I have Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam on my computer. I haven't listened to it much, but "White Seed" rocks; John D recommended me that particular song, and it certainly hasn't disappointed. I'll go back to the record; I need to work out my year's top 20 (this is the first time I can ever do this with integrity) and who knows, it might make the cut!

As I type, "Carving A Giant" becomes massively awesome. This will definitely get a proper going-over.

I just did! Wow! I did NOT see that coming. Dude has the most amazingly deep, compelling voice, and even that's got nothing on his stare. He seems to have found an amazing concordance with himself, even as he fights whatever it is he's fighting (my guesses: Judeo-Christian-Islamic religion, lack of integrity or self-discipline). Leading the documentary-makers to that isolated wooden hut = mega awesome. If I was one of them I'd feel fucking privileged, not to mention overwhelmed.

He's a classic narcissist - but still a classic.

Gaahl is a great great great vocalist (do NOT pass over the Trelldom records which more than match whatever he has done with Gorgoroth). However, nothing beats "Under The Sign Of Hell" - with that incredible "up-close" sound, like listening to your own body being smashed to pieces with baseball bats. Unfortunately it's the last consistently great Gorgoroth album - there've been moments of greatness on every album but somehow they cannot let the "we'll fuck you up...BADLY" feeling last for a full album anymore.

also, sounds like this could be the first non-cringeworthy black metal vocals I'm going to encounter (been trying out some for the last couple of days, guided by some threads here and some lists on amazon & rateyourmusic and I found some stuff I almost love, except the vocals, that are, to me, for now, mostly, well, unfortunate & ridiculously cartoony yelps)

He goes in that film about metal and talks tough shit about satan and how church burnings are legit. the only reason he hates christianity is because they dont sanction gay marriage. I cant fuckin believe this scrawny pale viking bastard is goin to sit there n try to look tough while talkin about his homosexuality!!!

I actually think Ad Gloriam is probably their best which is probably sacrilege. It's the one I play the most anyway.

I've been learning my way around the 2nd-wave stuff over the past several months... Picked up Pentagram yesterday. This is fucking great! This is, like, exactly how I want this stuff to sound. I was dipping into early Emperor recently, and while I admire it, the keyboard work is hard for me to fully immerse myself in. I like it really just blazing fast and raw as hell. And this record really hits the spot.

Man Siegbran, you weren't kidding... Under the Sign of Hell is incredible. Only a few spins in and it's already one of my favorite black metal records (granted, in my extremely limited introductory experience with the genre; a pal swears I'm going to flip for Drawing Down the Moon by Beherit; now I just need to find it).

Hmmm... I checked these guys out a long time ago and didn't like the voice. Ah wait scrap that, I'm getting mixed up with Gorguts. Cool, I will check out this band then.

Sure, that makes sense. I always assumed he was saying something similar, but more prosaic and down-to-earth: 'Look closely how strong and independent were my grandparents. Not like you, you are sheeplike, and so is your whiny friend with his wet socks and trouble breathing and so forth. You are regrettably a pair of little girls. My grandparents build a little shack on a mountain in the snow, for them was normal day. No film for them, no glory. And yet you, with your little documentary, you embarass yourselves in from of their memory, for you have not even the inner strength to come to observe their handiwork.
