feel free to add your own/next choice into the contest (who's missing). female R&B vocalists obviously, but you can give bonus points for extra vocular (madeupword?) activities, e.g. songwriting...

also, do you like some of 'em but not others?

chances to catch Etta live should not be passed up lightly answers!

Why not Carla Thomas?

You need to have some Patti LaBelle in there, too.

(Who's more underrated than Minne Riperton, though?)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Irma Thomas, for one.

Andrew L, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sugarpie DeSanto, Mabel John, Freda Payne.

Sarah Vaughan!

Aretha is one of the greatest vocalists ever. The others are good too.

Can I mention the criminally overlooked Esther Phillips? And in not quite so modern a context, the divine Sarah Vaughan.

Peggy Lee comes with an extra large side-helping of extra-vocular bonus points

I'm with Andrew L - Irma Thomas is the big, big omission. Aretha is probably my fave, though, boringly. Candi Staton was great too, and she's the only one who's been around for decades and made a terrific record in the '90s (You Got The Love, obv, especially the Now Voyager mix).

Dusty.

Why?

Because she sounded like she was seriously into sex.

Nina Simone , holy fuck can that woman belt love and anger and pride - plus she has danced naked on dirt floors in ghana

one month passes...
I bought a cup of coffee at a coffee-shop in Midtown yesterday, when Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You" came on the radio. I think it came out in 1973(?), but it struck me that it wouldn't sound the least bit out of place or outdated on any R&B station today. So I guess that at least that song was ahead of its time?
