What do you think of them?
They are one of my favorite Norwegian bands. Gaahl seems like an intelligent and charismatic creature.
And when they play it right, they can be genuinely frightening.

Peep this interview with Gaahl. You won't be disappointed.

I have Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam on my computer. I haven't listened to it much, but "White Seed" rocks; John D recommended me that particular song, and it certainly hasn't disappointed. I'll go back to the record; I need to work out my year's top 20 (this is the first time I can ever do this with integrity) and who knows, it might make the cut!
As I type, "Carving A Giant" becomes massively awesome. This will definitely get a proper going-over.
― Just got offed, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:29 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam is definitely my favorite.
Watch that interview!
― roxymuzak, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:30 (eighteen years ago)
I just did! Wow! I did NOT see that coming. Dude has the most amazingly deep, compelling voice, and even that's got nothing on his stare. He seems to have found an amazing concordance with himself, even as he fights whatever it is he's fighting (my guesses: Judeo-Christian-Islamic religion, lack of integrity or self-discipline). Leading the documentary-makers to that isolated wooden hut = mega awesome. If I was one of them I'd feel fucking privileged, not to mention overwhelmed.
― Just got offed, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:45 (eighteen years ago)
(turns out the record was released last year, but i'll still give it a go.)
― Just got offed, Thursday, 22 November 2007 04:47 (eighteen years ago)
Whaddya mean, "still"?
― roxymuzak, Thursday, 22 November 2007 05:30 (eighteen years ago)
He's a classic narcissist - but still a classic.
― moley, Thursday, 22 November 2007 05:32 (eighteen years ago)
Gaahl is a great great great vocalist (do NOT pass over the Trelldom records which more than match whatever he has done with Gorgoroth). However, nothing beats "Under The Sign Of Hell" - with that incredible "up-close" sound, like listening to your own body being smashed to pieces with baseball bats. Unfortunately it's the last consistently great Gorgoroth album - there've been moments of greatness on every album but somehow they cannot let the "we'll fuck you up...BADLY" feeling last for a full album anymore.
― Siegbran, Friday, 23 November 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)
These reviews say it all really
― Siegbran, Friday, 23 November 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)
I love his fascist cliff notes Nietzsche ideology.
― filthy dylan, Friday, 23 November 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)
that interview! wow...
also, sounds like this could be the first non-cringeworthy black metal vocals I'm going to encounter (been trying out some for the last couple of days, guided by some threads here and some lists on amazon & rateyourmusic and I found some stuff I almost love, except the vocals, that are, to me, for now, mostly, well, unfortunate & ridiculously cartoony yelps)
― StanM, Friday, 23 November 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)
is the new Trelldom worth hearing?
― J0hn D., Friday, 23 November 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

― roxymuzak, Saturday, 24 November 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)
Haha, awesome!
I've just seen the infamous 'Satan' interview.
― Just got offed, Saturday, 24 November 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)
Get Gaahl's song SKULLFUCK of his Gaahlskagg project. The vocals he does in Gorgoroth are NOTHING compared to the insane shit he does there. I'm not joking. It's fucking scary.
Please listen. And the new Trelldom is not as good as the old.
― MRZBW, Saturday, 24 November 2007 05:15 (eighteen years ago)
I am downloading it right now!
― roxymuzak, Saturday, 24 November 2007 05:25 (eighteen years ago)
Good.. The whole song is good, but the scream thingy at 4:something is the good thing.
― MRZBW, Saturday, 24 November 2007 05:35 (eighteen years ago)
Gaahlskagg in general is really good.
I'm a necrophile maniac Ready to skullfuck you I'm waiting for your cold body I have the right passion too
The worst part is that I actually believe him.
― MRZBW, Saturday, 24 November 2007 05:42 (eighteen years ago)
i have now respect some for man's retoric but can he walk this walk as you say
it is not enough to to live in the cold you just embrace the cold as your inner fire. fire and ice is fire=ice. it as old as the mountans and the fossils of beasts.
but i say i like he made sissy-men hard of breathing on their climbing, that is true warriormanship

New trelldom is fantastic, top-3 metal album of the year, dont let anyone tell you otherwise.
― Siegbran, Saturday, 24 November 2007 08:32 (eighteen years ago)
No kidding S - thanks so much
― J0hn D., Saturday, 24 November 2007 10:45 (eighteen years ago)
Also, since nobody has mentioned it here yet, this still appears to be the current state of Gorgoroth
― Siegbran, Saturday, 24 November 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)
Man! Something tells me King's going down to Chinatown!
― roxymuzak, Saturday, 24 November 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)
Hey MRZBW -- thanks for the "Skullfuck" recommendation.
Holy. Shit!

Gaahl = women's fashion designer?
http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=101511
"We had hired models from DXD Models for a music video to be recorded in Bergenshallen. During the shoot, Dan suddenly appeared and became upset with us because one of his models had been served wine. That was the first time I met him," says Gaahl, or Kristian Espedal, which is his real name.
DeVero's rage, however, quickly turned to warmer feelings.
"Kristian and I developed a close relationship, and he often told me he had strong feelings for me," DeVero tells iBergen.no while Espedal silently drinks from his glass of wine.
― clotpoll, Friday, 25 July 2008 06:10 (seventeen years ago)
He's always silently drinking from a glass of red isn't he? I've never seen anyone do this so portentiously as Gaahl. In one interview, he's staring into the middle distance and is asked something like, 'What inspires you', and then, after a pause of just the right length, revealing innate theatrical timing, he says, without diverting his gaze, 'Satan'. He then slowly raises his glass of red to his lips and quaffs, and all you can hear is the creaking of his leather jacket.
BTW, the infamous interview where he appears to enter suspended animation for over a minute without blinking may well be due, not to infernal powers of self-control, but to the wearing of contact lenses.
King has said that he ``never really left`` Gorgoroth despite his brief official absence between 2006 and 2007, which according to Infernus happened due King's ``difficulties combining playing in a clear-cut Satanic metal band as Gorgoroth with the fact that he is full-time employed as a primary school teacher.``
― moley, Friday, 25 July 2008 06:58 (seventeen years ago)
Gold!
― moley, Friday, 25 July 2008 06:59 (seventeen years ago)
``difficulties combining playing in a clear-cut Satanic metal band as Gorgoroth with the fact that he is full-time employed as a primary school teacher.``
My vote for most awesome sentence in the history of existence.
Just watched the whole VBS True Black Metal Underground series. Wackiness.

― 8 HOOS Dog (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Friday, 24 October 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)
^^^this, but the greatest 2 minutes of television is "I don't think...you ask the right questions" *stare*
Also, re: women's fashion design,
“Those who know me in private didn’t think it was particularly strange. I do not care about what people in general think. It’s not as if I’m going to change as a person just because suddenly there are some dresses out in the world. Besides, I like confusing people,” Espedal says, grinning.
― 100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Sunday, 26 October 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)
This is also pretty funny and illustrates what you can expect to find in Gaahls basement apart from a few boxes of overstock haute couture:
In 2004 Gaahl went to court on charges of "performing torture lasting for several hours" on a 41 year old man after beating him senselessly for hours. He was sentenced to four months in jail and pay $30,000 to the victim.
― Siegbran, Sunday, 26 October 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)
He says that these "crimes" were all in self-defense. Is that true? Who would fuck with this guy?
― Alex in SF, Sunday, 26 October 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)
the shack out in the wilderness up on the hill is the most awesome thing ever.

that whole video with the shack quest and the stare is something fundamentally magnificent

Answer here:
VBS.tv C/D & S/D
― Alex in SF, Sunday, 26 October 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)
the best thing about the shack is that it completely defies any sort of logic. Other than maybe Gaahl's grandparents were as in to the fascist cliff notes Nietzsche ideology as him and decided to get all hyperborean up there.
― what U cry 4 (jim), Sunday, 26 October 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)
^^^ would not shock me.

COMMENT | Im fuckin done!!!posted by : jbenecasa10/29/2008 9:06:11 AM He's just givin black metal a bad name! He goes in that film about metal and talks tough shit about satan and how church burnings are legit. the only reason he hates christianity is because they dont sanction gay marriage. I cant fuckin believe this scrawny pale viking bastard is goin to sit there n try to look tough while talkin about his homosexuality!!!
this is why the mainstream media has such a gripe over black metal.it pushes the evil envelope but then you got guys like Gaahl who say "Oh by the way, Im gay. Yes it is true I, the singer of one of the most 'evil' metal bands ever, am a flaming homosexual douche bag."
FUCK GAYGOROTH AND FUCK GAAHL!!!

been listening a lot to Antichrist and Under The Sign of Hell lately. The is easily in my top-5 BM records.
Really glad to hear that Gaahl is out of the closet.

The ^latter^ is easily..
― ian, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 00:50 (sixteen years ago)
bought pentagram today.
― ian, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)
I actually think Ad Gloriam is probably their best which is probably sacrilege. It's the one I play the most anyway.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 20:32 (sixteen years ago)
I've been learning my way around the 2nd-wave stuff over the past several months... Picked up Pentagram yesterday. This is fucking great! This is, like, exactly how I want this stuff to sound. I was dipping into early Emperor recently, and while I admire it, the keyboard work is hard for me to fully immerse myself in. I like it really just blazing fast and raw as hell. And this record really hits the spot.
― Clarke B., Monday, 27 August 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)
Yr going to like Under The Sign Of Hell even more then...
― Siegbran, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 12:26 (thirteen years ago)
Man Siegbran, you weren't kidding... Under the Sign of Hell is incredible. Only a few spins in and it's already one of my favorite black metal records (granted, in my extremely limited introductory experience with the genre; a pal swears I'm going to flip for Drawing Down the Moon by Beherit; now I just need to find it).
― Clarke B., Monday, 10 September 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)
Hmmm... I checked these guys out a long time ago and didn't like the voice. Ah wait scrap that, I'm getting mixed up with Gorguts. Cool, I will check out this band then.
― This Is... The Police (dog latin), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 11:37 (thirteen years ago)
Sure, that makes sense. I always assumed he was saying something similar, but more prosaic and down-to-earth: 'Look closely how strong and independent were my grandparents. Not like you, you are sheeplike, and so is your whiny friend with his wet socks and trouble breathing and so forth. You are regrettably a pair of little girls. My grandparents build a little shack on a mountain in the snow, for them was normal day. No film for them, no glory. And yet you, with your little documentary, you embarass yourselves in from of their memory, for you have not even the inner strength to come to observe their handiwork. This is, in my eyes, worthy only of contempt. And as you are in my lair, I will mock you relentlessly for it, you milk-fed, soft, protected, complain-ful worms'.
― moley, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 06:44 (thirteen years ago)
holy fuck is "Under the Sign of Hell" great. folksy, hooky melodies, loud, pounding drums, necro guitars, terrifying vocals........
does the 2011 re-recording suck?
