i would have gone for Under BOAC until this week. now i have to go for Arch Carrier which goes right back to their b-boy roots.

jed_, Saturday, 10 November 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

Arch Carrier is the choice. Although there are so many decent tunes.

the next grozart, Saturday, 10 November 2007 02:02 (eighteen years ago)

Arch Carrier, with Rae a close second.

Melissa W, Saturday, 10 November 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

arch carrier

i like every track on this though, which i can't say for any other autechre album

ciderpress, Saturday, 10 November 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

the silence after "Drane2" and before the Hidden track FTW

stephen, Saturday, 10 November 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

Under BOAC

for some reason I really like the "is it washable?" line they throw in there

peter in montreal, Saturday, 10 November 2007 07:36 (eighteen years ago)

Arch Carrier - well the Knightrider style tune is neat but the beats are just too plain for my tastes. Acroyear2 is a better package, with the great needling melody and all the weird shit in the background. However I'm gonna vote for the controlled spiral descent of Drane2, one of their best mood pieces.

ledge, Saturday, 10 November 2007 10:41 (eighteen years ago)

fucking classic

cutty, Saturday, 10 November 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

I went for 'Drane2', but on another day it'd be 'Rae'. Their best mid-to-late period record for me.

Mister Craig, Saturday, 10 November 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

Fold4, Wrap5

the rest is like zzz

It's not about the beat, it's about the incredible yet subtle string sounds that rise through the track.

the next grozart, Saturday, 10 November 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

absolutely agree. one of their most emotional tunes.

jed_, Saturday, 10 November 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

Fold 4, Wrap5 is what time travel sounds like. Brilliant.

Loader, Saturday, 10 November 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

Drane2 is really the only enjoyable track. Of all the Autechre full lengths this was clearly the most overrated and the fastest to seem dated.

Mr. Goodman, Saturday, 10 November 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

rong! it's still their best one.

the next grozart, Saturday, 10 November 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

Nope, sorry.

Mr. Goodman, Saturday, 10 November 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

dope album, sounds great on the hi-fi. hard to pick a single track as it's better as a whole. rae, while being very pleasant/dense/soft-crunching, doesn't do a lot for me. /me luvs da melancholy melody sense of 'corc'

Lowell N. Behold'n, Sunday, 11 November 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

mr. goodman, you are a moron now get the fuck out of here before i call the police.

latebloomer, Sunday, 11 November 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

I think I listened to this all the way through like twice trying really hard to like it and then ditched it. 1998-2001 is when IDM all went up its own ass and made me hate it after years as an unabashed warp fanboy. silence ftw.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 11 November 2007 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

highlights:

"acroyear 2" = freestyle (as in nu shooz, debbie deb, latin rascals) junglism

"vose in" = pure paranoid menace, like watching the ford assembly line robots do secret lock-and-pop battles at night

"fold 4, wrap 5" = lil louis' "french kiss" retooled for R2 droids

"corc" = result of listening to disc 1 of "wu tang forever" too many times

"drane 2" = hail falling through broken skylights at the rusty zither warehouse

lowlights:

"rae" = emo

"under BOAC" = blue man group plays the music of santeria

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 11 November 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

i'm voting for vose in

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 11 November 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

"THIS IS THE POLICE, HATAZ LEAVE OR FACE THE CONSESQUENCES"

latebloomer, Sunday, 11 November 2007 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

i'm in a bitchy mood today

latebloomer, Sunday, 11 November 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

EMO? seriously?

Because it's really emblematic of emo bands to write eloquently yearning melodies and harmonies...

Turangalila, Sunday, 11 November 2007 05:24 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and... Arch Carrier, of course.

Turangalila, Sunday, 11 November 2007 05:26 (eighteen years ago)

I never quite got the hang of the first two tracks I'm afraid, but the rest is gold. Maybe my favourite IDM album.

the next grozart, Sunday, 11 November 2007 06:20 (eighteen years ago)

i'm sorry for calling mr. goodman a moron. i was in a really bad mood last night.

latebloomer, Sunday, 11 November 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

i think it was justifiable :)

jed_, Sunday, 11 November 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

Def "Drane2" but tracks 3, 6, and 8 were all contenders.

Sundar, Monday, 12 November 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

"drane2"

i wanted to listen before voting so i just did and man does this album sound labored over.

xpost, dammit. +1 to drane2

tricky, Thursday, 15 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

it would've been interesting if the poll results were a fibonacci number.

it would've been interesting nerdtastic if the poll results were a fibonacci number.

tricky, Thursday, 15 November 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

i think that is was the appeal of autechre back then. first time i heard this album i thought it sounded like showing off, but underneath it all there's a lot of melody and genuinely interesting ideas going on. they lost that in later years sadly.

the next grozart, Thursday, 15 November 2007 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

if anything, listening to LP5 today made me appreciate both their later and earlier stuff more. i have been playing amber a lot lately and it is just as good as LP5 and a lot less pretentious sounding.

tricky, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

YES THANK YOU

El Tomboto, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:23 (eighteen years ago)

this is really cliche for ye olde 90s idm listeners I know, but Tri Repetae with the ++ eps (us release) is really my happy medium. Amber borders on being a little bit too comfortable, but there was that shining moment when they were being just weird enough without forgetting that they were making music and not just msp patches

El Tomboto, Thursday, 15 November 2007 02:27 (eighteen years ago)

i always found tri rep a little boring and loop-based for my taste. bar a couple of songs, there isn't a whole lot going on in the way of melody, not like LP5.

the next grozart, Friday, 16 November 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

then again, in the UK you never got the eps tacked on the end so you're stuck with the first ten tracks.

the next grozart, Friday, 16 November 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

yea some of the best stuff on the american release is on the second disc

Mark Clemente, Friday, 16 November 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

it's the Anvil Vapre and Envane EPs, right? Yeah those are really good and I can see why a lot of people like Tri Rep because of them, but I find the album proper to be a bit dry and isolated. Then there was Chiastic Slide, which is actually more experimental and challenging to listen to than LP5. I like LP5 because it has a warm, fun edge to it and each track has a gimmik or idea that sets it apart from the rest. You can say 'Oh, Arch Carrier, that's the Knightrider one with the strings' or 'Fold4, Wrap5 is the one that speeds up and slows down' or 'Under BOAC' is that monstrous noise with "is it washable?" on it.
