POLL: Best 1970s Nigerian Band Name

All of the following acts are on the new Soundway compilation Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds & Nigerian Blues, which I got in today's mail. This poll has nothing to do with what the bands actually sound like; all votes should be based purely on the awesomeness of the band's name.

This deserves to be a six-way tie, at least.

bendy, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

Got this comp the other day too. Looks *great.*

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 November 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

Shadow Abraham With Mono Mono Friends

i have an mp3 of the funkees covering atomic rooster, that shit's crazy.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

amazing. I started to say that I'm torn between this one and this other one, but I'm torn between about a half dozen, as bendy says.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

Celestine Ukwu & His Philosophers National
The Nigerian Police Force Band
Popular Cooper & His All Beats Band
George Akaeze & His Augmented Hits
Shadow Abraham With Mono Mono Friends

How do I choose?

Matt #2, Thursday, 22 November 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)

The Nigerian Police Force Band

Matt #2, Thursday, 22 November 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)

Etubom Rex Williams & His Nigerian Artistes

I love this one, not only for its use of 'Artistes' (always a favorite), but 'Etubom' is such a fantastic first name. It's so rhythmic! And regal? Especially preceding 'Rex'.

G00blar, Thursday, 22 November 2007 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

The Semi Colon

If they're not covering "Psychotic Reaction", I want to know why.

Mark G, Thursday, 22 November 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

The half-formed erection, back passage

Sorry, as you were.

Mark G, Thursday, 22 November 2007 10:40 (eighteen years ago)

"This poll has nothing to do with what the bands actually sound like"

what should we do with all our knowledge now...

Zeno, Thursday, 22 November 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, man--great poll, Phil! Too many good ones to choose from really, but Celestine Ukwu & His Philosophers National would be the one I'd want to join, so they get the vote.

JN$OT, Thursday, 22 November 2007 11:05 (eighteen years ago)

Popular Cooper & His All Beats Band
.. ftw!

1) He's popular
2) All beats! No music? Geir must be lovvin it!

Mark G, Thursday, 22 November 2007 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

3) His band beats all!

Mark G, Thursday, 22 November 2007 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

Too many to choose from. This thread absolutely rules...

Daniel Giraffe, Thursday, 22 November 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

The actual MUSIC absolutely rules, I'm listening now.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 November 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

Can you get Miami Steve Van Zandt to add it to his canon that he and David Brooks are preparing for America's schools!

curmudgeon, Thursday, 22 November 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

Opotopo

Future ILX meme?

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 22 November 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

The Semi Colon sounds like a band that would do "ironic" covers. I think the Philosophers National take the cake here.

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 November 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

I'm digging "Dan Satch & His Atomic 8 Dance Band Of Aba." This seems to imply that there is an Atomic 8 Dance Band from somewhere other than Aba. I hope it is a franchise with different local owners.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 22 November 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

Release date?

Bobbi Peru, Thursday, 22 November 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

Out in the UK now, it seems. Amazon sez for the States it's Feb 8.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 November 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Reissue of 2008?

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 November 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

(Judging just by band names)

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 November 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

It's damn good music (just finished hearing the second disc) so yeah, it should be up there.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 November 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

Perfect companion peice for this sadly oop thing, I bet.

Oilyrags, Friday, 23 November 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

piece, even.

Oilyrags, Friday, 23 November 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

St. Augustine & His Rovers Dance Band is a great name. I don't get the Rovers part; it would be awesome if it were a reference to the Dominicans, which comes from the Latin Domini canus, the hounds of God.

Euler, Friday, 23 November 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 26 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

I know this is a poll based on a particular comp, but I'd consider voting for Chief Commander Ebeneezer Obey and his Inter-Reformers

Hurting 2, Monday, 26 November 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

Popular Cooper is about to live up to his name.

moley, Monday, 26 November 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

popular cooper & his all beats band 4ever

Jordan, Monday, 26 November 2007 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm, I would have hope for something slightly more "exotic" to vote for. Such as Ngugu Featuring Julius Ozokobompa and Nzaki Nakakomwambe or something like that.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 26 November 2007 11:38 (eighteen years ago)

C'mon! The Semi Colon? GIVE IT UP FOR THEM!!!!

Alex in NYC, Monday, 26 November 2007 12:10 (eighteen years ago)

Popular Cooper & His All Beats Band

This would be a thousand times cooler if it were all BEETS.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 26 November 2007 12:11 (eighteen years ago)

The Don Isaac Ezekiel Combination

strange and inventive expansion of "combo" into "combination" makes this one an easy winner for me. why have no ironic indie-rock bands thought of this yet?

fact checking cuz, Monday, 26 November 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

the lack of votes for the funkees is sad.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

Melody Maestros robbed.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:04 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm very disappointed nobody voted for the Funkees or Bola Johnson & His Easy Life Top Beats.

unperson, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

twelve years pass...

love this comp, love the names of the bands on the comp, love how this track in particular makes me wonder if they were actually cops or just twenty-year-old nigerian pranksters taking the piss. they don't exactly have their own wikipedia page to verify these informations
