JN$OT, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Sonic Youth then and still would, even though I prefer Rather Ripped.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Same here (except the preferring Rather Ripped part).

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

Typically, I went for the boring old '60s fart--the Geir pick, if you will.

JN$OT, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Franz Ferdinand, ahead of my favorite Wilco album, Kanye, and the Arcade Fire. The Usher album is coincidentally in the mail to me, so I may revise my view. It's weird to me how many of these albums still seem new: I guess it's because it's when new music started piling up for me, so that I haven't yet listened to the Bjork album or the AC Newman (I imagine I never will listen to the latter). I've never even listened to Sonic Nurse---I love Murray Street so much that I haven't wanted to stray from it. Maybe I will.

Euler, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

You. Really. Need. To. Hear. It. Now!

JN$OT, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm...I've heard less of these than I would like. Kanye, Ghostface, Madvillian or Usher could get my vote.

The Reverend, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

Nellie McKay, but I have a sneaky suspicion U2 or Green Day might win by a large margin.

da croupier, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

M.I.A. wasn't M.I.A. So my vote goes to the ugly, brutal, supposedly-hipper-than-Youssou-N'Dour Piracy Funds Terrorism Volume 1 (please - I'm too fragile for a volume 2).

M.I.A.:

Rio Baile Funk: Favela Booty Beats - I played this at a dance party and some revelers were stunned. I guess they thought they were going to get...well, what? Tropicalia? Still, galloping around to the irritating "Pocotocopo" lifted my ass into the stratosphere.

Caetano Veloso: A Foreign Sound - Gawd, I hope they didn't think they were getting this - Tropicalia dinner music for people who top ten Piracy Funds Terrorism Volume 1.

Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster - "Please introduce yourself to America's first songwriter," says this tribute album. Emphasis on "please."

Grandaddy: Below The Radio - Best indie rock mix tape ever withMeat Puppets II as the spiritual coordinate.

Diplo: Favela on Blast: Rio Baile Funk 04 - I'm a very trendy guy.

Todd Snider: East Nashville Skyline - America's best singer-songwriter of the 21st century. And he seems to be handling it better than Stephen Foster.

The Soft Pink Truth: Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Soft Pink Truth? - Answer: yes. Most homosexual album of the year.

Reissue of the year:

The Homosexuals: The Homosexuals' CD - Notice that this is NOT the three-disc horror Astral Glamour but rather the one-disc distillation of these formerly shadowy dub punks. Do NOT let people tell you need Astral Glamour unless you have a very high tolerance for tuneless caterwaul. Or one-minute "pop" songs consisting of tossed-off folk guitar with voice.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't hear until 2005 but prolly would've top tenned: Madvillainy

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

Favorite missing albums of '04: Gwen Stefani, Love Angel Music Baby; Masta Killa, No Said Date; Daddy Yankee, Barrio Fino

The Reverend, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

i voted madvillainy, it was between that and ghost

deej, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

Kanye! My enthusiasm would wane the next year.

dr. phil, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

good year.

1. kanye
2. interpol
3. ghost
4. franz
5. fiery furnaces

J0rdan S., Monday, 19 November 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

can't wait for big & rich to win by 22 votes.

J0rdan S., Monday, 19 November 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, if they did it wouldn't be the end of the world.

dr. phil, Monday, 19 November 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

They deserve to.

My ballot that year; haven't changed my mind much since, I don't think:

1 Big & Rich Horse of a Different Color

2 Monster Records: The Seventies Sampler
Monster
points: 15
3 M.I.A./Diplo Piracy Funds Terrorism Volume 1
no label

xhuxk, Monday, 19 November 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

I went with Sonic Youth. I was disappointed with Rather Ripped, but Sonic Nurse is right up there with Murray Street as one of the best Sonic Youth albums. A close second for me was MIA/Diplo.

Dan S, Monday, 19 November 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

Big & Rich can't possibly win, guys. But it would be cool if they did.

xp (haha...)

JN$OT, Monday, 19 November 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

I still love The Streets. I'm sad that nobody else seems to anymore.

The guy who just votes in polls, Monday, 19 November 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

Miccio much more OTM than Jordan S. re: poll-rigging.

The Reverend, Monday, 19 November 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

As only the man who originated the "Go Hinder!" campaign last year could be, natch.

JN$OT, Monday, 19 November 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

Anything apart from Brian Wilson.

Billy Dods, Monday, 19 November 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

i will vote for the streets

jamz, Monday, 19 November 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

My pick is the Joanna Newsom, but I also like the Brian Wilson, Nellie McKay, MIA, Devendra Banhart, Sonic Youth, Black Keys, and A.C. Newman.

o. nate, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

Sonic Youth, then and now. (This was the first year I voted in P&J.)

I believe Junior Boys was #41, btw.

jaymc, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

can't wait for big & rich to win by 22 votes.

You haven't been on ILX long enough.

jaymc, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

christ how the fuck did u2 make the pazz'n'jop top ten with THAT album.

da croupier, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

though there's actually a lot of "THAT album?" on the list.

da croupier, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

And Green Day, too! Maybe voters were still sore over the Nov. elections?

JN$OT, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

at least green day was at their commercial peak since Dookie! There's SOME logic there. This was just a gaudy turd after the "comeback" album.

da croupier, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

on both albums my favorite song was the nonsensical rave-up. "Vertigo" sounds like Enrique Iglesias leading R.E.M. circa Monster. I can get behind that.

da croupier, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

both U2 albums, I mean.

da croupier, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

did the entire Rolling Stone staff vote for Green Day, U2, and Loretta Lynn?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

Every U2 album in the past 20 years has made P&J, and the only ones that missed the top ten were the genuine fiascos (Pop and Rattle And Hum).

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

Can't wait for Danger Mouse's How To Dismantle A Heart-Shaped Grenade

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

Every U2 album in the past 20 years has made P&J, and the only ones that missed the top ten were the genuine fiascos (Pop and Rattle And Hum).

I guess this was really the first Just Another U2 Album since October. Ugh.

da croupier, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

pop and r&h are better than their last two imo

omar little, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

Loretta Lynn received the "gosh darn it, there's no White Stripes album to vote for this year!" award, methinks. Still a really good record, tho.

xp's galore

JN$OT, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I pretty much agree, just saying those are the 2 big PR disasters/backlash moments of their career. They didn't have to go away and dream it all up again after Atomic Bomb. (xpost)

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

This helped too.

(xpost)

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

Please erase U2 from history.

The Reverend, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

Not to mention this:

JN$OT, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

For some reason I clicked on that expecting to see How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb at the top. I feel...relieved.

The Reverend, Monday, 19 November 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

Weird. Stylus awarded the U2 record a C, but Metacritic give it 60 points? How the hell does that work out? Shouldn't it have been 50 points at the most?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

Who the fuck is A.C. Newman????

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

God...of sorts. Not on this record, though.

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

Brain behind New Pornographers.

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

Hahahah--man, I don't even need to check the results anymore; I can tell what's up just by reading the first couple of post-ILX System remarks. Nice to see that our resident jokerz weren't quite of one mind this time out, tho--xhuxk will be happy that they threw a few votes to B&R. Maybe. Still, I gotta say that it's probably not as "funny" as the last couple of landslide wins were. C'mon, guyz--surely can do better than a token New Pornographer!?!

JN$OT, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 08:28 (eighteen years ago)

surely you, that iz.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 08:30 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, nice to see Egypt get a couple of votes, too. Was that partly your doing, Matt?

JN$OT, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 08:32 (eighteen years ago)

I just figured the B&R votes were legit.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

Me too -- maybe I was just being optimistic. JN$OT, what makes you so sure some B&R votes were jokes?

With AC Newman, I had no frigging idea, though.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I don't know--I'm sure a couple of them are legit, but five votes seem a bit much for ILM.

Also, this:

can't wait for big & rich to win by 22 votes.

jaymc, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

Terrific thread, but I don't think any of those guys voted here (other than Chuck, of course).

JN$OT, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

And Matos--who voted for SY.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

I was surprised nobody voted for Blueberry Boat. Isn't that an ILM favorite?

The guy who just votes in polls, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

And Joanna, too.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

I did vote for Joanna - or thought I did anyway. Something fishy in the state of Denmark?

o. nate, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

A.C. Newman does have one very good track on it - "On the Table".

o. nate, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

i didn't actually think big & rich was going to win, i was just making a joke about how the darkness won the other poll by a billion votes, so i was looking for a random outsider album in the bottom 5 but i forgot that ppl on here actually like big & rich.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 21 November 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

i think a lot of ppl on here forgot they actually liked big & rich at one point too

chaki, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

there's five or so songs on that album that are CLASSIC but some of the quirk is just quirk and the jesus songs don't do anything for me.
