Lamp), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 02:21 (fourteen years ago)
she quotes camptown races
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 02:25 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, so? the track rules. and if you diss her again, all i can say is CAN YOU BLOW THROBBING GRISTLE OUT OF THE WATER? the resounding answer would be no, so please take the hate elsewhere.

(seriously, tho, she blew TG away when they played here on that final tour. it was shocking.)
― it is his "enigmatic signifier" (the table is the table), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 03:00 (fourteen years ago)
i disagree, but her set was pretty good.
― sarahel, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 03:02 (fourteen years ago)
oh. i though TG sucked. and i really like TG. maybe it was my fanboy rabidity that set me up for a disappointment.

i was trying to google something about gowns the other day and one of the first things i ended up with was some (WHINEY) G. Weingarten roundup of noise releases mentioning 'dangers of intimacy'
bleh
i really don't understand why people are so reluctant to start new threads on things these days
