Do you remember the 1980's? i was there too...

Zeno, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

I remember loving this album, but I'd have to listen anew...

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

"Killing the Bland", maybe.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

is that the one which scottish mick refused to sing because he thought it sounded like the primitives? is it wise to start another prolapse thread given how the last one worked out?

cw, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

shhh. if we all keep quiet ...

zappi, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

No I thought that was "Autocade".

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

it was

and it's the best song here, if not their best song full stop

electricsound, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

although this is a damn fine record overall

electricsound, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

great album, not a great live band tho'

zaxxon25, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

Oh I dunno about that, they were great when I saw them. Was around the time of this album, I think.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I saw them on the Italian Flag tour and they were great.

I was just thinking I should dig this out again after Stylus closing made me go through the archives and I read the Swygart review of it. I remember my favourites (and I loved the whole album) being Killing The Bland, Deanshanger and Autocade, but I'll have to give it another listen before voting.

"great album, not a great live band tho'"

not according to what i've seen in youtube.
i think they are known for legendary live shows, where Linda and Mick were going insane on stage together.

Zeno, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

Autocade. Like Stereolab with balls.

What ever happened to Linda? Beautiful voice.

Mr. Odd, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

i guess Autocade is kind of the boring answer, but the boring answer is usually boring 'cos it's right.

i remember trying to buy the Killing The Bland 7" single and the guy at the counter insisting it was 10 quid, 10.49 to be precise, so i went up the road to HMV and bought it for 99p. if i'm at an especially slow party i like to liven things up with this reminisence.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

"Autocade" is a bit of a perverse answer really.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

"What ever happened to Linda? Beautiful voice"

"As of 2005, Mick Derrick is working as an archaeologist in Norway, Pat Marsden lives in nearby Denmark, drummer Tim plays in MJ Hibbett & The Validators, while Linda Steelyard is a reporter for the Leicester Mercury. David Jeffreys is a professor of art at Savannah College of Art and Design."

"killing the bland" is indeed one of the highlights of this record, with it's poppy buzzcocks vibe but, the best song in "italian flag" has to be slash/oblique or deanshanger: the bombastic, larger than life production, the energy, the DRUMMING!!

Zeno, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

Listening again I'm quite tempted by slash/oblique too. I'd forgotten most of the titles, to be honest.

Love the lyrics booklet with Linda at one end and Scottish Mick at the other.

Sometimes I wonder what the "one" in "the music was crap / except one" refers to.

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

'Deanshanger' is fucking great. Tim is/was an amazing drummer, aye.

Mister Craig, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

xpost - the fall?? always wondered about that line too

Jena, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

i thought about the fall too on that line.(than again "gdansk was crap, warsaw was crap"?!)
i like the end of the song, with the strong irony:

"do you remember the nineteen eighties... the music was crap the hair was crap the everythin' was crap...a sad period in the twentieth centuries history... Am glad it's all over, wrapped in a box and put under the bed"

as if on the other decades the world was perfect.
