What is Hip-Hop?

I asked some students once and they laughed at me and said "it is a lifestyle, not a type of music."

------

Here are a couple of examples:

LL Cool J- "Around the Way Girl"
Neneh Cherry- "Buffalo Stance" (I like her necklace.)
Malcolm-Jamal Warner & Carl Anthony Payne II- "Shakespere Freestyle" (from The Cosby Show)

I like to imagine Russell Simmons suddenly appearing on this forum, answering questions like Albini on that poker message board.

haha, the miami vice-lovin' dude that john d quoted above also admitted to liking some jay-z songs. which makes some sense -- i would think that randroids who like rap would like jay-z and others who are into conspicuous displays of wealth. if they don't squint their ears too hard or dig too deep into certain rappers' back catalogues, i can definitely see an attraction (e.g., if they took jay-z strictly on the surface & the beats and paid no mind at all to his ambivalence and doubts about his wealth/status, etc. [basically, they don't let anything offa reasonable doubt really sink in]).

but i'm not a randroid, so what do i know?!?

"A waltz with brutal lyrics could be just as evil as some contemporary pop music."

Most famous rappers have done quite well from an objectivist point of view, considering they have made themselves a lot of money.
