"The Universal" will probably walk this because people don't realize the greatness of "Country House". Voted "Country House" - best Britpop song ever!

Geir Hongro, Monday, 12 November 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

"Best Days" just slides by "The Universal" for me.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 12 November 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

That Neptunes track...the one where she talks about making babies like pancakes. Or maybe it was about babies making pancakes? Or making pancake babies?

Tape Store, Monday, 12 November 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

Is "Ernold Same" the worst Blur song?

(hint: yes)

Mark G, Monday, 12 November 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

I can't even remember how "Best Days" goes!

"The Universal" is a non-brainer here.

wanko ergo sum, Monday, 12 November 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

I love the video for "Charmless Man" though.

wanko ergo sum, Monday, 12 November 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

Fade Away. Horribly brilliant.

pisces, Monday, 12 November 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

Fight between 'Fade Away', 'Best Days', 'He Thought of Cars' and 'Yuko and Hiro'. A lot of it's a mess, but it's an utterly compelling mess.

Billy Dods, Monday, 12 November 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

'He Thought of Cars' for me. Yuko and Hiro is quite nice in a super sweet sickly way.

Best sentiment. I hate Ernolds.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

My favorite Blur album. It's a toss up between "The Universal" and "He Thought of Cars."

David Bachyrycz, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 08:21 (eighteen years ago)

'He Thought of Cars' for me. Yuko and Hiro is quite nice in a super sweet sickly way.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD!

stevie, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 09:16 (eighteen years ago)

The worst Blur song is either "Chinese Bombs", "Trimm Trabb" or "Bank Holiday". And "Globe Alone" is the worst on "The Great Escape". But "Ernold Same" is hardly classic either.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

worst Blur song: 'Tender'

braveclub, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

gotta go with 'stereotypes'. love that guitar hook

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

"Trimm Trabb" WTF that's one of the best songs on that album. Oh it's Geir, never mind.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

trick question, of course: they're all shit.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Yuko and Hiro.

Dr.C, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

So did I. Pipe down NRQ!

Just got offed, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

TBH I could have voted for any one of those last 3 tracks; they're feckin' brilliant. He Thought Of Cars, Best Days and Fade Away are all superb too.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

"Trimm Trabb" WTF that's one of the best songs on that album. Oh it's Geir, never mind.

Haha, I was going to say this exactly.

I voted for Best Days, although I actually really like Country House.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

I thought I will be the only one voting for "Fade Away"... terrific. The best song Terry Hall didn't write.

zeus, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

"He thought of cars".

paulhw, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

"Fade Away" is brilliant. And Terry Hall? Well, maybe. It sounds like early 80s Specials, and Terry Hall was part of that. I think more of the very Fun Boy Three-like "T.O.P. M.A.N" when you namecheck Terry Hall though.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

I like Fade Away because it conveys tacky suburban midlife asphyxiation so beautifully. Horribly brilliant, indeed, and brilliantly horrible.

This thread needs Noodle Vague, because I know he's gonna vote for Y&H.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, this is a good poll for once, as it's an album that gets a lot of hate in it's completed state, and I have to say I must have played it all about twice.

But tracks like Fade Away are memorable, possibly because of that Japan Live album.

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 08:03 (eighteen years ago)

OK, Japanese live album you corny David Sylvian fuxxz

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 08:03 (eighteen years ago)

Geir:
Allmusic also namechecks Terry Hall regarding "TOPMAN", but I always felt that "Fade Away" is the really Specials/Fun Boy Three pastiche.

zeus, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 09:46 (eighteen years ago)

"Trimm Trabb" WTF that's one of the best songs on that album. Oh it's Geir, never mind.

-- Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 23:38 (Yesterday) Bookmark Link

Yeah, wtf? It's impossible to hate Trimm Trabb. One of Albarn's finest moments.

Globe Alone is ace too. Geir am strange person.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 10:00 (eighteen years ago)

The only reason I don't rate Trimm Trabb as high, maybe, is it reminds me of the Shake and Vac advert.

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

What a crap album, in retrospect. I'm going with "Globe Alone."

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

The first three were not at all surprising (and they are all great). Happy that as many as five people voted for the supposedly "twee" "Country House" though. IMO the best song of the entire Britpop era.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

ok WTF

really shoulda voted for dan abnormal in retrospect.

Just got offed, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

OF RONG

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

I wish I had voted for "Entertain Me", because it deserves at least one vote and should NOT be below Ernold Same.

Duane Barry, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

I can't even remember how The Universal goes ffs. Never mind that I've heard this album a billion times.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

You know, orchestra! "It really really really should happen"

Mark G, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

"Entertain Me" always struck me as a half-hearted re-working of "Girls & Boys."

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

But, again, I probably haven't listened to this album since about 1996.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

it is an inspired reworking of girls and boys. miles better than the original.

Just got offed, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

i think the problem with 'the universal' is, damon dropping his haitches.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

Ah Louis, of course I voted for "Yuko & Hiro". That song never doesn't make me cry. It's everything fucked about Modern Life, perfect coda for the whole trilogy.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

"Yuko & Hiro" is really beautiful. And am I the only one who voted for "Fade Away"?!

zeus, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

Very unsurprising Top 3. And OK I guess, considering all three are great songs. "Country House" is still the best they ever did though.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

oh you.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

hi guys i've listened to yuko & hiro three times on repeat now, it is a pleasant respite from my pizza grilling (arf)

Just got offed, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

"Globe Alone" is the worst on "The Great Escape".
