Voted "Sylvia". The title track may be better, but will probably have lots of votes anyway.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

Naah, it won't win.

Mark G, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

it's got mine, certainly. probably the best song they ever did. and probably their best album.

after that ... "glory days", probably. or one of the last two.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

"Seductive Barry" -- I'm a sucker for those Jarvis spoken word pieces.

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

like a friend doesn't count, otherwise it's by far the best track here. i choose a little (arse) soul

electricsound, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

"Dishes".

Simon H., Tuesday, 20 November 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

Last two are indeed good, and This Is Hardcore shines, but c'mon, Seductive Barry is a fucking sexscape. I coined that word a few years ago with specific reference to this song, but haven't really found much else it could apply to, with the curious, and entirely relevant, exception of Barry Adamson, who collaborated with Jarvis Cocker and who is almost certainly the titular figure. Most reviewers think it's a Barry White reference. They're wrong.

"Party Hard" has nearly literally been a soundtrack to my life, these last six months. Gets my vote.

There's a thread here for "Party Hard", and my contribution to it is worthy, I think. I'm not digging it up, though.

andi, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

once again: i really would urge anyone who hasn't got it already to get hold of that two-disc peel sessions and live shit thing that came out earlier this year (or was it late last year?) 'cos the live version of the title track is glorious, and has possibly jarv's most intense vocal performance evah.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

ok, I resurrected that word.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

Many great songs. But the best thing about TIH has to be the cover (& arwork).

daavid, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

THE LAST ONE, BECAUSE THEN IT IS OVER.

ian, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

it takes a while, but yes, I guess you're right

I'll have to listen to this before voting but will probably go with Dishes.

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

Where's the love for Help the Aged?

iago g., Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

A Little Soul

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

yay

HI DERE, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Naah, it won't win.

It did, apparently....

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

to all the lurkers who voted for 'help the aged', which is a decent song but nothing special, please get your ears syringed.

also, further proof that 'i'm a man' is the most pointless song pulp ever recorded.

Just got offed, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

"Help The Aged" is OK. No my fave song off the album, but still a nice song with a great chorus.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

Top 4 songs OTM.

Fuck "Dishes" tho.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

The top 5 are probably my own top 5, but in the wrong order. 'Help The Aged' DOES have an awesome chorus, yeah, but it's nowhere near as sublime an experience as Seductive Barry, This Is Hardcore, or even The Fear.

Just got offed, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

'A Little Soul' is the most overrated Pulp song, period. Ugh. The band are ALWAYS better when they're innovating.

Just got offed, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

pulp and innovation aren't exactly getting mad rutty with any regularity

electricsound, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

that's what i call a result.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 29 November 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

xpost: yeah, but 'a little soul' doesn't even try.

I just heard Earl Brutus' 'Come Taste My Mind' for the first time and GUESS WHAT 'PARTY HARD' IS AN INFERIOR RIP-OFF OF?

Just got offed, Thursday, 29 November 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

oh wait i think 'Party Hard' may have come out a couple of months beforehand *gulps*

Just got offed, Thursday, 29 November 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

really? i thought earl brutus were long gone by then

electricsound, Thursday, 29 November 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

seems not. still releasing new stuff as late as '99 apparently.

Just got offed, Thursday, 29 November 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

I just heard Earl Brutus' 'Come Taste My Mind' for the first time

WELCOME TO THE BROTHERHOOD, LOUIS.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

just doing our annual stock-check at the radio station and i took the opportunity to copy a few of their singles (plus a load of other stuff), knowing how well-loved they are on ilx. the whole 'come taste my mind' ep is wonderful, and 'life's too long' + 'SAS and the glam...' ain't bad either.

Just got offed, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

ho, fucking hell, dude, i'm missing a load of the EP tracks. i've never even heard some of them. any chance you can hook me up with whatever you've swiped?

grimly fiendish, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

full tracklists:

come taste my mind
superstar
nice man in a bubble
william, taste my mind

life's too long
life's too long (extended remix)

sas and the glam that goes with it
midland red
the scottish

anything you want, i'll send as an email attachment. :D

Just got offed, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

is it true they gigged with two guys at the front of the stage, doing nothing except drinking? if so, amazing.

Just got offed, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:19 (eighteen years ago)

one guy, but yes: absolutely true. better than that were the revolving petrol-station signs: the one reading PISS and OFF was replaced with something nicer at later gigs.

they were ... just awesome. first time i saw them was at the edinburgh venue in 1996 (i think), with my mates' band supporting: they pretty much cleared the place. by the end there was just me and my mate newcastle andy standing there going WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS AWESOMENESS? i love and adore them.

is it okay to bung me the whole lot? i've just sent you an e-mail through the webmail thingy with my address.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

official ILX earl brutus thread, as it were

if you ever come across the "universal plan" single, be checking out the B-side ("gypsy camp battle") 'cos it's one of the scariest pieces of synthpop ever made.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

whoa, nice! they seem like the kind of literate, brash, OTT rock experience you sadly see too little of nowadays.

i have a feeling that 'superstar', 'william, taste my mind' and 'the scottish' will send you into raptures.

Just got offed, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:29 (eighteen years ago)

:)

yeh: they managed to combine swaggering gang mentality with fuck-you intellectual superiority; a jaw-dropping understanding of the seventies aesthetic with glorious pop suss; and unashamed ugliness with a passionate sense of what was truly beautiful (and no, i'm really not exaggerating -- that's precisely what they were like).

there's a video for CTMM on youtube somewhere; or at least there was.

gonna go to bed but will get up tomorrow with GLEE ALL OVER MY PANTS face. you rule. thank you.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

hurrah!

Just got offed, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

in case you don't know, grimly: William Taste My Mind is a re-recording with William Reid

energy flash gordon, Friday, 30 November 2007 03:12 (eighteen years ago)

[mops up glee]

yeh, i've always wanted to hear it! hurrah. louis: you absolutely rule. thank you.
