this is NOT dilla right?

winston, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

it is a "mash-up" of dilla and pet sounds

I know knee-jerk is to hate this kinda "I AM A BIG DEAL LOOK" shit by default, but I'm currus how it is.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 02:54 (eighteen years ago)

Just happy that Brian Wilson isn't alive to see this.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

I love the Beach Boys and Jay Dee! Downloading excitedly (and suspiciously).

polyphonic, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm, pretty underwhelming.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

this is nice. i don't really know pet sounds, though.

Jordan, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

only on song 3 and it's surprisingly better than i was expecting. it's not a mashup album at all. it's just detroit styled beats sampling pet sounds. no rapping over it (so far). it makes tons of sense. people sample soft pop and psych records all the time. and the samples are pretty chopped so it doesn't really sound like pet sounds until he throws in vocal snippets.

hecka stupid

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

vahid, hecka surprised you don't like this at all.

jaxon, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

It barely incorporates Pet Sounds, and even when it does, the samples lack much in the way of imagination or reconceptualization. And even if I ignore all of that, it just doesn't sound like a very good Jay Dee album.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

doesn't sound at all like jay dee to me

jaxon, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

but as a beat tape, it's pretty solid. i'm removing myself from the title and just listening to the music.

jaxon, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

some of the drums sound pretty jay deeish? but i guess that's pretty easy to cop these days

Jordan, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

I think maybe I'd like it as a beat tape more if it didn't source so exclusively from two artists I'm so familiar with.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

finally hearing this

doesn't sound at all like jay dee to me

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

i think this is actually pretty good.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 15 November 2007 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

from that myspace page:

Write up about pet sounds in the key of dee on exclaim.ca is niice, and fully appreciated - BUT - it got one thing wrong:

"With beats taken from Jay Dee's massive collection..." ..........................................NO DILLA DRUMS USED

easy

braveclub, Thursday, 15 November 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

but as a beat tape, it's pretty solid. i'm removing myself from the title and just listening to the music.
