Here's a helpful way to tell them apart: Hewy Lewis songs are sung by a man; Jets songs (at least the singles) are sung by women.

it has chintzy instrumentation compared to the original, but mostly it's just her pipes weren't up to it so she drowned it in really ridiculous-sounding melisma.
― Neanderthal, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 00:19 (nine years ago)
at least if it'd been mid-career she'd have made it into a dance tune or somefin
― Neanderthal, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 00:20 (nine years ago)
actually the instrumentation isn't horrible, it just sounds like the bands that play on Kids Disney cds
it has chintzy instrumentation compared to the original
the original:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AettOduIHjk
Cheesy '80s instrumentation was built into the song. Rupert Holmes:
I thought it would be a challenge to see if I can write a love song that sounds appropriate sung by a 14-year-old girl. This was before we had all the Britneys, Mandy Moores, and all these teen stars. I purposely tried to write a very clear, simple, unaffected lyric that would have a little lilt to it, that would be a positive song for a young girl getting over her first heartbreak. Letting her know that this boy she just lost, or who didn't treat her appreciatively, was not going to be the only boy she'd ever have as a boyfriend.

uhhhhh going back upthread, the Holmes version posted isn't the original, it's a demo track with a scratch vocal that wasn't released to the public until 2007.
― Neanderthal, Thursday, 16 February 2017 14:41 (eight years ago)
the 'chintzy instrumentation' was because it was a demo

Surprised that Christmas with the Jets was still in print, at least digitally (I'm listening to it on Apple Music). Alas, it's terrible--all originals, despite some deceptively titled songs ("This Christmas," "I'll Be Home For Christmas"), and all schmaltzy, bloodless ballads. The most impressive thing about the album might be how quickly they managed to turn around a cover of "Somewhere Out There" (the An American Tail song): the Linda Ronstadt/James Ingram version debuted on the Billboard charts the week of November 15, 1986 (a week ahead of the film's theatrical release), while the Jets album was released on November 30 of the same year!

Re: You Got It All
Moana Wolfgramm and Elizabeth Wolfgramm were only aged 10 and 12 respectively when they recorded their vocals for the song, and Elizabeth had difficulty connecting with the lyrics because she was too young to grasp the romantic feelings. The manager told her to imagine she was singing it to a puppy.

Wow, there were 17 kids in that family, and only the youngest eight were in The Jets.
I'm partial to Haini Wolfgramm, one because that's an awesome name and two because he sang lead on "Rocket 2 U," my favorite Jets song.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Islanders_and_Mormonism
that particular article doesn't really go into it, but in mormon areas of the u.s. you'll find polynesian communities that are often ghettoized. the conversion and emigration became a weird facsimile of colonialism and quasi slavery, see for a particularly disturbing example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iosepa,_Utah
i don't know the backstory of how the wolfgramms ended up in robbinsdale, mn.
i remember the cassette tape of "magic" and playing it in my little dual deck boombox, rewinding "make it real" over and over again. my parents made sure to buy us pop music made by mormons. the nylons were another family fav (mormon men's a capella group). i must have been 5 yo.
