trus'me - working nights - fat city
FCLP 026 - uk2lp

1. "Introduction"
2. "Drilling"
3. "At The Disco"
4. "Working Nights"
5. "Shake A Body"
6. "W.A.R."
7. "Narda"
8. "Trus'us"

Debut album from Manchester's latest production prodigy Trus’me. This 8 track set features three of the hard to find Love4Music black label 12"s that shot Trusme to notoriety in early 2007, garnering massive support from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Karizma, Carl Craig, Benji B, Mad Mats, Jazzanova and many many more... Five previously unreleased gems sit alongside firm favourites such as 'W.A.R.', 'At the Disco' and a new version of the house behemoth 'Nards', entitled 'Narda'. Five new tracks cover many styles from soulful house, disco to afro beat and twisted funk. Note! The first initial pressing on this vinyl edition will be limited to a 1000 copies & plans to repress are yet unclear, so preorder if interested! Out half November. Big Tip!

just ordered a copy because i love the KDJ meets Black Cock sound, but if i already have two of the three 12"s is this going to be a dud?

gr8080, Friday, 16 November 2007 09:01 (eighteen years ago)

the samples of this that i've just listened to are awesome. never heard of it before!

haitch, Saturday, 17 November 2007 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

ok, the non-12" tracks are all pretty good.

listened to this for the first time late friday night when my local cable channel was airing a late 70's episode of Soul Train. Withe the tv volume down, it made a perfect accompaniment.

great record.

gr8080, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

lol torrent search craig david trust me

jergïns, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 03:51 (eighteen years ago)

I think I need this, but fear it could be way too difficult to track down on vinyl in the US. Anyone seen this in US shops?

Romeo Jones, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, if you find it let me know too Romeo. I have to say that in theory this stuff is right up my alley, and "Nards", "Good God", and "Browns" pretty much hit the spot, but still didn't absolutely MOVE me in the way I wanted/expected them to. But "W.A.R.", while doing roughly the same thing as the others, is absolutely masterful.

matt2, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

W.A.R. is probably my least favorite!

gr8080, Thursday, 6 December 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

Some of the transitions and tempo changes in "W.A.R." are a little rough, but hearing Marvin speak about making "What's Going On" and all of his sweet cooing really just makes the track for me.

matt2, Thursday, 6 December 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

this is a really great album and more people should hear it.

gr8080, Friday, 7 December 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

guy that works at amoeba: can you get this?

winston, Friday, 7 December 2007 03:40 (eighteen years ago)

i thought "nards" was really good and the second single is growing on me. it's a bit 'music about music' which i like.

tricky, Friday, 7 December 2007 03:55 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

i opened my set last night with the title track.

sounds rad on a big system.

gr8080, Saturday, 29 December 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

Still can't find a place to buy this in the US. I really, really want it.

matt2, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

xpost to winston -

been working on getting this in the shop for 2/3 weeks now - got one of my regular distro's to contact Fat City and they said they've sold out and are repressing asap. so it shouldn't be too much longer...

BATTAGS, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

I finally caved and downloaded this and my, oh, my I never expected it to be so good. It somehow brings together seemingly everything I'm interested in right now and creates a gorgeous melange of it all. Really, really impressed. The singles didn't prepare me for how much I like this.

matt2, Thursday, 3 January 2008 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

are you totally against mailorder from overseas? piccadilly still has it

gr8080, Thursday, 3 January 2008 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, I'm not totally against it. It looks like it would be about $33 or $34 after shipping for the 2xLP, though. Surely someone over here will get it in.

matt2, Thursday, 3 January 2008 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

dont forget:

Orders outside the EU receive a 17.5% discount.

gr8080, Thursday, 3 January 2008 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

Damn! I didn't see that.

matt2, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

i'll wait

winston, Friday, 4 January 2008 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

Got this finally. pretty great stuff. "W.A.R" isn't doing much for me and I wish "At The Disco" was twice as long, but overall ... it's damn good. Now I just have to decide if I need any of the 12"s.

Romeo Jones, Monday, 7 January 2008 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

b-side on "at the disco" is croosh

gr8080, Monday, 7 January 2008 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 January 2008 05:00 (eighteen years ago)

anyway cosign the greatness of this

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 January 2008 05:01 (eighteen years ago)

i just want to let everyone know that i'm totally into this and loving it and it's great. in case you were wondering where i stood on this record

jergïns, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 07:47 (eighteen years ago)

also it
s complicated, yeah? i mean, there's some corny stuff and some ill-advised samples but still on balance shit works. the first third of 'war' is a wonderful thing. someone needs to loop that before the bad piano comes in and just go with it

jergïns, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 07:49 (eighteen years ago)

all of "w.a.r" + the 4 or so minutes before "narda" picks up are kinda zzzz but the rest is fantastic

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 January 2008 07:50 (eighteen years ago)

love how all over the place it is

jergïns, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 07:51 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i'm pretty much mesmerized by 'drilling,' 'working nights' and 'shakea body' (fela!) on this + many other good moments. i should u buy this lol. so good.

strgn, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 07:54 (eighteen years ago)

eh everytime i hear a sample im like oh this is cool and then it's gone. i don't really mind it tho bcuz i'm assuming it's there to be the love/hate song and i hate it so whatever.

not to mention that the actual music on this is so good it seems like a pain to sit through dude messing around

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 January 2008 07:56 (eighteen years ago)

the 4 or so minutes before "narda" picks up are kinda zzzz but the rest is fantastic

-- J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 January 2008 07:50 (20 minutes ago) Link

missing the point of narda!!! epic build dude. you can always mix right into the groove if you prefer

deej, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 08:11 (eighteen years ago)

i guess. i would be much more patient with the idea of epic build if it wasn't preceded by 'war' bcuz it basically equals 15ish minutes of waiting for epic build in my world.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 January 2008 08:18 (eighteen years ago)

i would be much more patient with the idea of epic build

w/r/t this song i should say

three weeks pass...

if people are still looking, other music has this in their newest update.

mizzell, Thursday, 14 February 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

not feeling it.

pipecock, Thursday, 14 February 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

i've only heard 'nard's' which everyone was banging on about but ^^. pretty uninspired. would've sounded old in the late 90s which isn't necessarily a gripe but in this case is.

or something, Thursday, 14 February 2008 23:56 (seventeen years ago)

i still like this. not fresh but he is good at cultivating mood

deej, Thursday, 14 February 2008 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

not fresh?

I disagree, but I also don't care about "fresh-ness" so much.

Romeo Jones, Friday, 15 February 2008 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

i dont care about freshness either! i just mean that its not, like, invigoratingly new sounding

deej, Friday, 15 February 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)

trus'me ain't fresh azimiz

J0rdan S., Friday, 15 February 2008 03:18 (seventeen years ago)

"pipecock (or anyone else), what other artists do you think Trusme sounds like? I'm asking in all seriousness, because I'd like to hear more stuff like this.

Of course, Moodymann seems to be the big one, but what else? Daniel Wangs's early stuff"

those ones are obvious. Theo Parrish's early denser sample based shit is another. ditto for rick wilhite. pepe braddock's earlier shit is another. i guess the problem for me with records like these is that these guys all had such distinct style and flair for what they did, Trus'Me just seems to be using a color by numbers approach to that kind of style of music. there have even been some better knockoffs out there that i think are much more interesting than this guy.

it may be obvious, but if you dont have it you need to get the more recent 3 Chairs album. it pisses all over this one from a great height and bangs out the club, but is also perfect for home and car listening. it's this style of music, but taken an extra couple of steps.

pipecock, Saturday, 16 February 2008 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, I've got that 3 Chairs album, and, while I like it a lot, I think I might like this Trusme LP even better. Similar atmosphere, but Trusme is WAY more sample-based (but both albums are a bit uneven). For me, the incorporation of live musicians and such is taking "an extra couple of steps," as you say, but not always in the right direction. For instance, I'd much rather listen to 90s-2002 Moodymann than his newer stuff.

And Theo Parrish has always been hit-or-miss with me. Will have to check out more Rick Wilhite and Pepe Braddock though.

Romeo Jones, Saturday, 16 February 2008 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

what i like about how they add live stuff to the mix is that it is not done in a noodly "let's get studio musicians in to make us sound corny" manner at all. its just doods who understand what dance music is about jamming and taking it deeper as a result.

if you like the sample based stuff, check the first 3 Chairs album if you can find it. and basically anything by Norm Talley is worth checking as well. i think youll love Pepe Braddock, basically everything the guy did before the last couple of records is pure genius sampling business.

pipecock, Sunday, 17 February 2008 05:18 (seventeen years ago)

shock, horror, i agree with pipecock on this one

i mean it's pretty good, there's plenty of us house things from the last 10 years that bump along in more or less a similar vein, i'm thinking any number of gene farris or roy davis jr tracks ... except i guess these are a bit slower?

the thing is that there's something very hamfisted and unfunky about a lot of it. some of the worst things (like "at the disco") remind me uncomfortably of grand central records (vis a vis US hip-hop), the way they're basically aping an american thing that they might have authentic respect for and yet no real idea how to pull off.

like i'm listening to "drilling" and this just sounds like corny shit for british dudes named fraser who drink red stripe and wear pumas and denim jackets

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 18 February 2008 06:17 (seventeen years ago)

i know i've been pretty good for a while about not dissing the european brothers but just know that i'm struggling with real disappointment here, i was led to believe this was something on par with moodymann and it's not even andres, it's not even amp fiddler!

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 18 February 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

it's all very gilles peterson

http://www.internetdj.com/images/articles/gpinthehousealbum.jpg

^^ i mean, check out gilles peterson

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 18 February 2008 06:38 (seventeen years ago)

gilles actually has passable taste (disc 2 of that has everything from weldon irvine to taste of honey to willie hutch to clyde alexander, in other words it could be kenny dope or dimitri or any other tasteful disco dj ... disc one, not so much)

but the pose! look at that pose!

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 18 February 2008 06:41 (seventeen years ago)

also the stylistic range here is much wider than just moodymann

"narda" = early idjuts on glasgow underground or noid

"working nights" = black science orchestra or faze action or what have you on nuphonic

"shakeabody" = all those random dudes on labels like afro art or discfunction or tru thoughts doing midtempo afrobeat tracks

"war" = ok this sorta sounds like theo parrish

"don't you know" = all of that weird techno-not-techno stuff from the netherlands on labels like delsin and rushhour

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 18 February 2008 06:56 (seventeen years ago)

also i am pretty sure that the first sample on the album is the last track from this (itunes link)

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 18 February 2008 07:06 (seventeen years ago)

whoops sorry, wrong link

here it is, itunes again

so its kind of like being really into roots manuva as a rap fan?

Ding!

Andy K, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

The epitome of Euro Moodymann jacking is, unless I am mistaken, Henrik Schwarz's Chicago (which I loved from the first listen).

Andy K, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

haha i still rock "Join the Dots"

deej, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

trus'me, drumming for flea and anthony kiedis

deej, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

Theo Parrish's early denser sample based shit is another.

Yes. Even the crudest/earliest Theo, like Lake Shore Drive, moves me far more than any of the Trus'me tracks.

I do not hate the stuff or anything. It's the "OK, uh, next" reflex.

Andy K, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

ha lake shore drive is one of my favorite tracks of his ... !

deej, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

(Haha RM scored major points by including Freeez and Juicy on his Badmeaninggood [or whatever] comp.)

Andy K, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not so sure I still literally rock "Join the Dots" (probably haven't heard it in five years), but it was most certainly the jam at my college radio station and I was not at all opposed to that.

My excitement for this has definitely waned (and not just because of the meh reaction by many esteemed voices here). I haven't found myself going back to it much. But while I understand all of the "it's just nothing special" reactions, it definitely still hits a spot for me. And while Moodymann and Theo would be two of my top five artists if such a list needed to exist, this never really evokes either of them for me (see vahid's analysis above). Not nearly as much as someone like Soulphiction (I mentioned that somewhere else here in a discussion of Trus'me I believe) or early Henrik Schwarz. Maybe the meh reaction is because this isn't really a strong form of anything in particular, just a smooth-rolling, easy-listening, never-quite-truly-funky album of edits essentially. Admittedly it doesn't get as body-shakingly, goddamn-I-can't-not-dance-to-this funky as the best Moodymann or as head-noddingly pounding as the best Theo, but it still does something I like. Perhaps he hasn't produced anything to really establish himself as an individual producer yet ("Nards/a" has a nice build-up, I still really like "W.A.R." although that may just be that I can't dislike Marvin), but maybe that moment is to come. Or maybe I don't really like this all that much.

Regardless, this quote on his myspace page is sacrilege and may be grounds enough to dismiss him: “Better than KDJ at his best” (Piccadilly Records)

matt2, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

here's another thing: if i'm not mistaken, i already *have* re-edits of just about every track on this 2LP.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

the last thing i need is another take on "trinidad" or "dance freak"

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

i do like "introduction" a lot - sort of a strange blend of beat music and 70s jazz, reminds me in a way of reflection (the japanese group on clear records) or some of the spaciest as one or madlib material. or a more fleshed-out ammoncontact or hu vibrational. i wish he'd stuck with that style a bit, it'd be an interesting thing to develop, more interesting than trying to be the DJ shadow of disco edits or whatever.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)

and i hear matt2 entirely, i mean, i don't even know why trus'me would try his hand at "never let you go" ... it just makes you wish you were listening to ugly edit 1.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

"Regardless, this quote on his myspace page is sacrilege and may be grounds enough to dismiss him: “Better than KDJ at his best” (Piccadilly Records)

-- matt2"

yeah, i saw that the other day and i threw up in my mouth a little bit. dood should have regulated on those fools for suggesting such a thing.

pipecock, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

the exclusive track from the gilles peterson comp is actually really ill. not so much moodymann, more of a dixon / henrik schwarz / trickski sort of vibe, very techy and european with de rigeur "deep" elements.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 21 February 2008 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't heard the GP comp track, so I'm not sure if it's anything like the last half of "W.A.R.", but I think the last half of that presents potentially interesting ideas. It's probably my favorite five minutes of the album. But maybe that's because that part really could be Moodymann.

matt2, Thursday, 21 February 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, oops the GP track up on his myspace. I think it is kinda like the last half of "W.A.R." except a bit more techy as you say vahid.

The interesting thing, looking at his fliers, is that he has definitely made some in-roads with a fair number of the Detroiters. I mean he's hosted nights with Juan Atkins, Moodymann, and has one coming up with Andres. Also, the next release on his Prime Numbers label is Reggie Dokes. So he seems to not only emulate these folks, but (I'm assuming) he seems to have established something of a relationship with them. Of course, that only makes the posting of that Piccadilly quote even more dumbfounding.

matt2, Thursday, 21 February 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

that's funny, i listened to the album again and i couldn't find whatever it was that i thought was "never let you go". maybe i confused it w/ the piano line theo used for "took me all the way back". anyway, pretty shameless rip.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 21 February 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

what ruins "drilling" is the bassline. the track is otherwise completely awesome, but the bassline is so unnecessary and so goofy, it's got that sense of "forced fun" that reminds me of the worst aspects of big beat. it's that worrying trend of electronic artists not trusting the space in their music, and needing to fill it up w/ all sorts of extra crap. what's next, sia furler on vocals?

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 21 February 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

I completely hear you vahid. And as for summoning the ghosts of big beat, is there any chance the Norm Cook credited with drums on several of the tracks (http://www.discogs.com/release/1140703) is indeed Norman Cook? I wondered that from the first time I saw it.

matt2, Thursday, 21 February 2008 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

really don't understand why everyone's knocking this one... it's not as good as kdj or anything but i don't see how omar s or anything is significantly better.

here's another thing: if i'm not mistaken, i already *have* re-edits of just about every track on this 2LP.

i don't!!

winston, Friday, 21 March 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

So I finally got this grady.

I like it a lot. I don't think it's better than moodymann, but it doesn't strike me as "inferior moodymann" either. More like a mustier Faze Action. And I can only play Plans & Designs and Moving Cities so much (my boyfriend actually complained "that again?!?" when I put n Moving Cities last night).

Tim F, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 09:38 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

sometimes it's real hot outside, and i had a long trying week, and maybe i haven't had enough to eat and my hands and feet feel dirty and i have a headache. and maybe i could put steve reid or bobby hutcherson or sun ra or something like that on the stereo but i just end up putting on "kind of blue" or grant green instead, or maybe if i pick sun ra it's something mild like "cosmic tones ..." instead of "heliocentric worlds ..."

today is kinda like that ... reached for moodymann but changed my mind and put on trus'me instead.

No end in sight for the Moodymann comparisons. On this week's Beats In Space, Trusme says Amp Fiddler, Pirahnahead, and Paul Randolph will be appearing on his forthcoming album due in September.
