I am posting about music software at 12:04 in the morning. :/

Yays:

* Media library is way better and finally worth using.
* Smart playlists integrated
* Lots of ways to display your music: album art centric, flat spreadsheet style, customizable mix of the two.
* Auto-tagger works OK
* Detects plugged in ipods and copies music from them back to your library
* Winamp remote lets you stream music on any other computer and some phones (my iphone worked)

Nays:

* Memory hog
* Album art downloader is mostly broken
* Weird banner ads on the dashboard'
* Crappy podcast directory

Is there no "lite" download anymore? I used to get the version that didn't contain "emusic-7plus" in the filename.

I still use Winamp 2.91!

'winamp remote' sounds cool but i got my heart set on mediamonkey 3 soon as it gets out of beta.

I downloaded 5.5, took one look at all the options and library and other useless stuff and just selected the classic skin again.

(useless to me, that is. I can see how people might use libraries, but I don't.)

I'm going to stick with 5.13 - I don't need all that extra stuff and especially not BANNER ADS.

If I don't use the media library is there any point upgrading?

(I'd like a masstagger, but I keep foobar around just for masstagging purposes. That and the tabbed playlists. I must check out the new foobar since I hear it no longer looks like Excel for those of us not inclined to spend hours reading manuals and downloading plugins and tinkering.)

does it still whip the llama's ass?

wait, people still use winamp? that kind of blows my mind out.

i use mp3tag (www.mp3tag.de). handles mp3, flac and ogg well. has nice scriptable macros which i use for munging filenames to cross-platform standards (lowercase alphas, digits, underscores and a single dot only)

(that's windows only. i use kid3 on linux, which is less handy but i have decent abcde settings and php scripts for most of it)
