British Murder Boy Surgeon releases his first ever commercial mix this month.
Taking its title from an onstage rant by Suicide, 'This is For Your Shits' is billed as a dynamic and fast cut selection of techno featuring Warp artists such as Autechre, Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, electronic noise bands Throbbing Gristle, Scorn and Whitehouse as well as Surgeon's own uncompromising material. The mix was recorded in 2006.
The release is limited to 1,000 individually numbered and hand-finished CDs via mail order from Warp.

He was pretty good in LA last year but it got a little oppressive sounding after a few hours in. I guess this is my own personal prefs coming out but I always wish he'd drop more dubhouse, booty and detroit stuff and less dubstep and industrial. The visuals gave me some serious fucking heebie jeebies too.

Man, this Glade mix is fucking intense!
Sometimes you just need these kind of sets.

I couldn't really get into it. I will try again. For some reason I thought Surgeon was a super IDM guy not some breakcore dude.
― Alex in SF, Saturday, 22 December 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)
yeah it's damn good to hear this again, 'need' is right, only really listened to the mega-mega-awesome parts last time, was kinda ADD about it. Anyone heard the CD mix yet?
― fandango, Saturday, 22 December 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)
breakcore? i thought surgeon was full on, straight-up, loop-crazy techno! like james ruskin on steroids! at least he was back in 1998... i'll have to listen to this some time when i'm not sitting at my mother's computer
― Tracer Hand, Saturday, 22 December 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)
isn't he hard house? the middle class kind?
― Ronan, Saturday, 22 December 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)
^^ LOL
he *was* full-on straight-up loop-crazy techno back in the late 90s, basically a stricter, harder, sterner jeff mills. but now he's integrated ableton golive and final scratch into his DJ sets, so he can shoehorn the stuff he loves into his mixes. apparently being from birmingham he's always been a huge industrial fan, so there's some of that thrown in there (whitehouse, throbbing gristle, etc). and i guess the IDM thing has always been bubbling under the surface - he did a "treated guitars" drone album for kanzleramt offshoot K2O, and of course there's the incredible disjecta-esque LFO remix he did for warp. the bigger surprise is that's he's a jungle, reggae and dubstep fan!
i've been listening a lot to his counterbalance collection mix CD he did in 2001, basically just a bunch of his own tracks from his counterbalance label. listening to it again (i'd put it away for about 4 years) makes me realize a few things. first of all, i'm totally inured to "extreme music". i could go to sleep to pounding 4/4 drums, merzbow, whatever. is it time to start listening to classical music? second, there's a heavy basic channel influence that i never heard in his work before. the whole thing has this finely modulated pulse of static running through it, think cyrus or quadrant. fantastic mix.

his remix of 'sensefiction' remains one of my favorite records i own. sick shit, that remix.
